Sponsorships and Logistics

The registration fee is highly subsidized by Humidtropics. There is a limited pool of resources available for those who need some financial assistance towards participation in this conference. Priority will be given to participants whose abstracts/posters are selected for presentation, to students, and to participants coming from developing countries. Partial sponsorship arrangements also apply. Please let us know if funding would be required for your attendance. Successful applicants will be contacted in July. We can also provide a letter of support for you to apply to additional/alternate sources of funding that you identify to enable your travel to Ibadan and participation in the Conference.

Rooms are being held from October 6 to 10 inclusively at I-House and in apartment blocks on IITA campus in Ibadan – arrangements for accommodation in Lagos will be made for those arriving late on October 6. IITA will provide invitation letters to participants needing a visa to enter Nigeria. Plane tickets and visa costs are not included in the registration fee.

Keynote Speaker 1

Dr. Julio Berdegué

Dr. Berdegué is Principal Researcher for the Latin American Centre for Rural Development (Rimisp) and coordinator of their “Rural Territorial

Dynamics” programme. He has recently taken part in projects focused on issues such as access for small rural producers to dynamic markets, structural tendencies in food markets and the economics of rural organizations. He formed part of the team that prepared the World Development Report 2008 for the World Bank on “Agriculture for

Development,” and was also part of

the team carrying out an independent external evaluation of the FAO.

He has worked as a consultant for international bodies such as the World Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Inter-American Development Bank, FAO; research and higher education establishments in the US and Europe; and for Latin American governments and small farmer economic organizations.

Dr. Berdegué has a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Wageningen University and Research Centre, Netherlands, a Master of Sciences in Agronomy, University of California at Davis, and Agricultural Engineer, University of Arizona, USA. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Agricultural Economics Journal.

Keynote Speaker 2

Prof. Andy Hall

Prof. Hall is a researcher, evaluator and advisor on the application of systems ideas in the field of agricultural science technology and innovation policy and practice. Originally trained as a plant pathologist, he holds a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Policy Studies from the University of Sussex, UK.

He has held positions at Kawanda agricultural research station in Uganda, the Natural Resources Institute in the UK, ICRISAT in India, the United Nations University (UNU-MERIT) in the Netherlands, DFID’s

Research in Use Program and the Open University in UK. He now combines running a small consultancy company, LINK, with a position at CSIRO in Australia.

Prof. Hall is most well know for his work on agricultural innovation systems, a topic he has researched and written about extensively over the last 20 years. His core interest continues to focus on finding ways to more effectively harness agricultural research for innovation and development.

He recently led a review on the CGIAR Challenge program on Water and Food and has undertaken similar evaluations of major Australian AR4D investments in West and East Africa and in Papua New Guinea.

Keynote Speaker 3

Dr. James Sumberg

Dr. Sumberg is an agriculturalist by training and has over 25 years experience working on small-scale farming systems and agricultural research policy in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. A key research interest has been the dynamics of change within agricultural systems.

He has published on the farming systems research movement; farmer-participatory research; the potential role of concepts from industrial 'new product development' in targeting research; and the value of systems of innovation theory in understanding the challenges to agricultural research in sub-Saharan Africa. More recently he has worked on the agricultural development potential of "home-grown school feeding", the changing global food system and the growth of interest in 'local' food within the UK.

Dr. Sumberg joined IDS as a Research Fellow in October 2009. Previously he served as Programme Director at The New Economics Foundation and Senior Lecturer in Natural Resource Management in the School of Development Studies, University of East Anglia. He has also held research positions at WADRA - the Africa Rice Centre, the International Livestock Centre for Africa, CARE International and the Gambian Livestock Department.

He has a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Plant Breeding and Animal Nutrition from Cornell University, USA, and a B.S. in Plant and Soil Science from University of Massachusetts, USA.

Keynote Speaker 4

Dr. Jackie Ashby

Dr. Ashby is a development sociologist, currently Senior Advisor on Gender and Research at the CGIAR Consortium, Montpellier, France where she coordinates the CGIAR Gender and Agriculture Network and advises on gender mainstreaming in research for the CGIAR’s fifteen new global research

programs.

She currently serves as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability and Board Chair of the Center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education (CATIE) and previously as Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Center for Mountain Development (ICIMOD) from 2007-11.

She is recognised internationally for path-breaking work that established participatory action research as a scientific methodology relevant to agricultural fields as diverse as soil science, plant breeding, and pest management, she is the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters, and training manuals.

Dr. Ashby has a Ph.D. in Development Sociology from Cornell University, USA, a Diploma from the University of Cambridge, and a B.A. Honors from the University of York, England.
