Systemic effects of corticcJsteJUds in chiIdrm with a6ma

Low-dose inhaled corticosteroids have a systemic effect in children with asthma. This is the conclusion of UK researchers. who have shown that nocturnal cortisol production in children with asthma is suppressed. However. daily lung function tests showed significant improvement of moming peak flow rates with corticosteroid treatment.

In this prospective trial. 12 children (mean age 10 years) with asthma received either beclomethasone or budesonide 200Jlg bid for 2 weeks.

Nocturnal serum cortisol production was significantly reduced by 27 and 35% after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment. respectively. and urinary free cortisol showed a similar reduction. Corticotrophin and growth hormone values were not significantly changed. There were no significant differences between the 2 drugs in this trial. NicoWzik WH. M.n:baat n.. Place MA. w .... JO. eI aI.
