“The Eye of The Skin” by Juhani Pallasmaa stated about the how human being and senses influence

the art of the buildings from past until now. From Merleau-Ponty’s own words, stated that our own

body is in the world as the heart to keep and breathe the life constantly alive, therefore it forms a

system. I think that it is true that from different race and culture background bring different identity

and characteristic of the city. And the system is created by different kind of us to help and organize

our daily life.

Architecture is an extension of nature into man-made realm, providing the ground of perception and

the horizon of experiencing the world. I partly agree the perception of experiencing the world,

however we are somehow destroying and interrupting the nature while we build up our own human

world. It also influence the food chain of biology cycle. By the way , it is unavoidable because we are

human being. On the other hand, multi-sensory fulfil the condition of architecture, there are at least

12 senses we used to experience the world including architecture. From the view of Rene Spitz, he

stated that all perception begins in the oral cavity, it is a brigde link from inner to outer perception, I

disagree with that because I think that every experience started with vision, once we see as one

sense, it connected to other senses such as touch, feel etc then continue with oral cavity. I totally

agree with Berkeley’s view which he claimed that vision needs the help of touch, so we can feel the

solidity, resistance and protrusion of the objects including architecture. We have to feel the texture of

every materiality with touch sense in order to senses the weight and three dimensional shapes so

that increase our variety of perception.

However, from another perception of view, architecture is not just an experience as a collection of

isolated visual picture, but in its fully embodied material and spiritual presence. To the upper level,

we actually feel the architecture instead of just visual it. It connect from outer body expression to

inner heart and brain of sense.

To sum up, we human being always use our vision sense get our perception to the surrounding.

Some architecture maybe fancy in the form, but it is emptiness inside. On the other hand, the

building seem normal but it actually create a memory or meaning behind it and we should senses it

by our understanding of the building.
