    wretched refuse of your teeming

    shore. end these, the homeless.

    Tempest!tossed to me. " lift my lamp

    beside the golden door.# 

    These are some of the people in the

    most need. They cannot breathe free.

    The $nited tates of %merica is made

    for new starts, for new opportunities,

    and a new life. &efusing to accept

    refugees will take these rights away

    from people in need of our assistance.

    What Happened in Syria?

    the uprising in Tunisia. The

    democratic movement spread across

    the 1iddle 2ast. yria (oined the

    -ivil 'ar.

    The Start

    yria is and has been, since /000, a

    republic under the presidential rule of 

    3ashar al!%ssad. 4nce the protests

    began in /0**, 3ashar al!%ssad

    answered them with violence. The

    military began opening fire on

    protestors. %rmed opposition groups

    began to fight back against the

    government. The $nited 5ations and

    %rab League failed to institute a

    cease!fire. 3y /0*/ there was a civil

    war.

    gave weapons to the rebels to fight

    against the government. 'hile "ran

    and a Lebanese militant group was

    funding the government. The

    government and the rebels continue

    to fight to this day.

    The Process

    The process of resettling refugees is

    very long and vigorous. This process

    can take anywhere from +!*/ months.

    tates. They then enter the first

    stage.

    Stage 1

    The refugees are scheduled for a pre!

    screening interview. 6uring this

    interview, caseworkers take their

    biometric information. Taking their

    hair!color, eye color, height, weight,

    race, etc. This information is then

    entered into the system. Then their

    background is checked, they look at

    education, family, military history,

    languages, and crimes committed.

    The caseworkers then make their

    persecution claim. This claim will be

    given to a $. -iti?en and

    "mmigration ervice officer. Then the

    first security checks begin.

    Stage 2

    refugees. These officers determine if

    necessary.

    This class teaches them the basic

    resettlement agencies assist the

    days, the refugees are given housing,

    clothing, food, and etc. They also

    suggest programs to allow refugees to

    become self!sufficient. These

    programs include basic 2nglish and

    resettled they are authori?ed to work.

    to apply for permanent residency.
