Six sera (plasma converted by thrombinisation) were issued with requests to report on antibody reactivity indicating the presence of Treponema pallidum (TP). Specimens 4193 and 4194 were pool of two donations. Specimens 4189 and 4190 were single donations of syphilis positive material and specimen 4191 and 4192 were single donations of negative specimens.

Overall performance was very good with correct reports for scored specimens of 99.7% for reagin, 97.5% for TP Agglutination, 97% for FTA, 99.3% for Immunoassay IgG/total, 96.3% for Immunoblot and 96.2% for Immunoassay IgM.

Specimens 4190, 4193 and 4194 Reagin, not scored Experience has shown that treponemal antibody positive specimens with reagin titres of less

than 1:4 may be reported as negative by a significant number of participants, due to variation in test sensitivity, local reporting practice, and to the normal statistical variation that is likely to occur. Only those specimens having reagin titres of 1:4 or more during pre-distribution

testing will be included in scoring (Guidance from the National Quality Assurance Advisory Panel).
