DRAWING & PAINTING 1

COURSE DESCRIPTION Welcome to Drawing & Painting 1! This course is recommended for students who enjoy two-dimensional work. Emphasis is placed on developing basic drawing and painting skills and techniques. A variety of media will be used in class including graphite drawing pencils, pastels, colored pencils and acrylic paint. The fundamentals of composition as found in the elements and principles of design will be used when drawing and painting from life and imagination, using realistic and abstract themes.

COURSE FORMAT This course blends instructor demonstrations, art history discussions and group critiques with hands-on art making. Students are expected to attend class daily and actively participate in all aspects of the course including cleanup. Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to work the entire block. School policies outlined in the student handbook regarding behavior and technology will be honored in the classroom.

MATERIALS NEEDED • 9” x 12” (minimum size) sketchbook may be spiral or sewn. (I suggest a 11” x 14” hardcover) • #2 pencils (not mechanical) • Kneaded erasers ** Stretched canvas ** Shallow tupperware container with lid (approximately 5”x 8”)

** items can be bought later in the marking period.

COURSE CONTENT In this course, we will cover major topics/units. These will include, but are not limited to:

Unit 1 – Line (Observation / Perspective) Unit 2 – Composition / Texture Unit 3 – Value Unit 4 – Color Theory / Acrylic Painting

EVALUATION AND GRADING All projects will first be evaluated by the student and then by the instructor. I will take into consideration your evaluation and feedback when calculating each project grade. Students will be evaluated in two major areas:

1. Responsibility & Participation (20%): Active participation includes prompt daily attendance, being prepared for class with the proper materials/assignments and remaining current on classroom and independent work. Students demonstrate responsibility and participation by arriving on time, contributing to class discussions, working diligently the entire period and cleaning up at the end of class.

2. Projects/Classwork/Sketchbook (80%): Successful completion of all required assignments, exercises and projects as outlined in class and on our class website. All assignments and projects will be assigned a point value based on project objectives, design, production and work ethic. Additionally, all major projects will require a student self-assessment. Sketchbooks will be collected multiple times throughout the MP for a project grade. MP1 - Fall 2015 Drawing & Painting 1 Brown - 1
