This mounted gelatine silver photographic print is one o Bruno Beninis earli-est nude male portraits. It shows Antonio Rodrigues a dancer who originallycame to Australia with the Katherine Dunham dance company, an early NewYork-based A rican-American modern dance troop. It is one o many photo-

graphic portraits rom an archive dominated by ashion photography in print, negative, transparency and proo print or contact ormats. Taken during the1960s, the photograph eatures a textured, wall sur ace with peeling paint as akey background element. Brunos widow Hazel Benini recalls that Bruno alwaysloved a peely. I have a lot o respect or Bruno not just as a person. He had a antastic personality, extremely generous, kind and so t. He was also a very good photographer who never really got the accolades he deserved. Athol Shmith was an absolutely antastic character too, the Max Dupain o Melbourne, a chain smoker. For him, everything was always gracious,a bit like Bruno. They were a certain style o people, which maybe youdont see so much these days. The rst thing you know about them isthat theyre gentlemen. Bruno with a huge amount o style, probablyAthol a little less, but at the same time, with a huge personality. Brunos

personality was so ter and quieter. (Phi Qui k, photog aphe , inte viewwith autho and Jean-F ancois lanza one, Ap i , 2010. Wo ked in Be-ninis studio, 19691970s)

Pauline Kiernan was a very success ul Australian model.Originally rom Armidale in rural northern New South Wales, she worked as a

nurse be ore being encouraged by Sydney photographer John Hearder to pursue amodelling career. A ter attending June Dally-Watkins school, Kiernan travelled toLondon in October 1956 to model Australian clothes. She then spent the next twoyears in Paris, during which time she modelled or Chanel. However, it was in NewYork with the Ford Modeling Agency that Kiernan achieved her greatest success, becoming one o Fords most sought a ter models. Eileen Ford said o Kiernan, In aworld where beauty is just a commonplace, this Australian stands out as having thequality and elegance that women all over the world ever seekand cant buy. This photograph was taken by Bruno Benini in 1957 in the grounds o the Univer-sity o Melbourne. Model Patricia Tuckwell, known at this time as Bambi Shmith, wears a Hall Ludlow designed black and white Magpie tweed tunic with blackbows adorning the sides. Described as Australias rst true couturier, Ludlow

was known or his ne stitching, high technical skill and unique designs, despitehaving no ormal training. Prior to her success ul career as a model, Patricia Tuck-well was a violinist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Here she was given themoniker Bambi and reportedly attracted concert-goers wanting to see her great beauty. On 7 July 1948 Tuckwell married ashion photographer Athol Shmith and in 1951 ounded the Mannequins Association o Victoria along with other promi-nent models o the time. A ter the end o her marriage to Shmith in 1957, Tuckwell moved to England and in 1967 amidst scandal, married George Lascelles, 7th Earl o Harewood, becoming Countess o Harewood. Italian model Carla Baldaracchi wears a bold Post-WWII modernist summer rockby Ninette o Melbourne. The photograph presents an ambitious scenario, captur-ing both the ashion, and the orchestra pit and the elaborate operatic stage set o the Baths o Caracalla, ancient Roman ruins o the lavish thermal baths built orEmperor Caracalla between AD 212 and 217 which were used or outdoor oper-atic per ormances during Spring and Summer. Here Bruno Benini places Australian

ashion centre stage! Its a remarkable shot as it not only evokes the globetrotting orvacation style that became popular in ashion photography during the 1950s, but

also captures the photographers Italian heritage and his interest in history and opera.Furthermore, it hints at the cinematic infuence o ashionable lms like Funny Face(1957) and Roman Holiday (1953). Interestingly, Beninis maternal grand ather wasan Etruscan archaeologist. Perhaps he le t a binding youth ul impression on Beninias a boy, as many o the negatives in the Benini photography archive show Australian

ashion shot against ancient settings. This particular shot was taken during Beninisround the world trip in 1958 when he travelled to New York and London, visiting

amily in Italy and shooting photographs o Australian ashion in and around Romeon both Italian and Australian models. Anne-Marie Van de Ven, Curator. Photogra-

A theme that emerges rom the archive Bruno Benini is his use o artworks as back-drops. In this photograph, used by Henry Haskin on his showroom display card,we see Catherine Patchell modelling Haskins Gown o the Year o 1956 in the

National Gallery o Victoria. Italian artist Giambattista Tiepolos The banquet o Cleopatra (174344) serves as an ideal backdrop here, as it is large in scale and was hung close to the foor at this time. The scene depicted is rom Roman historianPlinys Natural History, where Cleopatra takes one o her priceless pearls, dissolvesit in a glass o vinegar and then drinks it, thus proving to Mark Antony that shecould hold the most extravagant and expensive o banquets. The paintings sumptu-ous subject and atmosphere echo the rich embroidered texture and ornate beadwork(approx. 10,000 beads were used!) o Haskins gown, now held in the collection o the Jewish Museum o Australia.
