Ties between Sweden and India continue to grow stronger. We see intensified relations in a range of areas of mutual benefit and an increasing exchange of high-level visits in both directions. The Make in India Week in Mumbai in 2016 saw the creation of a permanent platform for business leaders, the India Sweden Business Leaders’ Round Table.

Swedish companies have been Making in India for many decades and today create 185 000 jobs in direct employment and around 1.3 million indirectly. We see companies contributing to India’s development in a number of areas, focusing i.e. on energy/

Diplomatic relations between Sweden and India were established in 1948, the year after India became independent. However, business relations between the two nations date back further than that. The Swedish-Indian history can be viewed in three separate waves of development. The first wave of Swedish companies entered India in the beginning of the 20th Century, with pioneering companies like Ericsson, SKF, Swedish Match and ASEA (later to become ABB).

The second wave came after independence. In 1957, the Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited his Swedish counterpart, Tage Erlander, and the two political leaders agreed that Sweden and India had a lot in common and would profit from collaboration. A large area of land was allocated

to Swedish companies in the city of Pune, which was a strategically good location considering the proximity to India’s commercial centre in Mumbai. In the 1960-70s Pune became an important industrial hub, where Swedish companies like Alfa Laval, Tetra Pak, Sandvik and Atlas Copco were established.

The third wave of Swedish companies entered India during the 1980s and 1990s with among others Volvo Trucks & Buses and Perstorp. Companies with large purchasing organizations, such as IKEA and H&M, also started doing business in India. In the 2000s Volvo Cars and Scania established subsidiaries and were accompanied by an influx of small and medium sized companies, such as Systemair and Roxtec, to name a few.

Trade between the two countries has grown over the last decade and a steadily rising number of Swedish companies have established themselves in India. At present, we can see an embryo of a potential fourth wave of Swedish-Indian business development. Swedish companies are now not only sourcing from India, but also progressively establishing their global hubs here with R&D, sales and manufacturing etc. Moreover, there is an influx of fast-moving consumer companies finding their space in a developing Indian retail market.

Whilst Swedish companies have a 100 year long history in India, Indian companies have been

establishing and investing in Sweden more recently, since the start of this millennium. The first foray was led by large IT companies with the top tier companies such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys and L&T Infotech. A second and more decisive wave of IT companies commenced a decade later led by Mahindra-Satyam, and the acquisition by HCL Technologies of Volvo IT and its 900 employees. Indian investments in Sweden in other areas are evident in industrial sectors such as Bioeconomy with Aditya Birla Group’s acquisition of Domsjö Fabriker in viscose fibre, and Bharat Forge in Kilsta in automotive.

Indian companies are in search of innovation, discovery and applications research and as such there have been investments and collaborations in Pharma and Materials Technologies. Cadila Pharma, Kemwell and ITC Group are some of the companies in these fields. An estimated 50 Indian companies in Sweden are employing a total of over 2000 people, and the number of employees engaged in Swedish businesses by Indian owned companies is 2-3 times higher. With the increasing global ambitions of Indian companies we can expect further investment and activity, as Sweden offers complimentary opportunities to Indian company ambitions.

Scania is a world leading manufacturer of premium commercial vehicles, heavy trucks, buses and coaches as well as industrial and marine engines. Scania has been active in the Indian mining and construction segments since 2007. It has two manufacturing facilities in Narsapura, India, set up with an investment of Rs. 300 crore and a current production capacity of 2,500 trucks and 1000 buses. Sweden is a strong player in cultural and creative industries. Today, Sweden is one of the biggest streamers and exporters of music in the world, and has firmly established itself as one of the world’s epicenters for developing and producing innovative, original, mass-market computer games. Sweden is also successful in fashion and design – with an increased focus on sustainability and circular economy – as well as literature, art and film.

These industries play an increasingly important role in the growth of the Swedish economy and are driving forces for innovation in other sectors of society and industry as well. Creative industries are encouraged to grow in an open society, where people have the space to experiment and express themselves freely. Swedish citizens are encouraged to take the chance to start a new business, which is

one of the key factors to the development of many successful Swedish companies.

The reasons behind the boom in Swedish cultural and creative industries are hard to pinpoint. Perhaps people have become more courageous in their expression, perhaps it is the effects of being a melting pot for different cultures or are people increasingly looking abroad for inspiration? Whatever the reason, Sweden is fast in adopting new trends and things have changed from the days of Bergman, Roxette and ABBA. Due to intense exchange between India and Sweden, India is increasingly becoming a source of influence and inspiration for Swedish artists and vice versa. This exchange of ideas is strengthening both sides in their quest for excellence.

A strong culture of innovation has propelled Sweden to the forefront of technological development. With a high number of patents per capita, Sweden is in the world’s top 20, and Swedish creative thinking has resulted in some life-changing innovations spread around the world. The cardiac pacemaker has been implanted in more than 3.5 million people. The three-point auto seat belt is claimed to save a life every six minutes, and has been doing so for more than 50 years.

Both are Swedish inventions and part of a long list of innovations born in this country. Today, Sweden ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the world. Heavy investments in research, encouragement of critical thinking and entrepreneurship from an early age and openness to international influences are some of the key

factors behind this development. Swedish society is traditionally non-hierarchical and has a strong belief in the individual. Through flat organisations and collective decision-making, everyone is given the opportunity to speak and come up with ideas. This increases the probability of new inventions.

Education is also closely linked to innovation capacity. In Sweden, education is free and universities have a close collaboration with both the public and private sectors, setting the foundation for global Swedish companies.

Innovation is at the core of several of our activities in India and can be found both within our larger companies as well as forming the core of new small companies entering the Indian market. It is also a cross-cutting feature of our work as Team Sweden.

Sweden has a long history of international commitment in pursuing global cooperation in sustainable development. This has led to Sweden being in the forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system solutions. This includes renewable energy, green buildings, waste management, air and water treatment, sustainable fuels and battery-driven vehicles.

As the first country in the world to pass an environmental protection act, Sweden also hosted the first UN conference on the global environment in 1972. Since then, Sweden has managed to grow its economy substantially while reducing carbon emissions and limiting pollution. The Swedish green model means integrating business and sustainability. Sweden has emphasized that green growth can drive transition through technical innovation.

Sweden has invested heavily in the search for alternative energy sources. More than half of Sweden’s national energy supply comes from renewable sources and Sweden aims at further reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Waste management, acid rain prevention, sustainable urban planning and recycling are other environmental areas in which Sweden has made progressive headway and challenged the status quo.

We bring sustainability into our work also here in India, with areas such as climate, renewable energy and urban transport very much in our focus. Increasingly we will also see resource management at both the society level with waste-to-energy solutions and the individual’s responsibility for the next generation’s living conditions.

During the State visit by the Indian President Mukherjee to Sweden in June 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) within the field of sustainable urban development was signed. EnergyThe India-Sweden Innovations’ Accelerator (ISIA) program is part of the intergovernmental cooperation between India and Sweden in the area of new and renewable energy technologies.

The objective of the program is to develop and provide platforms for joint innovation, research, development and deployment, which answer to shared needs and are of mutual benefit.

ISIA is based on cooperation between Business Sweden and the Swedish Energy Agency with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) as the main Indian partner. The program focuses on preparing and implementing customised market entry plans for the participating Swedish SMEs from various segments of clean energy and energy efficiency.

The program runs in two year cycles, with 5-6 companies joining the platform on a bi-annual basis. Till date, the program has resulted in successful introduction of over 30 SMEs including Cleanmotion, FOV Biogas, Regin AB, Metrum AB, World Thermal Services and PPAM Solkraft.

Under the platform the following activities, amongst others, are conducted:

Healthcare Sweden and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2009 to facilitate healthcare focused collaboration. Gender equality is one of the cornerstones of Swedish society. The aim of Sweden’s gender equality policies is to ensure that everyone enjoys the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all areas of life. These values are promoted in our work in India as well.

Eight out of ten Swedish companies in India work actively with gender related questions, but so far only 20% of the employees are women. We still have a long journey ahead. The approach is based on the knowledge that business leaders can improve the equality in their companies, if they walk the talk.

Swedish companies work with strategic recruitment, active mentorship and leadership development to increase the number of women in

their workforce, especially in leadership positions. Policies to give equal opportunities and rights as well as ensuring equality of choice, such as replacing the gender-specific maternity leave with parental leave, are being implemented.

Gender justice refers to a world where everyone is treated equally, and is able to share equitably in the distribution of power, knowledge and resources. We want to see all people free from cultural and interpersonal systems of privilege and oppression, and from violence and repression based on gender.

Swedish companies in India build skills throughout value chains. Seven out of ten companies equip people within the area of their business operations, at suppliers or customers, or in community development programs. This has been part of our commitment to India for a long time.

We believe a key contribution we can make is to enable women to enter the organised job sector. Research shows that less than a quarter of the

total workforce in the formal economy is made up by women. If women participated on similar terms as men, India would increase its GDP with 60% (2.9 trillion USD) 2025.

India is one of the largest producer of milk in the world. However most of its milk is produced by small farmer families in remote villages. While men in these families have been concentrating on agriculture the dairy farming has been mainly focused upon by female member of the family. One of the toughest task in dairy farming has been hand milking, this also had a lot of pain and frustration for female farmers in the society.

DeLaval has worked extensively with female farmers to support and improve on this social fabric and have introduced mechanisation for milking thus providing them relief and comfort from the pain of hand milking. DeLaval, initiated awareness and

education process through demonstration of these units from village to village and by communicating its advantage for female farmers and milk productivity. After seeing these demonstration the farmers used to get convinced about its benefit for the family and have adopted mechanisation much faster than earlier. These rural campaigns have provided female farmers the comfort and better social standing compared to earlier situation with hand milking.

With thrust of producing clean & untouched milk to improve milk quality and to address increasing demand for commercial dairy farming, DeLaval in India works closely with farmers to provide education and training on practices and protocols for modern ways of dairy farming. DeLaval conducts courses at different locations to educate farmers on improving productivity and milk quality while addressing cow comfort and cow hygiene.

ISBLRT is a high-level platform for business leaders from Sweden and India. The platform was welcomed by the Prime Ministers in the Joint Statement from their meeting in Mumbai in February 2015. The aim is to identify joint challenges in the fields of research, innovation, investments, financing, trade, business, industrialisation and regulatory issues which need to be addressed and to forge a strong and durable relationship between the two countries.
