The Fine Art team is pleased to introduce the 2012 degree show which isthe culmination of much hard work, planning and anticipation by thegraduating students. This is their chance to showcase their work at apivotal moment between university and the professional world.Throughout the students’ time at Swansea, their studios have beenanimated places with lively discussion about the relationship betweenconcepts and the appropriate means of expressing these visually. Nomedium or method is excluded – we encourage the students to considerwhich material is most pertinent for their ideas, from fabrication topainting and drawing, to video, performance, and installation.

There is no hierarchy of medium and a flexibility of approach isparamount. The range of work shown here reflects this philosophy, with amyriad of accents and themes within the context of the ever-expandingand shifting language of contemporary arts practice.

The course offers supportand constructive criticismthrough tutorials, but allowsyou to develop your practicalwork as an individual withexcellent resources andworkshops. There aremodules to help develop theprofessional side of your workand gain knowledge ofapproaching galleries aftergraduation.

Illustration is more than just imagery. It isabout the remarkable moment whenmessage and meaning is visuallycommunicated. Often through intrigue, playful enchantment and evencontradiction, illustration seeks to delight, entertain and question the world we live in.

This year’s exhibition promises to ignite thesenses and illustrate just how diverse thiscreative discipline has become. Embracinga broader notion of this unique art form, ourgraduate show will highlight the way inwhich illustration communicates through arange of cultural and sociological means,in an ever-expanding range of media.

Photography in the Arts is concerned with exploration,self-discovery and innovation through the medium ofphotography. Photojournalism enables students toundertake an intensive study of the relationship ofimage and text, the theory and practice of socialdocumentation and practical reportage using themedium of photography.

The Exhibitions

The culmination of three year’s work, students from BAPhotography in the Arts and BA Photojournalism will beexhibiting their work in Swansea and London. Thevarying backgrounds and interests of the studentscombined with the openness and encouragement toexperiment offered by the degree courses, has resultedin diverse and innovative photographic workencompassing documentary, landscape, portrait, fashion, conceptual, constructed and performativeapproaches.

Leaving Swansea with a first class honours degree, I was almostimmediately awarded The Guardian Student Photographer ofthe Year Award. This gave me some work experience at TheGuardian in London; from there I received commissions fromThe Guardian. Based in Manchester, I am now workingfreelance on documentary projects in parallel with advancingwedding photography to target affluent and internationalclients.

The Art & Design Masters portfolio at SMU is,we believe, unique in Masters provision in theUK. Each programme, Fine Art, Photography,Visual Communication and Textiles, carries theaffix ‘contemporary dialogues’, and this is notmerely to denote the usual claims of inter-disciplinary practices, but it carries an ethos ofexperimental practice and multi-modalitythroughout our pedagogical remit. Studentsfrom the four pathways share a largeproportion of lectures and seminars so ideasand practices can cross-fertilise. Workshopsare offered in all disciplines to allow thestudent to supplement their skill base, andthey are encouraged early on to work acrossdisciplines in a thought experiment whereprocess based projects are disseminated inperformative ‘pecha kucha’ presentations.

There is equal emphasis on materiality as wellas potential non-material and performativeactivities. However it is up to each student todetermine their own discourse within theirchosen medium and to what extent theycreate a dialogue with other media. Someexamples: The architect becomesphotographer, the photographer becomesperformer, the performer becomesphotographer, the painter becomessituationist, the ceramicist becomes weaver, the philosopher becomes textile artist andthe painter becomes... well, painter! In truthmost students are extending their practice, the possibilities are myriad; new dialogues, new discourses, new artists, ...oh and we hada dancer become a photographer once!
