Swachh Bharat Swasth Bharat

Soon after becoming the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi launched the clean India campaign, a much-needed initiative for a clean India and healthy India.

Clichéd as the saying may sound but cleanliness is next to godliness. Even after more than 65 years of independence, a large majority of people, both in the urban and rural sector, do not have toilets at home. People defacing in the open is a common sight both in the urban and rural landscape. The effect this has on our health can only be imagined. Flies carry germs, causing disease and death.

Then there is the other issue of garbage being strewn around our homes and in our streets. Mosquitoes and other germs breed on the garbage making the human population susceptible to disease.

In India, there is a basic problem in that people keep their houses spic and span but not their surroundings. For example, you can easily observe people throwing their garbage from their balconies on to the street; a person in an expensive car throwing a banana peel on the road; or people stopping their vehicles on the road to ease themselves.

At another level, open potholes on the road become reservoirs of water, especially during the monsoon, and consequently breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Come monsoons and the spread of malaria and dengue becomes very common. Litter on roads, polluted water bodies and poor sanitation invite creepy crawly pests. Medical research has discovered that rats, mice, cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes serve as hosts for transmitting disease. Lack of hygiene is an open invitation to infectious disease.

So when we say Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat (clean India, healthy India) we are actually referring to the need for participation of all stakeholders from individuals to corporates to the government bodies that can help to keep the surroundings clean.

The launch of the clean India campaign has done its bit in spreading awareness about the need to keep the country clean.

Several corporates have taken the initiative to build common toilets across the cities. Then there are other companies, who as part of their corporate social responsibility are taking initiatives to educate the less privileged section of the society to keep the environment green. They are also assisting in the setting up of self-help groups so that people can keep their surroundings clean.

As said above, initiatives need to be taken at all levels. For example, schools are taking, and they further need to strengthen their efforts to inculcate cleanliness habits in the children, with support from parents. They need to be taught basics like washing hands before eating, throwing waste in the dustbins, avoid littering etc. These are entirely personal habits. However, we are also part of a society and so it is essential to follow certain rules like refraining from spitting on the road etc. Any habit, good or bad, picked up in the early years, stays with us for the rest of our lives and that is why we say catch them young.

Then there are habits like smoking, chewing tobacco and betel leaves, and spitting on roads and sidewalks, which unfortunately are handed down from the older generation to the younger one. There is a dire need to educate and sensitize people about the importance of cleanliness in light of our health and environment.

We can safely say that cleanliness can make the difference between life and death. A healthy environment is necessary to stay healthy. If the environment is dirty it badly affects the health of the people living around.

Wherever we live, it is important for us to keep our homes and surroundings. clean. Let's start with our individual homes and our immediate surroundings. Inculcate clean living habits and experience first hand how it brings about a positive change in your life. So join hands and come together for swachh Bharat, swasth Bharat.
