The concept of sustainable tourism has grown out of the concept of sustainable development (SD), whose most popular definition has arisen from the World Commission on Environment and Development(the Brundtland Commission).

Their 1986 report (Our Common Future) defined SD as: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainable Development is an old concept."Sustainable development is development

that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." [UNEP, 1987]

Sustainable Development Principles

Four basic principles are crucial to the concept of sustainability:1. The idea of holistic planning, cross- sectoral

planning and strategy making2. The importance of preserving essential

ecological processes3. The need to protect both human heritage and

biodiversity4. The requirement that development should be

carried out so that productivity does not deplete resources for the long term and future generations

TOURISM

Tourism is one of the world's fastest growing industries and an important source of foreign exchange and employment for many developing countries and developed countries.

Tourism that focuses on natural environments is a large and growing part of the tourism industry.

Sustainable tourism has to meet social, cultural, ecological and economic requirements.

Sustainable tourism holds a long-term view, for present and future generations, ethically and Socially just and culturally adapted, ecologically viable and economically sensible and productive.

Principles of Sustainable Tourism

The concept of sustainability as a resource development and management philosophy is permeating all levels of policy and practice relating to tourism, from local to global.

Sustainable tourism can fulfil economic, social, and aesthetic needs while maintaining cultural integrity and ecological processes.

It can provide for today’s hosts and guests while protecting and enhancing the same opportunity for the future.

Ecotourism - tourism that respects the environment by focusing on environmental protection or appreciation of the environment in some form.

Geo tourism - tourism that sustains, or even enhances, the geographical character of a place, such as its culture, environment, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.

Volun tourism - is a form of travel where one volunteers on projects which give back to the community.

Responsible tourism - tourism that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit through: minimizing negative economic, environmental and

The sustainable development approach is particularly important when applying socio-cultural impacts.

Because this sector depends mostly on tourist attractions and activities that are related to both the natural environment, historic and cultural heritage of an area.

If tourism is to be sustainable it must move away from its traditional growth-oriented model to one concerned with a sustainable set of goals and principles.

Sustainable tourism must be seen as a goal in tourism development.
