sustainable harvest of wildlife

Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife in Canada
By Justin Roberts, Julie Puckering, and Jordan York
Canada is rich with wildlife.
However
Some of Canada’s wildlife species are harvested.
What do we mean by harvested?
To harvest is to catch or kill (animals) for human consumption or use.
Wildlife has been harvested in Canada since European contact…
… and even earlier by Canadian Aboriginals.
If Canadian wildlife species have been harvested for so
long, how are they still available today?
Healthy wildlife populations will grow naturally
Regardless of the following:
Animals naturally die of old age.
Some animals have natural predators.
Others may be at risk of harsh diseases.
Whatever growth is unaffected by these factors is available to be harvested sustainably.
If we harvest more than the excess that is available, we are
overharvesting.
Overharvesting may result in a species becoming…
…Extirpated
The Greater Prairie Chicken
…Endangered
The Whooping Crane
… or Extinct
The Labrador Duck
Wildlife managers regulate harvest to make sure we do
not overharvest.
So that we can continue to use Canadian wildlife for…
…Food
…Clothing
…And other wildlife products
And so that we can enjoy seeing them in their
natural habitat.
Follow regulations when you harvest Canadian wildlife…
And support companies that harvest sustainably…
… Otherwise our wildlife will not be available in the future.
The End
