Sustainable Chemistry Vs. Sustainable Chemical Management

Green Chemistry, here I re-phrase as Sustainable Chemistry is a widely used term now a days.

The other frequently used terms are alternative chemistry and better chemistry. On the other

hand, Sustainable Chemical Management is also one of the favorite talks in textile and footwear

supply chain. My objectives to write this article is show a relationship between these two

terms.

Sustainable Chemistry

Sustainable chemistry is a scientific concept that seeks to improve the efficiency with which

natural resources are used to meet human needs for chemical products and services. It

encompasses the design, manufacture and use of efficient, effective, safe and more

environmentally benign chemical products and processes.

It is also a process that stimulates innovation across all sectors to design and discover new

chemicals, production processes, and product stewardship practices that will provide increased

performance and increased value while meeting the goals of protecting and enhancing human

health and the environment.

Sustainable Chemical Management

On the other hand, Sustainable Chemical Management is a systematic approach that may

control purchase, store, application and disposal of chemicals in a production site. The most

visible link between Sustainable Chemistry and Sustainable Chemical Management is the

selection of right chemicals/best chemicals for a specific product manufacturing with regards to

price, quality and technical efficiencies. Three major component of Sustainable Chemical

Management are-

Chemical Management Policy- there should be clear strategy on the purchase, store

and disposal of chemicals and this should go beyond a paper. Necessary financial as well

as intellectual capacity should also be allocated to achieve the set objectives.

Performance Monitoring- there should be clear process of monitoring performance,

analyze the improvement and adjustment of policy regularly with regards to time,

changes of production and in parallel with the development of Sustainable Chemistry.

Stakeholder Engagement- should be transparent, share the result with the stakeholder,

value the criticism, learn from the failure, etc.
