Appreciate broad definition of “text”

Consulting multiple sources/perspectives—see as a global education mindset

Challenged by “craft & structure” & “measuring text complexity”

Challenged by shared responsibility for student literacy across curriculum

Strongest need>>concrete models w/creative ways to build CCSS skills while teaching vital SS content that is global in focus

+ Integrating Information from Primary and Secondary Sources/Analyzing Craft & StructureStandard 5 (Social Studies):

Standard 9 (Social Studies):Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary, into a coherent understanding  of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources. (Grades 11‐12)

+ Integrating Information from Primary and Secondary Sources

PROCEDURE FOR ACTIVITY

1)Read UN document, “Impact of Armed Conflict on Children.” Is it persuasive? “Craft and structure questions.

2)Listen to/read selections from oral testimonies, “Beyond the Fire: Teen Experiences in War.”

3)Compare/contrast two treatments: what does each source contribute to our knowledge? Which do you prefer and why? Which teaches you more, and why?

5)Student groups use oral testimonies to find best evidence to support (or contradict) each assertion.  Write quotes (evidence)on post‐its and add to chart paper.

6)Each group summarizes the grouping of evidence from one chart sheet.

+Reading and Writing Biographies

Wangari thinks about the barren land.I can begin to replace some of the lost trees here in my own backyard – one tree at a time.She starts by planting nine seedlings.

Watching the seedlings take root gives Wangari the idea to plant more – to start a farm for baby trees, a nursery.In an open space, she plants row after row of the tiny trees.

Next, Wangari convinces the village women that planting trees is a good thing.She gives each one a seedling.“Our lives will be better when we have trees again. You’ll see. We are planting the seeds of hope.”
