PRESBYTERIANS SHARING…is our opportunity to join with over 900 Presbyterian congregations to share in ministry in Canada and with partners in different places in the world. As part of your offering, let us support Presbyterians Sharing and reach our goal for 2014 of $8,500. Here are a couple of stories of how we are making a difference:

Helping Syrian Refugees Resettle in CanadaThe crisis in Syria has resulted in one of the largest refugee movements in modern times – over two million Syrians have sought refuge outside their borders. The Canadian government announced in 2013 it would resettle 1,300 Syrian refugees from Jordan and Lebanon with the assistance of official sponsorship agreement holders. The Presbyterian Church in Canada – with the assistance of Presbyterian congregations – is able to help sponsor ten people to resettle in Canada. Meanwhile, Action Rèfugiés Montréal (with support from PWS&D, Canadian Ministries and the Anglican Diocese of Montreal) is helping the Syrian community in Quebec to sponsor those in greatest need.

PWS&D responds to refugees

Changing lives through Youth in MissionIn 2013, a Youth in Mission team of nine young people travelled to Malawi where they spent three weeks visiting PCC and PWS&D partners and projects in Mulanje and Blantyre. Participant Katie Hubley from New Glasgow, NS, shares, “This trip was easily the most life-changing event I have ever experienced and I thank God every day for the opportunity to serve Him. I am so thankful for what I’ve learned from our brothers and sisters in Malawi – their warm welcome, their love of worship, their contentment and their willingness to praise God and experience true joy in less than perfect circumstances.” Presbyterians Sharing supports the Youth in Mission program, enabling young people to learn first-hand about The Presbyterian Church in Canada’s mission and ministry around the world.

PWSDevelopmentsThe Journey HomeBetween July and December 2013, nine women were successfully reunited with their families.

It’s a truly joyful day for Madam Poanyuug. She is finally being reunited with her family after spending 19 years living in the Gambaga Outcast Home in northern Ghana. One of the oldest women living in the camp, she fled to Gambaga after being accused of bewitching her own son.

“My son got a swollen eye and mentioned that he saw me in his dream, using a knife to pull out his eye. When he accused me of being the one responsible, the community supported him and I was banished.”

After staying 13 years at Gambaga, Wudama Dagang is also eager to go home.

Describing how she came to live at Gambaga, Wudama says, “My nephew said he saw me shoot him with a gun in a dream. The following morning I was called before the elders of my village and told to go to Gambaga to prove my innocence. I believe the boy was influenced by his mother, who never liked me.”

The Gambaga Outcast Home is a place of refuge for women who have been branded witches by their family and community. The camp is meant to be a temporary stop on their journey towards greater acceptance, and eventually home.

In partnership with Presbyterian World Service & Development, the Gambaga Go Home project is working to prevent future allegations of witchcraft and reintegrate accused women, like Poanyuug and Wudama, back into their communities.

In order to foster acceptance and pave the way for their return, the project sensitizes communities about human rights, mental illness, disabilities and other health issues that are often mistakenly attributed to witchcraft.

SESSION REPORTThe April Session meeting was delayed, because of Easter, until last Monday evening. Roll Clerk, Diane Parker, led the discussion regarding the updating of the Knox Church roll and the Elder Routes. There will be some changes to the routes but if you now have an Elder or you have a new Elder you will be contacted by your Elder with this information. If you do not hear within the next two weeks please contact me.The report from the Board of Managers indicated a deficit so far this year of $15,000. This is a serious shortfall. Please consider how you can help. A fundraising committee is being formed and if you are willing to assist—if even just to suggest possible projects—please talk with Shirley Weitzel or with me.The Knox yearly retreat with the St. Mary’s congregation in June was discussed. Sunday service June 22 will be at Camp Kintail at 10:45 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch. Information re carpooling for those able to attend just the Sunday service will be available closer to the date. The Communications Team is investigating the purchase of equipment to record our Sunday service. The CD’s produced would be available for those unable to attend the service. This is being done in response to many requests from shut-ins.A team from Presbytery will be visiting Knox soon. They will be reviewing life at Knox over the past two years. They will be interviewing Rev. Gedcke, Session and the Board of Managers. There will be a special time when they will hear from members of the congregation. Times will be announced. Margaret LuptonClerk of Session
