Sun Temple-Konark, a Source of Sculptural Beauty

The Sun Temple of Konark is one of the the most prominent temples in India and also the World

Heritage Site. It is also one among the seven wonders of India and also one among the Best Indian

Monument attractions. The Sun Temple of Konark is located in the Orissa State of India. And it is

located 35 Km North of Puri. Konark Temple is an ancient Hindhu temple which is build in the name

of Sun God. It was temple built in 1278 CE by the Ganga King Narasimha Deva. As well it is known as

the black pagoda. Though the 'Black Pagoda' is in ruins, the remaining portal area and other

structures of this temple complex remain as a jewel in the crown of Orissan artistry. The Sun

Temple is the most admired Indian monument attractions of India.

The Sun Temple in Konark is shaped in the form of giant chariot, which is recognized for its

beautiful stone carvings that are seen on its interiors and exteriors. Two lions guard the entrance

indulging in an act of striking elephants. A getaway of steps lead to the main entrance. This huge

temple chariot is drawn by 24 wheels and 7 horses. Each wheel is about 10 feet in diameter, the

majestic intricate carving on these massive wheels of the chariot is just beyond imagination and are

the major attractions of the temple. The entire structure is exaggerated with complicated carvings

sculptures, images, right from its base up to the walls and ceilings. There are images of animals,

foliage, men, warriors on horses and other interesting patterns in different styles. There are three

images of the Sun God, positioned to catch the rays of the sun at dawn, noon and sunset.

The spokes of these wheels serve as sundials, and the shadows formed by these can give the exact

time of the day. Some says that the wheels represent the 24 hours of the day and others says the

12 months in its concept, where as the seven horses dragging the temple makes up the seven days

of the week.

The main idol of the Sun God on which the sunrays use to fell in the morning was removed by some

Portuguese navigators. Local belief that the temple was constructed in entirety, however its

magnetic dome caused ships to crash near the seashore, therefore the dome was removed and

destroyed. The original image of the Sun God was taken to Puri.And now The sun temple Konark is

now belongs to the famous Kalinga school of Indian temples.

The Temple is located in natural surroundings, abounding with casuarina plantations and other types

of trees, which grow on sandy soil. The environment is by and large unspoiled. Gentle rolling

topography around the Sun Temple lends some variation to the landscape. The Konark Dance

Festival and the Sun Festival are annually celebrated in the temple with great enthusiasm and joy.

The best time to visit Konark is on the month of winter. During winter, weather remains idyllic for

tourists from all parts of the world to visit Konark. October to March is the most favorable season

to visit this place. Here by, the Sun Temple is considered as one of the most admired tourist

destinations and Indian monument attractions in Orissa.
