The Global Girls Academy at The Ethel Walker School is a 3-week, intensive summer English language and American culture immersion program. Girls from around the world become acclimated to many aspects of living and learning in the United States in small groups with a 5-to-1 student-teacher ratio.

The program centers on improving English language skills for all levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. Participants will also take group trips to major U.S. cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, as well as key historic destinations throughout the northeast, including Newport, RI, Concord and Salem, MA, and Valley Forge, PA. While on these trips, students will have the opportunity to visit and tour several prestigious universities.

Adventures in College Applications is offered as a session to help students age 16-18 prepare to enter college. Counselors provide close support for students as they search out colleges of interest, write essays, complete applications, and position themselves for acceptance.

Adventures in Real World Applications is a new and interactive way for students age 12-15 to immerse themselves in American history while building leadership, teamwork, and problem solving skills in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in cooperative settings. They also will explore the application process for universities and secondary schools.

One-Day Adventures in Film Making is a condensed version of the Girls Film Academy. This program allows girls of all ages to use their communication skills to write and produce their own video segments – all in time for a Film Festival and awards Ceremony at the end of the day.

The price includes ground transportation to and from JFK and Hartford Bradley International, plus all meals, books, supplies, bed linens, towels, pillows, blankets, day and overnight excursions to cities and colleges. Space is limited so please register early.

Residential Summer Programs

Our day programs are open to everyone. They allow students to explore new areas of

learning and personal development every day, and return home at night. All day

programs– except for Rosie’s Girls – are co-ed.

Each day program is designed to be an immersive experience in which students get

deeply involved in particular areas of interest. Student groups are kept small, so

teacher-to-student ratios are optimally suited for fast learning.

These programs are about the joy of learning, understanding, and improving. And it’s

amazing how far students can advance when they’re in the right environment.

The Summer Riding ExperienceResidential or Day Programs for Ages 8-14

The Summer Riding Experience is one of the most popular summer events. It is an extension of the highly successful riding program we offer students during the school’s academic year.

The program offers a safe, comprehensive, and enjoyable experience for a small number of riders of all ability levels, and assists them in developing self-confidence and good horsemanship skills.

Riders will learn elements of equitation, jumping, dressage and cross country under the supervision of highly experienced and engaged instructors.

Girls Film Academy Residential or Day Program for Girls Ages 12-18

The Girls Film Academy at The Ethel Walker School is the only program of its kind, offering an opportunity for young girls interested in film making to receive hands-on experience in screenwriting, shooting, directing, acting, editing, and completing their own film in teams.

With the help of accomplished film makers from London, England, enthusiasts will be able to experience the realities and joys of turning a film idea into a reality.

The Academy will culminate with a “Purple Carpet” premiere screening and awards ceremony for finished films and each participant will go home with a DVD copy of the final cut.

“ Film making is about making films, not just talking about it. Getting out there and doing it is the only way to learn.”

“Completing a film – and not giving up halfway – gives young people a sense of achievement, pride, and confidence that can positively impact other aspects of their lives.”

Rosie’s GirlsDay Program for Grades 5-9

This 3-week program is named after the fictional cultural icon Rosie the Riveter, who represented women working traditionally male jobs during World War II. It is devoted to opening doors of understanding about what women are capable of when they look at the world without limitations. It is the first time this program has ever been offered in Connecticut.

The exploration of STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) will be the primary area of focus. Group discussions are mixed with traditional camp activities. The end result is a group of young women who share a fresh, new perspective of their potential and a “We Can Do It!” attitude.

Extended care is offered. Inquire for details when enrolling.

The Summer Arts Academy Day Program for Grades 1-8

Participants choose their own schedule of five activities per day from lots of options, including painting, drawing, theatre, pottery, printmaking, digital photography, choral music, creative writing, dance, musical theatre, sculpture and more.

No matter what selections they choose, the emphasis is on building social and artistic problem-solving skills and improving confidence.

NOTE: The musical theatre concentration is an exercise in experimental learning about musical production. The program will put on a fully staged, choreographed and costumed production. Extended care option offered.
