New At the Bookstore

Small enough to fit in a pocket yet serious enough to provide real an-

swers, this primer is a must-have for architecture and history buffs,

tourists, and churchgoers interested in decoding the styles and sym-

bols of religious buildings. Every building contains clues embedded in

its design that identify not only its architectural style but also who de-

signed it, what kind of congregation it was built for, and why.

Father Recommends Dear Friends –

As summer is upon us, it’s time for our annual reading recommenda-tions from the Welcome Center Bookstore.

I want to strongly recommend a wonderful book by one of my favorite authors, David McCullough. His 1972 book on the construction of the Brook-lyn Bridge was reprinted last May. The book, “The Great Bridge” tells the story of the politics, personalities and the engineering behind the construction of this great NYC landmark. There’s a fair bit of engineering terminology which is sometimes difficult, but the entire story unfolds so effortlessly – it’s a great summer book. McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback; His other widely praised books are 1776, Brave Companions and The Johnstown Flood. I particularly enjoyed John Adams, Truman, 1776, and Mornings on Horseback.

The first two are insightful and ‘difficult-to-put-down’ presidential biographies. The last two essentially have New York City as one of the charac-ters; 1776 recounts the American Revolution in that year, which was centered here in the City. Detailed descriptions of life in the City gave me a new appre-ciation for role of the people and the City in the Revolution. The other tells the story of Theodore Roosevelt’s upbringing in the City and so again, the city comes alive in the descriptions of the people and places. When I came here in 2006, I wanted to learn more about the history of NYC and these were tre-mendously helpful.

This year the Public Theater presents one of William Shakespeare’s great comedies, “As You Like It” in Central Park. The play contains that fa-mous soliloquy (Act II, 7):

"All the world's a stage And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages..." The heroine, Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke falls in love

with Orlando the disinherited son of one of the duke's friends. When she is banished from the court by her usurping uncle, Duke Frederick, Rosalind takes on the appearance of a boy calling herself Ganymede. She travels with her cousin Celia and the jester Touchstone to the Forest of Arden, where her fa-ther and his friends live in exile. Themes about life and love, including aging, the natural world, and death are included in the play. New friends are made and families are reunited. By the end of the play Ganymede, once again Rosalind, marries Orlando. Orlando and Rosalind, Oliver and Celia, Silvius and Phebe, and Touchstone and Audrey all are married in the final scene. Oliver becomes a gentler, kinder young man so the Duke changes his ways and turns to religion and so that the exiled Duke, father of Rosalind, can rule once again. A classic story of conversion!

For some light, but profound theological reading, pick up a copy of Anthony de Mello, “Song of the Bird”. It’s a small book in which the late Jesu-it shares 124 stories from a variety of traditions, both ancient and modern, using parables to illustrate profound contemporary realities about our every-day concerns and our common spiritual quest. For a more directed medita-tive book, use his wonderful little book, “The Way to Love: Last Meditations on Love”. There are about 30 brief meditations on the nature of love and a wonderful way to spend some time on the beach contemplating.

May the LORD bless your summer with rest, happiness, and peace! Father Gil

Journey of a Soul: The Autobiography of Pope John XXIII

I read this autobiography of Pope John XXIII when it first came out in the 1960’s. His spirituality and humor is immediately apparent. It takes you for his thoughts as a young seminarian from a small village, through his experiences as a chaplain is World War I and then his success as a diplomat, then Patriarch of Venice and finally beloved Pope John.

American Religious Poems: An Anthology by Harold Bloom

This beautifully bound volume is a special edition from the Library of Ameri-ca. Poems were carefully selected to portray the American sensibility about religion and spirituality. It includes a 47 page introduction by Yale Universi-ty’s distinguished professor, Harold Bloom, who is the books lead editor.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle

I have recommended this book time and time again for people who want to clear their mind from living in the past or future. The author, Eckhart Tolle, writes powerfully from a personal and cathartic experience that convinced him of…the power of Now.

The Way and Along the Way

Along the Way and The Way, two labors of love brought

to life by Martin Sheen and his real life son, Emilio Es-

tevez, are now available in the Bookstore.

"The Way" is a powerful story about the challenges we

face while navigating this ever-changing and complicat-

ed world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, who comes to St.

Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his

son , killed in a storm while walking the Camino de San-

tiago. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark

on the pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the

journey.

In “Along the Way” these two men recount their lives as

father and son. In alternating chapters—and in voices

that are as eloquent as they are different—they tell sto-

ries spanning more than fifty years of family history, and

reflect on their journeys into two different kinds of faith.
