Zillertal Alps Nature Park Dear Nature Park Enthusiast,

Our Nature Park is a high alpine conservation area in the truest sense of the words. It extends from the traditional mountaineering village of Ginzling to the Hochfeiler Peak at 3,500 m. Five different sub-valleys, narrow gorges, glaciated summits, innate and cultivated landscapes as well as an extraordinary biodiversity are its’ defining characteristics.

We invite you to discover the Nature Park together with our guides and find out more about the region. There is something to suit everyone – with hikes to the Berlin Hut, herbal walks and an ascent to Mount Ahorn’s peak with Peter Habeler.

We highly recommend a visit to the Nature Park House, as well as staying with one of our partner companies who work in close collaboration with the Nature Park. Guests of our part-ner companies can participate in all our Nature Park hikes and visit the exhibition at the Nature Park House for free.

The Nature Park is waiting to be discovered by you!

The Nature Park Team, Manager Willi Seifert, Katharina Weiskopf, Karin Bauer

Events Following in the tracks of Stone Age hunters and gatherers in the high alpine region 03. 07.

and 01.08

Archaeological excavations have revealed that hunters and gatherers passed over the Pfitscherjoch as early as 8,000 years ago. During the summer hunting season, alpine ibex & Co. were hunted down with spears, bows and arrows. Hunters lay in wait, protected by overhanging rocks – or on the shores of mountain lakes or other good vantage points. This easily passable mountain passage was

an important link between the Inn and Eisack Valleys. During our field trip and evening lecture by Prof. Walter Leitner, we will hear the latest information at firsthand and the highly interesting results of his research team! Evening lecture: Wednesday, 3rd July, Ginzling Multipurpose Building, free admission Field trip: Thursday, 1st August, 9:00 hrs Schlegeis reservoir (Zamsereck snack bar), free

Nature Park Festival & Nature Park Hike, Saturday 17.08.Nature Park Festival for visitors of all ages in Ginzling. There will also be a communal walk from the Nature Park House in the mountaineering village Ginzling to Floitengrund with nature studies and refreshment stations manned by our Nature Park guides en route, as well as a Nature Park arts and crafts stand at the Nature Park Festival in Ginzling.

Scary story night at the Nature Park library, Friday 18.10.It’s going to be creepy! Alfred Kröll will be telling us stories about Zillertal, after which you can expect a night full of adventure in the Nature Park House with Katharina. For children aged 9 – 12 years, with a night hike, games and breakfast together. Please bring sleepwear, a sleeping bag, torch and a self-painted picture or story. It is possible to attend just the story hour from 17:00 – 18:00 hrs. Please register in advance

You will meet llamas Sam, Sanchez, Amadeus, Leopold and Ferdl at the Krapfenhof and, with a little practise, learn how to handle them. Later on we will go for a leisurely walk where you will be given the opportunity to lead a llama on a leash. We will take a break along the way, when you can watch the llamas feeding. Children’s Programme

Children’s expedition to the „Glocke“ or Forest Pixie day* An invitation to all budding natural scientists and their parents! Sebastian Daxner | Irene Fankhauser | Andrea SporerTwo children’s programmes in the Glocke conservation area! We want to find out more about the Glocke, a natural oasis full of botanical rarities and specialities, and take the children off on an adventure in search of giant trees and tiny plants in the woods and fields. We discover how plants and animals live with us in the mountains, in a playful way and using all our senses. As a forest pixie, we will learn about the forest from the forest and explore the Glocke using all our imagination and creativity. Children and their thirst for knowledge are the focal points of this family hike led by natural history experts.

Slow food with wild salad and farmer’s bread Take pleasure in taking the time to use all your senses Andrea Sporer

Slow food stands for enjoyable, discerning and regional food. In hectic times such as these, slow food is gaining increasing importance. How can we implement this simple and straightforward way of life? We explore nature together – from the Scheulingwald Forest we climb to the Brandberg Chapel and walk to the tiny hamlet of Pignellen. Beautiful spots invite you to linger and savour the surroundings. We round off our walk with a delicious sampling of farmer’s bread and wild salad we have prepared ourselves. 1

After a rest, we then carry on past the Steinbock.Worlds and on to the Zillergründl Reservoir. The alpine ibex is an animal with a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the begin-ning of the 17th century there was a population of several hundred animals in this region. After violent clashes between the official hunters and poachers, the Archbishop of Salzburg ordered that the species should be eradicated in an attempt to prevent further confrontations. Melchermuas - Dairyman’s Pancake at the Bodenalm Hike to one of one of the last original dairy farms in the Alps Maria FankhauserThe Bodenalm, located at 1,700 m above sea level in the Zillergrund, is one of the last dairy farms in the Alps that is not accessible by road. Only a narrow footpath, with sections actually carved into the rock face, leads from Häusling up to the grazing pastures. This tour in the midst of the Na-ture Park provides an insight into the daily lives and extremely hard work these mountain farmers are faced with. After a rather steep ascent of around 1½ hours, our efforts will be rewarded with a serving of Melchermuas and a glass of fresh milk, a traditional alpine meal prepared by the farmers themselves using butter, flour, milk and a pinch of salt.

Magnesite Mine On the trail of mining history Herbert GraslBefore tourists first discovered the Tux Valley, Europe’s highest mining and smelting operations were located here at 1,700 metres above sea level. Until its’ closure in 1976, the magnesite mine was a source of employment for up to 400 workers. Works housing with a primary school, shop, cinema and ski lift made the lives of these working families somewhat easier. To-gether we will walk to the Chapel of St. Barbara with frescoes by artist, Max Weiler, and take a look at the former mining site. How was the stone transported back down to the valley? How was it prepared and turned into caustic magnesia in rotary kilns? You can expe-rience all that and more on this mountain hike, with fantastic views of the Tux and Zillertal Alps.

Approximately one hundred to one hundred and fifty years ago, the German and Austrian Alpine Associa-tions gradually built shelters in inhospitable alpine locations, in predominant-ly breathtakingly beautiful spots that are well worth making the effort to visit. Our Nature Park guides will explain how nature changes at increasing altitude levels, right up to the borders with rock and ice, where its inhabitants benefit from the situation or where nature knows its limits.

Up to the Elsalm “Melchermuas” – dairy man’s pancake and alpine farming Herbert GraslWe will walk from the Tux Center along a narrow mountain path towards Tettenjoch and on to Elsalm at 1865 m above sea level. If you listen carefully, you will hear the marmots whistling. These animals have made their lairs in the stone walls of the neighbouring alpine pastures. By keeping the area clear of mountain pine, pastures are able to thrive with an incredible biodiversity. Young people help alpine farmers maintain these “environmental construction sites”. The farmer will tell us all about this project while spoiling us with a serving of “Melchermuas”, a traditional alpine meal which they prepare themselves using butter, flour, milk and a pinch of salt. Our way back leads us up to the Kreuzjoch, and from there with a the descent back to Vorderlanersbach.

Steinbock.Worlds - Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund. The al-pine ibex is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition at the Zil-lertal Alps Nature Park and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th

century there was a population of seve-ral hundred animals, which was eradicated in a few years. Despite attempts to reintroduce ibex to the Zil-lertal Valley, only limited success has been enjoyed. A small population currently lives wild in the depths of the valleys, although seldom seen by visitors to the Nature Park. You can find out interesting information on the ibex at the Steinbock.Welten in Zillergrund, as well as enjoy the opportunity to see a few live examp-les up close. Open daily. Free admission!

Glacier.Worlds - Nature Park House Ginzling This is no exhibition in the normal sense of the word: No glass showca-ses, no boring information boards, but rather interactive, multimedia stations with a hands-on approach: see, touch and comprehend. The public Alpine Library is also located in the Nature Park House. A small

selection of books and maps as well as Nature Park gifts with our „Zillertaler Gletscherfloh“ logo is available for sale at the Nature Park Shop. ... Open daily in summer from 8.30 - 12.00 and 13.00 - 17.00 hours!

Nature Park.Worlds - Special Exhibition in Ginzling In 2011 the Nature Park celebrated a double anniversary – 20 years as a protected conservation area and 10 years as a designated Na-ture Park. Reason enough for the Nature Park to create a special

exhibition, which can be found in the old Ginzling junior school behind the church. It tells of glaciers, rocks, alpine meadows and grazing pastures as well as about the people that live in the Nature Park region. Open daily from 8.30 to 17.00 hrs. Free admission!

Cultur.Landscape.Worlds - Mitterstall Brandberg Cultural.Landscape.Worlds - one of the mountain farming cultural monuments in the Nature Park Region is the Mitterstall (Mitter Barn). After renovation work was completed on this listed building

in 2010, Mitterstall forms the centre piece of a Na-ture Park exhibition called, „Brandberg – our cultu-ral landscape through the ages“. The exhibition is spread over three rooms and tells of the harsh con-ditions alpine farmers had to endure, with details on the characteristic landscapes of pastures, mountain meadows and includes personal stories about the local people. Open daily. Free admission!
