2016 Summer Program

Intro to Volleyball JUNE 13 - 17 Grades 1 - 3Come learn the basics of volleyball! Tackling one important skill each day, you will start out by using balloons, then beach balls, and finally soft volleyballs to improve hand-eye coordination and the timing essential to success. Fun games and activities will help beginners get in the game!

Coding With KidsJUNE 20 - 24 Grades 1 - 3Coding is the essential language for knowledge creation. The earlier you start, the more practice you get, which in turn allows you to create a world of sophisticated games, robots, and learning apps. Using innovative and highly engaging teaching techniques, each student will receive his or her own Bitsbox kit. With Bitsbox, children learn to program by creating apps that work on computers and gadgets like iPads and Android tablets.

African Drumming-BantabaJUNE 27 - JULY 1 Grades 1 - 3Do you love the idea of playing a real African drum? In this class, Oumar Sagna, famed Senegalese performer and founder of the Sindoola Drum and Dance Ensemble, will teach you how to use your hands, feet, and your mind to play the drum rhythms and unique bell percussions that grace the traditional songs of the Congo and Guinea. On the last day, there will be a drum performance to show off your inner beat!

Have you always been curious about the benefits and skills your child might gain from Montessori? This summer is the perfect chance for your child to discover the unique beauty and wonder of a Milwaukee Montessori School classroom. Our Montessori Classroom Instruction is well enjoyed by all children and is the best solution for overcoming summer learning loss. Our teachers develop individually tailored learning plans based on each child's personality, learning pace and special interests. In a structured and orderly environment, children delight in lessons in reading, writing, mathematics, geography, zoology and botany, as well as music and art.

SESSION I: JUNE 13 - JULY 1SESSION II: JULY 5 - JULY 29

Montessori Children's House Classroom Instruction Grades K3 - K5

New this year! Milwaukee Montessori School is very pleased to offer a two-week summer course for lower elementary students entering first, second or third grade. Students will engage in research and interconnected lessons in the areas of mathematics, geometry, language, history, geography, and science from our Lower Elementary curriculum. Our experienced, trained staff will inspire students as well as support their individual academic needs. Children will have the opportunity to develop independence, confidence and friendships as they work and collaborate in a beautifully prepared Montessori environment. For current MMS students, this program offers a greater continuity for the next academic year. Children will benefit from an introduction to the Lower Elementary Montessori classroom, materials and daily routines. Strengthening core skills such as reading,

handwriting and math operations will help your child to hit the ground running in August!

Grades 1 - 3Students must be entering 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade.

Grades 1 - 3

SESSION I: JULY 18 - JULY 29

Montessori Lower Elementary Classroom Instruction

2015 Summer Program | 3

Insects: Lords of the EarthJULY 18 - 22 Grades 1 - 3Did you know that insects comprise 80% of animal life on earth? Or that there are some 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual living insects? To learn all about them, you will enjoy daily excursions to collect insects for brief observations. You will also conduct laboratory exercises that allow you to view insect species under powerful microscopes. Finally, you will gain true biological knowledge of insect evolution and adaptation by learning cool facts like how insects' special mouthparts help them eat. You'll also be equipped with items to help you observe and examine these fantastic creatures at home. The week will culminate with a special visit to the insect exhibit at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Cooking and Cultures JULY 18 - 22 Grades 1 - 3

Get your passport ready! Students will "travel" and explore the geography, culture, and food of India, Spain, China, France, and Russia. Then they will jump into the kitchen and learn to cook traditional dishes using indigenous ingredients from these culinary rich cultures.

Giant Mess; Giant Sculptures; Giant Birds JULY 25 - 29 Grades 1 - 3These great birds may not take to the skies, but they will be a delight to build! Using chicken wire, balloons, masking tape, straws, paper towel, and tissue rolls, children will learn how to create papier-mâché birds using distinctive sculpting and painting techniques. After constructing an armature, students will drape and layer papier-mâché strips to mold each bird with realistic shape and texture. Finally, paint and feathers will be added to make each unique creation come to life!

Number Ninjas JULY 25 - 29 Grades 1 - 3Quick! What's 7 x 6? Become a nimble, agile, math fact guru, and strengthen your math skills to become a true Number Ninja. In this class, you will learn tricky math games, create giant math projects, and deepen your knowledge of probability, ratios, money, measurement, patterns, and math operations.

Grades 2 and upDrama and Set Design JUNE 13 - 24 Grades 2 and upJourney "under the sea" with Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton, Sebastian, Flounder, Scuttle, the sea witch Ursula, and many more in Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID JR. Under the direction of Nancy Visintainer Armstrong, Artistic Director of the famed Sunset Playhouse, this production, with it's catchy music, gorgeous underwater scenes, and compelling plot, is sure to capture the hearts of student actors and audience members alike! Students will perform leading roles, learn stage choreography, sing in the chorus, work as stage crew members, and learn how to create sets and costumes for the production.

Clay Vessels-Ahoy!JUNE 27 - JULY 1 Grades 1 - 3Become the captain of your very own fruit boat! Use a clay slab roller to form the walls of your vessel, wood to make your mast, and canvas to create your sails. These ships may not float in the water, but they will keep your bagels, veggies, and fruit safely docked on a countertop or table. You will personalize your boat with added details, choice of glaze colors, and an official christening to name your

boat before sending her off on her maiden voyage to your home.

Minecraft: Wisconsin Pioneers JULY 5 - 8 Grades 1 - 3

Imagine yourself as an early settler or a Native American living in the Wisconsin area in the early 1800's. How will the two groups of people learn to live together in the often dangerous and unforgiving environment? Will you learn how to grow crops and barter to avoid starvation? What buildings and skills will the people in your town or village require? Fundamental needs must be met and social pitfalls avoided in the complex, interconnected virtual web you will weave with others in the amazing world of Minecraft!

Little Architects JULY 5 - 8 Grades 1 - 3

Calling all budding Frank Lloyd Wrights and Mies van der Rohes! Buildings and structures are an integral part of every child's world. Come explore the world of architecture through art concepts such as shape and line while using a variety of mediums and inspirations. Children will explore fundamental techniques in art such as slitting, inserting, cutting, and stacking to build custom architectural structures. Your child's own house will be the inspiration for a personal keepsake drawing. Form and function come together in this engaging class.

Robots Alive JULY 11 - 15 Grades 1 - 3Making robots come alive involves learning principles of mechanical design, construction, basic circuitry and computer programming. In this robot shop you will use a series of robotic kits to learn about the engineering and design principles that enliven robots to move and perform simple tasks. Working together in small groups, you will build and program your own robots that can crawl, swim, shuffle, or slither.

Dream and DrawJULY 11 - 15 Grades 1 - 3This painting class provides room for ample experimentation and messy self-expression. Using acrylic paint on a large canvas, you will learn how to make two dimensions come alive by painting and mastering the elements of art such as line, shape, form, balance, perspective, movement, color value, and texture. Each project is designed for small hands and BIG imaginations!

2016 Summer Program

SESSION DATES: JUNE 13 - JULY 29 | SAVE! REGISTER BEFORE MAY 6

Before setting off for adventures in and around Milwaukee, children will eat lunch together at MMS. Our creative and well-trained staff is able to tailor activities to the children’s interests. Children will have an opportunity to swim in one of several local pools every week as well as participate in fun and age appropriate field trips.

Grades 4 - 8Students must be entering 4th - 8th grade.

Minecraft: Medieval Europe JUNE 27 - JULY 1 Grades 4 -8Come to create and explore the unique and complex world of a Medieval fiefdom! Using Minecraft, students in this engaging and educational class will study medieval architecture and custom design fiefdoms according to historical maps and diagrams. They will then research medieval weapons and armor and reenact wars between fiefdoms by participating in traditional Minecraft PVP. Students will also experiment with the different roles and positions of people who lived and inhabited Medieval Europe and grow crops and barter with fellow students.

Photography JULY 5 - 8 Grades 4 - 8

In today's camera-rich world, we all take pictures, but that doesn't mean that our photos are the best that they can be! Our experienced and trained photography teachers will guide you through the steps to find the best angles, capture the perfect light, and master photography skills that give your images a professional polish. Using your own digital camera from home, you will take photos and learn to edit them using Photoshop. At the end of the week, you will have a personally designed, picture perfect photo album.

Carboard Battlebots JULY 11 - 15 Grades 4 - 8Using circuits, cardboard, and duct tape, students will work in teams to design and construct small robots that are intended to destroy one another. Students will employ modular, magnetic-based circuitry boards that snap together to power their unique creations. Many will be made, but only one battlebot will be triumphant. Will it be yours?

Med-Evil Engineering JULY 18 - 22 Grades 4 - 8

Did you ever want to catapult a water balloon and hit a bulls-eye 100 feet away? Well, here is your chance! Using plans derived by engineering pioneers of the Middle Ages, you will build a table-top catapult, trebuchet, and sundial. Then, in small teams, you will build a giant trebuchet to launch in a final battle of targets placed across

the school’s backyard.

3D Game Design With Unity JULY 25 - 29 Grades 4 - 8Our 3D power course will offer an introduction to Unity, an open source software that makes it possible for anyone to become a 3D developer! Students will be creating and manipulating original 3D models, designing games, and programming with C Sharp by Microsoft.
