How does the SHSM Summer-School program work?

Students have the opportunity to earn the two required SHSM Co-op credits during the month of July and first week in August. SHSM participants must complete a 20 hour pre-placement program and then work in a SHSM sector-specific job placement, as part of the completion requirements of the diploma.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Who is eligible to enrol? Any student who is enrolled in a Specialist High Skills Major diploma program is eligible to register for SHSM summer Co-op.

Are grade 10 students able to take part? It is possible, but not recommended. Ideally, students will complete their Cooperative Education component during or between Grade 11 and 12 so that the learning is integrated into the sector learning. If the student has been accepted into a SHSM program for next year, has previously taken any of the Grade 11 major credits, or would like to reach ahead to complete this component of the SHSM diploma program requirements, then they may enrol in the summer SHSM Co-op.

What are the attendance expectations? You should make every effort to attend all of the scheduled pre-placement sessions and be able to complete approximately 184 hours at the workplace during the month of July and first week in August. Any other circumstances should be discussed with and approved by the program supervisor.

How are assignments completed? Pre-placement assignments are to be completed prior to placement start date. Integration assignments can be emailed directly to your teacher. The final performance task should be completed by the last week of the course.

How do I obtain my placement? Students who wish to be paid for their summer Co-op must obtain their own work placement and follow Ministry regulations outlined and available online.

Students who will be completing an unpaid placement should attempt to secure their own placements but can request the assistance of the Cooperative Education teacher during their interview in May.

What credits will I get? Students who successfully complete their Cooperative Education experience will earn the two credits necessary to fulfill the Cooperative Education component of their SHSM diploma program.

Credits will be coded as and linked to one of the major or other required credits in the specific sector of their SHSM program. Cooperative Education credits also fulfill compulsory Group 1, 2 or 3 of the diploma or can count as elective credits. Students will also complete their compulsory WHMIS awareness and Ontario Skills Passport components for their SHSM diploma as part of the summer Co-op.

What is an appropriate placement?Your summer Co-op placement should take place at a job that ties to the sector in which you are enrolled in a SHSM program.

Can I be paid?Yes, with the agreement of your employer who must be willing to provide WSIB coverage. Paid Co-op placements must be secured by the student. It is not the responsibility of the Co-op teacher to obtain paid Co-op placements.

How do I contact my co-op teacher? Your Co-op teacher will contact you prior to the course start and will provide you with contact information.

Can I complete my placement outside of my home location? Yes, this may be possible. Placement information must be shared with your Co-op supervisor and Co-op teacher as quickly as possible to determine if the placement is appropiate and feasible. If approved the Co-op teacher will make appropriate travel plans to monitor you at your placement or may make arrangements with another board of education to monitor you, if possible.

Where will my summer school pre-placement classes take place? Classes will be located at a school within your regional area (Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills). Locations will be determined by student demand, facility availability and registrations received by a set due date.
