MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

DAY COURSESWEEK1 PFive Centuries of Art in Britain with Wayne Bennett

The SixteenthCenturyRoyal palaces and patronagefeature strongly as does theTudor impulse to create aRenaissance court to rivalanything abroad. The powerof the royal portrait comes tothe fore replacing, as it does, the wholesale destruction ofreligious art and architecture.

The SeventeenthCenturyThe flamboyance of theStuart court and the start of aglobal empire bring newtalent into the British story.Rubens, van Dyck and Lelyplay important parts as dothe aristocrats who began tocollect foreign art and buildgreat houses on anunprecedented scale.

The EighteenthCenturyWith the combination ofglobal economic and militarysuccess, a revitalisedmonarchy and a surfeit ofideas borrowed from ancientRome, Britain became themost important nation inEurope. A huge programmeof ostentatious buildingswere erected to glorifyindividual and nationalsuccess - and to house thevast amount of art beingproduced and imported fromthe continent.

The NineteenthCenturyThe Regency was theflourishing of Georgian tasteand this was followed by astrange combination of sobervictorian taste (laced with agood dose of sentimentality)and a certain extravagancewhich could only be achievedwith some very deep pockets.Technology too had animpact on the arts and theperiod saw the arrival ofpublic galleries andmuseums and great acts ofphilanthropy.

The TwentiethCenturyIn many ways the last centurysaw the slow erosion of manyartistic traditions.Impressionism andmodernism had enormousimpact. The watersheds oftwo World Wars heraldedhuge social, political andcultural change - not just inBritain but around the world.American art in particularinfluenced the second half ofthe century as did corporatepower and money.

Singing for Larks - Jazz and SwingHarmonies WeekendDinner Friday 19 - Tea Sunday 21 OctoberFees (£): s 424 l 365 H 365 u 259Singing with others is an exhilarating andliberating experience that everybody canenjoy. Singings for Larks workshops, run byFaith Watson, are based on the tradition oflearning songs by ear. This approach makesthe joy of singing with others easily accessibleto those who are new to singing, whilstoffering more experienced singers theopportunity to develop their aural skills. On this Jazz and Swing Harmonies weekendwe shall be exploring the kind of complex, close harmonies found in British andAmerican popular music of the 1920s, 30sand 40s. We may sing some standards fromthis period, unexpected songs that have beengiven the jazz or swing treatment and songsthat have been created purely for theseworkshops. Some of the melodies may befamiliar and therefore fairly quick to pick up,but the harmony parts tend to take longer tolearn and can offer a challenge even toexperienced acapella singers. Expect aswinging weekend of tantalizing melodies, crunchy harmonies and fiendish rhythms.Tutor: Faith Watson
