It’s time once again for LeTourneau University’s summer camps! Our camps are designed for children of all ages and feature a wide variety of fun and educational topics. Registration is easy. Just follow the steps below, and your young learner will be on the path to bright and wonderful things.

Choose the camp(s) to attend using the camp code listed with the camp date, camp name and fee (found on pages 18-21). Some camps may be offered more than once during the summer. Descriptions of each may be found throughout the catalog.

Registration & Discounts

Please register online, at www.letu.edu/camps

Multiple camper families are eligible for a family discount of 10% off the total camp costs.

Academic Camp Information

Camp times: Half-day 8 a.m.-noon or 1-5 p.m. or full-day 8 a.m. - 5p.m.

Check-in at Longview Hall: After 7:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.

Check-out at Longview Hall: Noon for half-day morning camps, 5 p.m. for half-day afternoon camps.

Camper’s grade: The grade campers will be entering as of September 1, 2012.

Campers receive a camp T-Shirt.

Snacks for each academic camp session will be available daily and are included in the cost of each camp.

For all-day campers, lunch will be available in the LETU Café for a cost of $40 for the week. For a small fee of $10 campers can bring their own lunch each day. Campers will be supervised during this time by camp staff.

Experienced and mature male and female directors, coaches and counselors provide supervision for your campers.

From Dallas or Shreveport, take Interstate 20 to Longview and exit #595 Estes Parkway North. Follow LeTourneau University signs, and veer right, onto Mobberly Avenue. The university is located on the right at 2100 South Mobberly Avenue.

Movie MakersBe a MOVIE STAR! You’ll help write a script and be an actor in a MOVIE. You can help create a music video, a dramatic scene, or be the funniest comedian on the screen. See the movie at the end of the week on LeTourneau’s Big Screen Movie Theater. Then take home your very own DVD of the movie to show to your friends.

Hollywood Movie StarsHave some fun and star in a MOVIE! Be an actor; create a scene; wear a costume! Take home your very own movie on a DVD to show your friends on your television. Stage FunTake the stage and have fun performing every day of camp. Master the art of telling a joke. Enjoy being the star of a play without having to learn a lot of lines through reader’s theatre. Lip sync to great musical numbers. Choreograph musical skits with a group, and enjoy the applause of the other campers. Learn all about writing a script, story, or poem to use to enter-tain or educate others. Play charades and experience how easy it is to use body language to talk for you. Don’t be left behind when the curtain goes up. Be a star every day of camp!

Camp’s got TalentTIME TO SHOW OFF!! Every camper will entertain the audience with his/her favorite talent. Each camper will perform with a group and a solo act. The campers will work all week polishing their solo acts and their group acts. It will be an experience with team work, brainstorming, script writing, and idea sharing. The week will come to an end with a performance for parents and friends. Everyone will get the chance to prove that Camp really does have talent!

Wild World of Arts and CraftsHands-on experiences await you everyday with everything from painting to paper-mâché to fun-filled crafts. Get ready to take the world into your own hands in this exciting week of new adventures.

3D ArtCampers will have fun learning new ways to create art. Throughout the week, campers will learn how to create artwork that literally leaps off the paper! Some of the projects include creating a robot, friendship bracelets, making a unique and colorful mobile, and a fun and funky sculpture. Come and experience art in a way you never have before.

Cool CreationsAre you ready to create some exciting new projects? Then this is the camp for you! Learn how to make your own play dough, create a volcano that really erupts, sculpt clay and get paint between your fingers as you make cool creations.

Jewelry MakingDo you love bling? Come learn how to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings. We will use a variety of colors, shapes and sizes of “gems” as well as different clasps, wires and elastic string.

Tape ArtCampers will learn how to make cool duct tape items such as hats, wallets, flip flops and flowers, as well as stick someone to the wall! Campers will also learn how to make packing tape sculptures and a life-size model for display. Students may be required to provide additional tape for larger projects.

Artsy AnimalsWho knew that drawing animals could be so much fun! In this camp we will use many different mediums to create wild and wacky animals. Campers will not only learn how to draw several animals, but also how to bring them to life using paints, pastels, colored pencils, watercolors, fabric and tissue paper. Get ready to be messy, because it’s a jungle out there!

Kids’ ArchitectureIn this fun-filled camp, you will form construction companies and contract to build bridges, towers, and roller coasters. Also, you will have the opportunity to be the designer, the construction foreman, or the accountant. Your structure must satisfy the requirements, come in under budget, and survive rigorous testing. The structure will be made out of wood, pasta, paper, and straws.

Scrapbooking 101Are you creative AND love to take pictures? If you are, then join me for an exciting week of learning how to preserve your memories by scrapbooking. We will learn the basics of layout, color and journaling. We will have lots of stickers, cut-outs and glitter. Campers will need to bring 50 photographs that can be trimmed or cut. At the end of the week you will have a keepsake album and knowledge of how-to-do-it again.

Robotics

lego BeginnersDesign, create, and program models based on the theme using simple drag and drop programming software. Some of the components include LEGO bricks, a motor, and other special elements such as tilt and motion sensors. Students will then test their designs and programming, making adjustments as necessary.

lego Robotics: Robo BasicsBuilding instructions for a basic bot will be provided as this class is for learning about programming. Using Lego NXT-G kits, participants will learn programming basics of autono-mous robots with the simple drag and drop Mindstorms software. Skills to be covered include names of parts, basic care, moving forward, reverse, acceleration, different types of turns, circles, and lamps.

lego Robotics: Robotics 1Building instructions will be provided for a basic bot as this class is for learn-ing about programming. Participants will use Lego NXT-G kits to gain knowl-edge of the use of sensors (light, touch, sound, and ultra sonic) in programming autonomous robots. Switch blocks and loop blocks will be introduced so that robots can be programmed to make decisions and run continuous programs. If time allows, we can look at “My Blocks”.

lego Robotics: SWARMGet out your bug spray and bug nets, there is a swarm coming. This biology lesson is going to be taught by robots. Explore the way insects and birds move as groups with Lego Robotics. Teams will be programming their robot to interact with other robots so that the group moves and works as one.

lego Robotics: ExplorationKids can select and follow the building instructions to create a robot design, and then download readymade programs. These programs may be used as an introduction to more advanced programming, or to improve what kids already know. This camp is loosely structured in order for kids to explore and learn the way they do best… following their natural curiosity.

insane ScienceIs it magic, or science? Discover the secrets of chemistry. Perform sleight-of-hand tricks with physics. Read minds using math. Learn how your brain and senses make things appear that aren’t really there and miss things that are there. On Friday campers get to put on a show and perform their favorite acts of magic/science.

leTourneau Space CampYes, it is Rocket Science! Join the hundreds of other young astronauts who have set their sights on the stars. Learn about the Solar System, Newton’s laws of motion, and build a different take-home project everyday. Construct, decorate, and launch your very own REAL rocket, that will soar nearly 1000 feet into the Texas sky! Don’t get left on the ground. Outer Space may be infinite, but we have room for only a limited number of Junior Space Explorers.

Space Camp Rocket SummerIf you have been in Space Camp with Mr. Wilkinson and had a blast, then you want to move up to the next level with Space Camp Rocket Summer. Skills

Basic First Aid and Survival SkillsCampers will learn how to provide basic first aid and apply survival skills. We will cover how to make splints, slings, bandages and eye patches, remove foreign objects, call for help and other basic first aid (no certifications). Survival techniques will also be taught. You’ll learn: how to make a basic shelter; how to navigate; different ways to build a fire; about safe water and food; how to signal for help; and what not to do. We will have a group competition at the end of the week to challenge the skills learned during the week.

Manners Boot CampToday’s teen faces daunting personal and social challenges. Manners Boot Camp shows your teen how to navigate with etiquette and behavior based on kindness and consideration. Help your teen become a better friend, courteous guest and a thoughtful hostess by learning the various forms of etiquette including table and dining manners! Campers discover that making good first impressions, presenting themselves with integrity and practicing good manners should be a way of life. Poise and self-confidence help young people feel good about themselves and connect with others. Last day ends with Party Pizzazz, planned and prepared by the teens, showcasing the manners learned all week. All teens will be presented with a personal size leather bound pink etiquette book. (For Teen Girls Only)

Say “No Thank You” to Bad Manners! A fun interactive camp week that helps children learn poise, polish and how to present themselves with confidence. Learn tips for writing the perfect thank you note! Practice how to be a good guest as well as a good host. Table setting, dining manners and eating certain foods with ease count too. Good grooming techniques begin on the inside - being happy with ourselves will help us shine on the outside! Having a good heart and showing respect and kindness to others are the main themes running throughout the series. On the last day each camper will participate in “Party Pizzazz” given by the children for each other showcasing the manners they have learned in a party setting they prepare. (Coed)

Flight pre-FlightDiscover aviation in a full week of learning and activities. Campers will learn about how an airplane flies, read real aeronautical charts, understand aviations weather forecasting, examine airplane engines, know all those crazy flight instru-ments, and visit an air traffic control tower. In addition, at the end of the week, campers will take a short flight in one of LeTourneau University’s aircraft.

Flight: pilotAfter completing Pre-Flight Camp, the adventures in the sky await as campers take their aviation skills to a higher level. Campers will pilot the airplane with an experienced flight instructor beside them. They will plan a cross-country flight in aviator’s “ground school”, practice the cross-country flight in the flight simulators, taxi and take-off, and fly the cross-country flight in one of LeTourneau’s airplanes. The student will log approximately 1 hour of actual flight instruction and get to keep their own log book. They will spend a total of around 3 hours flying with 1 in the pilot’s seat and 2 as a passenger.

Airplane CampThis camp is designed for the young airplane enthusiast. Campers will study the history of aviation, principles of flight and components of an airplane. Students will practice wing lift by constructing their own paper airplanes and will learn what modifications work best to control lift and flight. Mock instrument panels will be built along with a rubber band powered airplane. This class will include a tour of LeTourneau University’s Abbott Aviation Center at Gregg County Airport.

Reading Rocks!Reading should never be something that your child dreads! Reading becomes fun and exciting in this camp dedicated to teaching your children 2 quick-tips on how to make reading fun. Join Mrs. Tammy Baker as she sheds new light on reading!

Once Upon A TimeReader’s Theater is such a fun way to brush up on your reading skills. Take part in turning a fairy tale into a script. Then enjoy acting for an audience at the Longview Public Library’s “Story Time” on the last day of camp.

Self Defense for Children Kids learn through play. That’s why this class is full of games and activities that translate into self-defense later in life. Games like stranger danger and balance drills will keep them on task and interested. The children are our future, lets keep them safe. introduction to Martial ArtsWhere can your kids learn self-defense and have a blast? LeTourneau University’s Introduction to Martial Arts camp for kids. Learning martial arts at an early age will provide your children with life skills. Classes are structured to work the body as well as strengthen the mind. Discipline, respect, and honor will be an intricate part of each class. Not to mention it’s FUN!

Fun

Hero Clix CampDo you like superheroes? Do you like strategy games? Then Hero Clix is the game for you. Come join Mr. Matthew Haesecke in the Solheim Center for hours of fun and competition. All you need to bring is yourself and a desire to learn a new and exciting game. Each camper will be able to design their own team of superheroes to play with. They will compete against other campers in head to head play or full on tournaments. Prizes for winning tournaments and overall improvement of playing ability will be given. (Hero Clix is a game that uses super hero figures that make up a team of superheroes to compete against other teams of superheroes on a map in a strategic game similar to but way more fun and exciting than chess. Basketball Campsgirls LeTourneau Women’s Basketball camp is designed to provide a fun filled week of competition while learning the fundamentals of the game. Work side-by-side with current players and coaches for a great learning experience. Emphasis will be placed on developing ball handling and passing skills as well as shooting. There will be time devoted to defense as well as some position specific techniques. Each camper will have the opportunity to perform as an individual and also learn the aspects of teamwork during our competition and games.Campers will need to bring a pair of basketball shoes to change into. Baseball CampsBaseball All Star CampIt will be a camp filled with fun and intense instructions on basic funda-mentals important for baseball players of all ages and skill levels. Campers must bring a glove, baseball pants and cleats everyday. As you consider your child attending this camp, know that the instruction is designed for those campers who have a natural desire and passion to further their skills in the game of baseball. It is fundamental, but it is not introductory to the game of baseball. Fundamentals covered will include: throwing, catch and throw skills (play catch properly), hitting, running bases, sliding techniques, general infield play, general outfield play, and basic pitching.

golf CampThe LeTourneau University Golf Camp will be for those in the 1st grade up to the 6th grade. Instruction will focus on teaching the swing, short game, bunker play, chipping, putting, and course management. Each camper will have the opportunity to learn from a PGA apprentice teaching professional, a college golf coach, and current college players. These individuals will teach and encourage all of the campers how to enjoy the game of golf. The camp will provide plenty of breaks and shade. Also make sure that each camper wears a hat and has sunscreen. Each camper will receive a hat and a shirt, and snacks will be available at the campers cost. Drop off and pick up at Oak Forest Country Club.

Equipment needed: Gym bag or backpack, swim suit and towel, extra shorts, gym shoes, and water bottles. There will be a camp store available during break time to purchase drinks or snacks if desired.
