SUMMER AT AKERSHUS FORTRESS 2018

Today, Akershus Fortress is a living venue with museums, visitor centre, restaurant, concert venue and outdoor stage. It has a special position as a national monument due to its location in the capital and its rich history linked to Crown and Government. Its history ranges from dramatic acts of war, sombre chapters related to imprison- ment and the occupation period, to its present-day peaceful role as a national monument and as a recreation area for the general public. The fortress is the headquarters of the Norwegian Armed Forces’ top political and military leadership, and the Prime Minister's offices have been located here since 2011. Akershus Fortress is visited by more than 1,000,000 people each year.

The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency (FB) is responsible for management of the fortress includ- ing land disposal, overall coordination, as well as building conservationand for facilitating new uses under the motto "New life on historical ground". The Norwegian Armed Forces JointServices (FFT) is responsible for military ceremoniesand dissemina-tion of military history, and manages the fortress's visitor centre, museums and the military bands. The Akershus Fortress Foundation for Art and Culture (SAKK) is a civilian body at Akershus fortress and is responsible for the planning and

implementation of art- and cultural events for the general public.

NEW LIFE ON HISTORICAL GROUNDThe Norwegian Defence Estates Agency manages 14 fortresses throughout the country. These are unique and irreplaceable cultural monuments, but also venues for industry, culture and experi-ences. The national fortresses have a total of 3.8 million visitors each year.

SUMMER AT AKERSHUS FORTRESSThe commandant, the fortress administrator and all the other active players at the fortress are proud to be able to present an exciting summer programme with something for everyone. There is a variety of events and historical presentations of Norway's national monument.

PLACES TO VISIT

We are located in “the long red house”, also called the Artillery Building dating from 1774 at Karpedammen. Come to the Visitor Centre first, which is a good starting point for further exploration of Akershus Fortress.

The Visitor Centre has two exciting exhibitions with themes from Akershus Fortress’s history. We have regular drop-in guided tours throughout the year and offer hot beverages as well as a friendly museum shop. Our employees are updated at

all times as to what is going on at the site and are also well-informed about Oslo as a tourist destination.

EXHIBITIONS

Changing exhibitions with themes from Akershus Fortress’s history:

PRISONERS IN AKERSHUS – FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO 1950The exhibition with text, photographs and unique artefacts gives a chronological history of Akershus Castle and Fortress as a prison from the Middle Ages until the final closure of the prison in 1950. Special attention is given to particularly prominent prisoners such as Gjest Baardsen and Ole Høiland. You can also see the terrible weapon "Galmand" that Rudolf Hansen used against a prison guard in 1927 with a fatal result.

1716 – THE SIEGEThree hundred years ago "The Lion of the North" -the formidable warrior King Karl XII of Sweden- attacked Norway with 8,000 soldiers. The Swedes invaded the city of Christiania and besieged Akershus Fortress. The exhibition is the story of the siege that is followed chronologically from when the national border was crossed on 8 March until the Swedes withdrew after 39 eventful days.

62 DAYS – THE BATTLE OF NORWAY 1940 (1)On the 75th anniversary of the attack on Norway on 9 April 1940, the Armed Forces Museum opened its new permanent exhibition: 62 Days – The Battle of Norway 1940. Authentic German and Norwegian artefacts are on display, along with photos and news from the dramatic days in 1940. The exhibition presents what many people may have experienced during the 62 days: the battles, threats of war, uncertainty and destruction. Every- thing is presented by means of a completely new and dramatic exhibition architecture.

THE WAR CROSS (KRIGSKORSET) – NORWAY'S HIGHEST MILITARY HONOUR (2)His Majesty King Harald opened the Armed Forces Museum's most recent exhibition on 8 May 2015, Norway’s Liberation and Veterans Day. Since 1941, 282 people have been awarded the War Cross with swords for extraordinary efforts during World War II and, more recently, armed conflicts in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Afghanistan. Listen to the War Cross recipients recounting dramatic events and view personal items.

The Armed Forces Museum is well worth a visit. Here you can experience military history from the Middle Ages and up to the present. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, you will also find temporary exhibitions. The museum also has many unique and exciting artefacts, documentation, photos and books. INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS (3)The Intops Exhibition deals with Norwegian soldiers in international operations, about Norway's participation in foreign operations after World War II, such as in Germany, Korea, the Middle East, Africa, the Balkans, the Arabian Gulf, Afghanistan and Libya.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE ATOMIC BOMB – THE COLD WAR 1945–90 (4)In this exhibition we recount the story of the reconstruction of the country and the optimism immediately after the war. This gives an impres-sion of the political and military situation, with uncompromising stand-offs between the United States and the Soviet Union with rearmament and the threat of nuclear war.

MILITARY POWER 1807 – 1870 (5)The exhibition shows the role and development of military power in, and on behalf of Norwegian society, through the wars in 1808 and 1814. Some of the themes in the exhibition include "Soldier and Conscription" – Swea and Nore in battle dress reclining on the same shield (joint military exercises), "in the service of nation- and society building" and "Developments in Weapons Technology".

FITNESS FOR ACTIVE SERVICE-THE ARMY MEDICAL SERVICE AT 75 YEARS (6)The Army Medical Service, FSAN, was founded in London in 1941 with total responsibility for its service in the Norwegian Armed Forces. On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, The Armed Forces Museum has created an exhibition on the Army Medical Service’s history, its duties and the people who have been part of its history.

NORWAY'S RESISTANCE MUSEUM

Here you can walk through an exhibition that deals with the resistance struggle and daily life in Norway during World War II. Both civilian and military resistance are described. Through the panopticon, the photos, sound recordings and film clips bring to life the history and this helps to give a unified picture of the occupation period from 9 April 1940 to May 8, 1945.

The museum is situated at the top of Akershus Fortress and is located in the building "double

battery and half-timbered house", with the oldest parts dating from the 1690 's.

THE LIBERATION KINGSOriginal portraits of King Haakon VII, King Olav V, and King Harald V are painted by Ross Kolby. The paintings show the kings of indepen-dent Norway at the age of 75. The exhibition was unveiled in March 2015 in the presence of King Harald V. The portraits have been donated as a gift to the Norwegian Resistance Museum.

AKERSHUS CASTLE

The castle has undergone several changes since the 14th century. Different historical periods have left their marks and the castle can therefore be read like a history book. Akershus Castle has had various functions over the years including as a royal residence, offices of central government administration, courts of law, archives, a prison and not least, as a castle and fortress. Today the castle functions as the government's main residence for official events and as a museum. Here you will find the remains of the original medieval castle, rooms from the Danish/Norwegian Kings '

residence, gloomy dungeons, narrow hallways and magnificent halls.

There is hardly any other building in Norway that has played such a central role in our history over such a long time – and still does. The beautifully furnished halls today form the framework around the Government's official events, and in the Castle Church services, weddings and concerts are held. Not least, the castle is visited annually by thousands of people from Norway and abroad who wish to experience the history of the site.

AKERSHUS CASTLE CHURCH

A visit to Akershus Castle Church is a special experience. The beautiful interior of the church invites you to enjoy calm, reflection and church services. The church is located in Akershus Castle, at the top of the fortress. Under it is situated the royal mausoleum. Both the mausoleum and the church are part of the tourist route through the castle. Akershus Castle Church is a formal Royal burial church and serves as the main church of the Norwegian Armed Forces. The church has seating for approx. 150.

A service is usually celebrated on two Sundays a month and on certain memorial days for the Armed Forces and the nation. There are no church services in July. The Castle Church is a popular concert venue, and with its superb acoustics it is considered one of Oslo's best venues for chamber music. The church is often used by external bodi-es such as the Oslo Chamber Music Festival, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and the Barratt Due Music Institute.

THE ARMED FORCES STAFF MUSIC CORPS CELEBRATES 200 YEARS IN 2018

Besides its official duties, the band has an extensive concert programme in the Eastern Norway region, with a total of 20 concerts throughout the year. Most of these are held in the band’s own concert hall, Ridehuset at Akershus Fortress.

The Armed Forces Staff Music Corps safeguards traditions and takes on assignments on behalf of the nation, the Royal Family, the Parliament, the Government and the Norwegian Armed Forces in connection with, for example, state visits, national anniversaries, and official ceremonies.

The Armed Forces Staff Music Corps is Norway's largest professional wind instrument orchestra. The band was established on 1.1.1818 (known then as the Second Brigade's marching band) and has been the Armed Force’s most important representative orchestra. The band's primary task is to represent the Armed Forces nationally and internationally at anniversaries and ceremonies, as well as in the civilian-military cultural cooperation.

15

The Armed Forces ' staff band is with its 200 years Oslo's oldest music institution. Its size and members have increased over the years, from 19 musicians in 1818 to 39 today. The band has played a significant role in the musical life of the entire region, not only as an independent ensemble, but also in collabora-tion with other cultural institutions. In the past, the band was also an educational institution for young musicians of limited means before the conservatory and the music academy were established. The role of military music has adapted to the Armed Forces' development and structural changes throughout the country's history. The function of the Norwegian Armed Forces is to protect and safeguard the values and the culture that constitute our society.

The band also participates in international military music festivals and Tattoos. The repertoire extends from the classical wind repertoire to today's pop-ular music. The band performs and orders works from both established and emerging composers and arrangers, and contributes greatly to the recordings of both new and older music for wind instruments and concert bands. This is how the band contributes to the development and main-tenance of the wind instrument repertoire both nationally and internationally. During the sum-mer, the band performs changing of the guards rom Akershus Fortress to the Royal Palace and plays in the music pavilion at the Studenterlunden (students ' grove).

MORE INFORMATION

FESTNINGEN RESTAURANTThe Fortress Restaurant is a brasserie at one of the best locations in Oslo. We serve á la carte and today's menu for both lunch and dinner. The dishes are pre- pared by our expert chefs and are based on exciting and seasonal produce. During the summer months, we serve lunch and dinner in our outdoor restaurant.

Building 22 was originally built as a prison in 1836. Since then, the building has been used as a laboratory kitchen and office building. It was the Defence Estates Agency that started the renovation project and decided that the building would be used for running a restaurant.

On 16 October 2013 the Fortress Restaurant opened in the old prison in Akershus Fortress. With a panoramic view of the Oslo Fjord, Aker Brygge and the area around Oslo City Hall, it is one of the best views Oslo can offer its visitors. The Fortress Restaurant is now a rustic brasserie in a charming and historic setting, with seating for 190 people in all and two magnificent kitchens. In the summertime, seating for 300 is available in the outdoor terrace restaurant, which is built on two levels with breathtaking views and unique historic surroundings.

GUARD PARADES

GUARD PARADESThe guard parades from Akershus Fortress to the Royal Palace are the surest sign of spring in the capital, and the streets are filled with the rhythm of marching music.

Anyone who wants to is welcome to follow the parade.

All guard parades start from Akershus Fortress at about 13.10.

PAVILION CONCERTSSince 1880, the Staff Band has delighted Oslo citi-zens with concerts in the music pavilion outside The National Theatre. At the time, the pavilion was built for the Staff Band, and we still use it frequently during the summer months. Our pavilion concerts are held after the guard parades to the Royal Palace, and our wish is to spread happiness among our audiences with summery and entertaining music. You can also enjoy an ice cream, coffee or the like at one of the many adjacent outdoor restaurants.

The pavilion concerts are advertised at forsvaret.no/stabsmusikken

All pavilion concerts start at approx. 14.00 after the guard parade, and are held in the music pavilion in Studenterlunden.

GUARD PARADES AND PAVILION CONCERTS

During the spring- and summer months you can experience marching music in the streets of Oslo when the guard parades go from Akershus Fortress to the Royal Palace. You can also enjoy a concert at the Music Pavilion in Studenterlunden after the changing of the guard at the palace!
