Las Adelitas Arizona has been a

strong supporter of the Mexican

American Studies (MAS) program

in TUSD and the work that the

department and staff have done to

advance educational equity for our

local youth.

Earlier this year, TUSD

board member Michael Hicks ap-

peared on “The Daily Show” and

demonstrated an impressive lack of

knowledge about MAS — the pro-

gram he has been working hard to

ban — among many other things. He

also suggested that students only sup-

ported the program because the teachers

would give them free burritos. Dumb.

In April of this year, Las Adelitas

Arizona joined community and student organiza-

tions in support of the MAS program at TUSD and

it’s director, Sean Arce.

At the board meeting, several organiza-

tions collaborated to make burritos and art to

hand out to the community. Gracias to AFSCME

449, Casa Maria, Citizens for Educational Excel-

lence, Derechos Humanos, Save Ethnic Studies,

SJEP, Tucson High MEChA, UNIDOS. And Dwight

Dorothy Iana Adjovu - Rest in Peace

This June, we lost a bright star

and a dear friend and Adelita.

Dorothy Adjovu was a

wonderful individual and a great

friend to many. She joined Las

Adelitas Arizona in 2011 and

grew dear to all that knew her.

She was a kind,

thoughtful, and dedicated indi-

vidual with the warmest of spirits

and a beautiful smile we will never

forget.

We will miss her dearly

and wish her friends, family, and

loved ones our deepest condo-

lences and blessings.

We love you Dorothy!

In March of this year, Las Adeli-

tas Arizona hosted a Mother’s

Day brunch to fundraise for the

non-profit and celebrate the

women who have supported us

throughout our lives.

The event raised nearly

$1,000 for Las Adelitas Arizona

and gave our families a great

opportunity to come together in

support of an organization that advo-

cates for the civic engagement of

Latinas throughout Arizona.

Thank you to our sponsors,

Angelica’s Wedding & Event Center,

Every year the Southern Arizona

Center Against Sexual Assault

(SACASA) holds the annual Dine out

for Safety fundraiser in support of the

great work done by this local non-

profit.

Did you know someone is

affected by sexual violence every 2.5

minutes? In our community, these

challenges are even greater, as often

cultural norms play a role in rates at

which women report assaults and

abuse.

Mi Familia Vota Citizenship Workshops

Mi Familia Vota is

a non-profit, non-partisan

organization that focuses

on Latino community en-

gagement. The organiza-

tion registers Latina/os to

vote and hosts regular citi-

zenship workshops to as-

sist community members

in filling out the forms to

apply for citizenship.

Las Adelitas Ari-

zona volunteers helped

eligible residents fill out fee

waiver forms and

their N-400 applica-

tion for naturaliza-

tion.

With the

assistance of Las

Adelitas Arizona

volunteers, Mi Fa-

milia Vota has been

able to help close to

150 people apply for

Citizenship this

year!

Thanks to

all the wonderful

volunteers!

On March 10th and June 2nd of this

year, Las Adelitas Arizona members

volunteered their time at Mi Familia

Vota citizenship workshops.

Celebrating the Adelitas in our Lives Fundraiser

Former Las Adelitas AZ

Chairwomen Regina Romero

and Montserrat Caballero

and all the local businesses that donated

food and beverages in order to make the

event a success. We had a great time

celebrating the everyday Adelitas in our

lives for a great cause.

Adelitas volunteering at MFV citizenship fair

SACASA provides resources to wom-

en who are affected by sexual assault and their

families. Montserrat Caballero, former Las

Adelitas Arizona chairwoman, is the executive

director of this wonderful organization.

This year, several Adelitas volunteered

at local restaurants to raise funds for SACASA

and support the valuable work they do for our

community. Thank you to all the Adelitas that

took part, and the great local restaurants that

supported the event, and of course SACASA

for all they do for the women of our

community.

and their families.

The event this year

was held at the home of Wen-

dy Cevallos, former Las Adeli-

tas AZ chair. Thanks for the

great ideas and gracias to all

the new faces and longtime

members that joined us!

This year Las Adelitas AZ

continued it’s tradition of

hosting an annual New

Year’s brunch.

Every year we try

to get together in January to

catch up with members and

discuss goals for the organi-

zation in the year to come.

Cesar Chavez March 2012

Adelitas at Chavez Rally

“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You

cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read.

You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You

cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.

We have seen the future, and the future is ours”

- Cesar Chavez

This year Las Adelitas Arizona members marched in memory of the great

Cesar Chavez. The march this year fell on Cesar’s actual birthday, March

31st, and shortly after the death of Richard Chavez, his brother and fellow

UFW activist. The marcha was especially critical in light of the heightened

attacks on our community, including SB1070, expanded voter ID laws, and

the attack on ethnic studies in our own backyard. LAAZ walked with the

community gave out free water at the rally. We hope to see the event

continue to grow in Tucson and across the state, and for the spirit of

community to bring us together in honor of the Chavez legacy.
