To the MANNA Community: At the end of July, I will be stepping down as Executive Director of MANNA, a position I have held since April 1998. Words can hardly describe how fortunate I feel to have had the privilege of leading this uniquely powerful organization for the last six years. It was never hard for me to give my heart to MANNA. I am deeply moved by the stigma and unfairness our clients face, and I am energized by the way MANNA addresses this - bringing together people from every walk of life, to prepare delicious food that would make anyone’s mother proud; delivering it promptly, reliably and with love; and providing state of the art nutritional services – all free of charge. It is exciting the way MANNA uniquely links chefs and dancers, artists and business people, students and seniors, gay and straight people, clinicians and corporations, city dwellers and suburbanites - to deliver nourishment to people who really need it. While I am of course proud of the role I have played at MANNA, the real credit for MANNA’s success goes to all of you who are reading this message. MANNA’s past impact, and more importantly its great promise for the future, is based upon the devotion of talented staff and the dedication of diverse volunteers and donors. In September, I will be joining Korman Communities as Vice President and National Sales Manager. My office will be located at the Korman Communities property at 222 West Rittenhouse Square. This marks a career-change for me, having spent the past 20 years in the non- profit sector. MANNA harnesses our community’s positive energy, gathers it into a bustling downtown kitchen, and sends it back out again in the hands and hearts of caring volunteers who nourish those in need, and in so doing, enrich themselves. Through MANNA, new families are formed, new friendships are created, bridges are built, and barriers of ignorance are overcome.

This marks a career-change for me, having spent the past 20 years in the non-profit sector. The Kormans are extremely generous supporters of MANNA; I look forward to working with this wonderful company and family for many years to come.

MANNA is a creative enterprise. MANNA harnesses our community’s positive energy, gathers it into a bustling downtown kitchen, and sends it back out again in the hands and hearts of caring volunteers who nourish those in need, and in so doing, enrich themselves. In the process, we accomplish something that none of us could achieve alone. Through MANNA, new families are formed, new friendships are created, bridges are built, and barriers of ignorance are overcome. I am lucky and grateful to have been part of this idealistic and essential enterprise.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the support you have given me and MANNA.

SUMMER 2004 Executive Director: Greg Goldman

For individuals who have considered v o l u n t e e r i n g at MANNA over the years, but have had to consider job and family responsibilities first, perhaps the summer offers an ideal time to lend a hand in our kitchen or make deliveries.

One would think MANNA would be overflowing with volunteers in the summer months, when the workload at most schools and businesses is lighter. But MANNA struggles as the summer moves through. The hustle and bustle of volunteers is almost nonexistent as our chefs work longer hours and staff attempts to fill the void left from vacationing volunteers and students who have returned home from college or headed to the shore.

MANNA drivers are crucial to our mission of delivering nourishment - both physical and emotional- to the clients we serve. It takes a special kind of person to deliver MANNA meals. Our need for compassionate drivers is ever-present, but at critically low levels during the summer months.

For those who have some time on their hands during the dog days of summer, MANNA chefs and distribution would love to hear from you.

For those looking for some social activity, enjoyed in the cool environment of MANNA’s kitchens, please consider making a difference this summer by volunteering.

Event

Heartfelt thanks to the 20+ generous chefs that came together for ChefAID 2004 at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton this April. The night was a phenomenal success raising over $110,000 for MANNA.

MANNA Glam was in full force at this year’s A Show of Hands, with a night right out Hollywood’s most glittery soirées. Caviar, champagne, and beautiful people abounded – but the artwork stole the show raising over $130,000 for MANNA.

Dancers of Pennsylvania Ballet joined forces for a powerful Shut Up & Dance at The Merriam Theater. The event was attended by over 1,500 people and raised over $104,000 for MANNA. The After-Party, a chance to “dance with the dancers”, was great fun for all, at the former Avenue B.

RecapsP h i l a d e l p h i a Magazine’s Design Home 2004 opened in the heart of Delaware County this May with 100% of tour ticket proceeds benefiting MANNA. Over 2,000 visitors attended the month long event.

Fiscal Change

As of July 1, 2004, MANNA will be changing its fiscal year from January 1 through December 31 to July 1 through June 30. The shift is being made to more accurately reflect MANNA’s flow of income. As 40% of MANNA’s annual income is received between October and December, this change will better assist staff and board in fiscal planning.

MANNA Notes

An executive search will take place for MANNA’s new Executive Director. A committee has also been established consisting of representatives from MANNA’s board, staff, donors, volunteers and clients to assist in the selection process.

Beyond MANNA MealsBeyond MANNA MealsA Closer Look at Modern Day Nutrition Myths

MANNA met rapper Missy Elliot while she was on the Ladies First Tour in April. As one of the new spokespeople for Viva Glam V Lipstick - the primary fundraising tool for the MAC AIDS Fund - Missy Elliot pre-sented MANNA a check for $75,000.

Rachel Mindich, Registered Dietitian for MANNA, discusses when good intentions lead to bad nutritional choices.

Myth 1: Feed a cold, starve a fever. The best way to fight a cold is to maintain regular eating patterns. Fevers can cause a decrease in appetite, but starvation is never advised.

The best way to keep up hydration is by drinking plenty of fluids such as Gatorade and eating bland foods or clear liquids such as chicken broth, Jello, crackers, and toast. The body has high-calorie needs during illness – especially with a fever.

Myth 2: All carbohydrates are bad when you are trying to lose weight.Losing weight requires burning more calories than are taken in. Reducing caloric intake and exercising is the best way to achieve results. Only carbohydrates provide fuel to the brain, which is why they are needed, but best in moderation.

Simple carbohydrates such as cookies, sodas, fruit drinks, and ice cream are loaded with calories, sugar and fat. They do not satisfy an appetite for any length of time, and should be avoided.

Reduced portion sizes of complex carbohydrates such as breads, pasta, potatoes, and other starchy vegetables will also cut down on caloric intake. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are preferable as they are lower in calories and higher in fiber and water.

Myth 3: Weight resistance exercise is not beneficial when trying to lose weight. Both forms of exercise should be part of any exercise regimen, even when trying to lose weight. Aerobic exercise burns calories. Anaerobic exercise (or weight resistance) builds muscle. This exercise also boosts metabolism and sculpts the body. Muscle does weigh more than fat, but with the right routine anyone can shed pounds and tone muscles.

Myth 4: Nutritional drinks are good for everyone.Nutritional supplements are high in calories and sugar. They are meant for people who need to gain weight and drink them in addition to or in lieu of food. Many people drink them when they are having a difficult time eating solid foods.

People that are at their ideal body weight should not drink nutritional supplements. It is healthier to meet nutritional needs through foods, and supplements can cause too much weight gain by someone who is already at their ideal weight.

April 19-24 was National Volunteer Week

MANNA recognized the more than 1,000 volunteers that support the organization annually. Raffles were held for AMC movie tickets, Phillies’ tickets, and 3 US Airways vouchers. Pictured above, employees from GlaxoSmithKline.
