What is summarizing?• Summarizing is when larger

selections of text are reduced to their bare essentials: the gist, the key ideas, and the main points that are worth noting and remembering.

• Webster's calls a summary the "general idea in brief form"; it is the distillation, condensation, or reduction of a larger work into its primary notions.

What is summarizing?• Summarizing is a

metacognotive means of monitoring, through which students can evaluate their understanding of a passage that they have just read.

How to summarize?First, the reader must read content, and interpret the content into his or her own understanding.

The reader must look for the most important ideas within the content.

Lastly, the reader must put all of the main ideas together in a logical order.

Example of SummarizingJerry could not wait until school got out for the weekend. This weekend he was going camping with his dad. Jerry could already feel the campfire’s warmth and taste the s’mores.
