Director’s Letter

Summer Fenn stands out amongst the rest because of the mature and professional caliber of our staff. Being a mother of two children I understand the importance of a community filled with caring, mature, responsible adults who are eager to engage and enrich children’s lives. The staff that we hire to work at SFDC are just that. They are teachers in local public and private schools, experienced artists, outdoor educators, Nature’s Classroom instructors, theatre directors, athletes and coaches. We also hire the most mature college students that are studying education as well as recreation. These folks are the core of what makes Summer Fenn stand out!

Summer Fenn creates a non-competitive environment where campers can take it easy and enjoy their camp day without the stress of “being good at it” or getting everything done in one day! Our General Camp program for ages 5-15 (pages 3-5) offers campers a wide variety of elective choices, as well as Red Cross swim lessons, Adventure, Crafts, Sports & Games, and Nature. We offer over 20 different Special Programs (page 7-10) that range from theatre arts to fine arts, from robotics to athletics. We also offer two types of schedules within our Day Tripper Adventure Program (page 12), in which campers go off site each day to a wide variety of fun places around New England! In short, we offer a stimulating, challenging and enjoyable summer program that enriches the whole child!

Summer Fenn is the day camp where your camper will want to spend their summer vacation!

Sincerely,

The Summer Fenn Wayour PhiLosoPhy: ensuring everyone has a fantastic experience!

At Summer Fenn, we are committed to guiding and celebrating our campers as they make choices about how to participate in our many programs. We challenge each camper to take responsibility for his or her own actions and attitudes, making the experience a positive one for everyone. The Summer Fenn Way is about seeking out ways to treat each other well and helping to make someone else’s day better. This is the essence of the Summer Fenn Way and it guides everything we do.

In practice, the Summer Fenn Way is about the acceptance of others. It helps to ensure a safe and comfortable experience with no bullying or put-downs. It means being flexible enough to adjust challenges for each individual, so everyone can participate fully while being supported to stretch just a little further.

Our dedicated staff is focused on making Summer Fenn an experience to cherish for a lifetime.

General camp Programs

For GirLs anD boys aGes 5 – 15

Our General Camp program provides campers ages 5-15 with the opportunity to experience a variety of active, creative and fun activities under the guidance of our talented staff. It allows campers to build self-confidence, create lasting friendships, and make their own choices in a safe and supportive environment.

General Camp counselors lead campers through a well-paced and diverse schedule, getting to know their campers individually and as a group. They assist campers in all of our program areas, helping to ensure that each camper has a positive experience along the way. Our experienced Activity Specialists join groups to lead our program areas, engaging campers with thoughtful, age-appropriate activities and projects and allow-ing each camper to be successful and to participate at a comfortable level.

General Camp is offered all eight weeks of Summer Fenn in either one- or two-week sessions. The schedule and activities change weekly to encourage campers to join us for multiple weeks. Campers are placed in co-ed groups based on their age and the grade they will be entering the following fall. All General Campers participate in Friday Special Events and in our Elective Program (see pages 2 and 6).

LoWer Camp entering grades K – 1The Lower Camp program at Summer Fenn is an excellent experience for campers entering kindergarten and first grade.

Our unique Kindergarten program fosters a nurturing environment in which your camper will thrive. Our highly qualified staff works closely with these young campers in their small groups of 10 or fewer campers. With a staff-to-camper ratio of 1:3, our staff can be responsive to each camper’s individual needs while helping them all to be successful within their group. Campers are gently guided through a well-rounded and flexible schedule allowing them to experience a wide variety of activities at an age-appropriate pace.

Campers entering first grade benefit from our staff-to-camper ratio of 1:4 in their small groups of 12-16 campers. Our staff engages campers by helping them to connect with others, gain confidence and explore new and exciting opportunities in a varied and well-paced schedule.

As a part of their schedule, first grade campers are introduced to individual choice, which is an integral part of the Summer Fenn experience. Throughout the week counselors offer a variety of elective options that are created with the needs and interests of this younger age group in mind. They work closely with campers helping to guide them as they make positive choices about how to participate fully at a level they will enjoy. By maintaining a high level of flexibility we ensure that campers have fun and are successful. Sample elective choices: Music, Water Slide, Soccer, Clay, Scavenger Hunts and Nature Walks.

All Lower Campers participate in age-appropriate activities with our experienced Activity Specialists as they rotate through our Arts and Crafts, Nature, Sports and Games and Adventure Programs. Their weekly schedule also includes Red Cross Swim Lessons and they benefit from the close supervision and guidance of our qualified Water Safety Instructors.

“ Summer Fenn is very well organized and is the best possible place for our daughter to spend her summers!”

middLe Camp entering grades 2 – 3The Middle Camp experience at Summer Fenn is incredibly well-rounded, providing campers with an excellent balance of fun and engaging activities. With a staff to camper ratio of 1:5 including Activity Specialists, our exceptional counselors guide their groups through their daily schedule, at a comfortable pace.

During Swim Lessons, campers are placed in appropriate levels where they can develop and improve on their swimming abilities. In Adventure, they build self-confidence while engaging in activities that range from teambuilding on our low ropes course to the challenges of our Climbing Tower. Campers awaken their sense of curiosity and discovery as they take part in hands-on Nature activities and they can be individually creative in our Arts and Crafts program. In Sports and Games they have the opportunity to be active in an environment that combines fun with fairness. As they grow in General Camp, Middle Campers are provided with more choice in how to participate in their increased afternoon Elective options.

upper Camp entering grades 4 – 6Upper Campers have more flexibility and choice in deciding how to participate in the increasing variety of activities offered throughout their week. Our outstanding counselors travel with their groups throughout their daily schedule and Activity Specialists offer these campers high-end and age-appropriate programming.

As campers rise into Upper Camp, Archery is added to their weekly schedule and their Elective choices become wide and varied, allowing them to tailor their own Summer Fenn experience. Swim Lessons help these older campers to develop their strokes further and enhance their abilities in the water. Our Adventure program provides increased individual and teambuilding challenges, sending campers to new heights as they progress from our Low Ropes course to climbing and soaring on our High Ropes elements, Climbing Wall and Zipline. In Arts and Crafts they have the opportunity to get involved in more intricate projects, they participate actively and at their own comfort level during Sports and Games and they explore new elements of the natural world and interesting aspects of science through Nature activities.

Visit the Summer Fenn website, www.summerfenn.org, to view a sample schedule for your camper.

“ Summer Fenn is amazing, with its attention to detail and organization. The focus is completely on the campers and our children thrive there!”

Senior Camp entering grades 7 – 9Senior Camp is the capstone of the Summer Fenn General Camp experience, providing our oldest campers with the most choice we have to offer while simultaneously meeting their changing needs and keeping their camp experience fun and engaging. Their schedule features Choice Blocks, in addition to our already well-balanced program activities and Electives, allowing these campers the flexibility to engage in even more activities that foster their individuality and independence. Swim Lessons include elements of the American Red Cross Guard Start program and also help campers to refine their strokes and skills. The importance for this age group to build positive peer relationships is optimized through teambuilding in our Adventure program where they are challenged to grow both on the ground and in the air. Senior Campers have fun and stay active in Sports and Games, create choice-based projects in Arts and Crafts, and enjoy cool, new activities with our Nature staff. As our oldest General Campers, they also enjoy an off-campus field trip one day a week to places such as: Kimball’s Farm, Breezy Point and Wingaersheek Beach.
