firmly focused on the future A model of openness

Both an engineering school and reference centre for research, INSA Lyon is founded on the humanist values which have formed the bedrock of its model for over 50 years.

Half a century ahead

Creation : 19661,600 students

The INSA Group is made up of five INSA establishments in the regional cities of Lyon, Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg and

Toulouse. The five INSA share a federal structure and a common philosophy whilst each establishment maintains

its individual identity based on its own history, origins and economic environ-ment. The INSA Group represents the

largest grouping of engineering courses in France, each year almost 10% of all

engineering graduates graduate from an INSA establishment.

At present, over 62,000 INSA engineers (32,000 from Lyon) form an integral part

of the international socio-professional fabric. State establishments of a scien-

tific, cultural and professional nature, under the authority of the Ministry of

Higher Education, the INSA are autho-rised to confer engineering degrees by

the French Titles Commission.

created in 1957 by the philosopher Gaston Berger and the dean Jean capelle, insA lyon is the oldest and largest of the five insA Group establishments. insA engi-neers know how to develop their careers thanks to their excellent adaptability, a pioneering approach to science and tech-nology and genuine social responsibility.these defining characteristics still today reflect the values of its two founders.

from them insA has inherited its humanist commitment and its model of openness to all differences, origins, cultures and social classes. they also inspired the democra-tisation of the engineering profession and made sustainable development a central preoccupation, well before this was fashio-nable.

≥ The LyonTech Campus

Home to INSA Lyon, the LyonTech campus is looking to become an international reference in terms of Cleantech, by building on the site’s two fields of excellence: Chemistry and Engineering. The cornerstone of the project is the reorganisation of the campus into five scientific zones: Chemistry, Engineering, Biology and Environment, Physics and Nanotechnologies and Information Sciences and Technology. The creation of a Materials Institute, working at the interface of Chemistry and Engineering has consolidated the Rhône-Alpes region’s international strategic positioning in this field. This opening-up to the economic sector will be furthered by the creation of an innovation centre, a collaborative project centre, an experimentation building and new structures to house new businesses. The project also seeks to rethink the campuses of the future as living spaces for their users: teachers, researchers, administrative and technical staff and students. *the université de lyon is a centre for research

and higher education (Pres) a public-sector establishment for scientific cooperation grouping 19 establishments in lyon and saint-etienne.

An educational project based on business realities

focusing on AreAs for collAborAtion which correspond to businesses’ objectives

Entrepreneurship: a second nature

An Engineering and Enterpreneurship course

insA lyon has sought from the outset to harmonise its educational programmes with the realities of the business world. Businesses have a hand in developing our courses and updating their content. through the various work and industrial placements the engineering students undertake throughout their studies, businesses participate in training high- potential future professionals, able to adapt and develop as decision-makers in increasingly complex and multicultural environments.

As a stakeholder in sustainable economic development, insA lyon actively encourages entrepreneurship. created in 2000, the engineering and entrepreneurship course encourages students as of their 5th year of studies to understand the specificities of setting up and running a business. this course offers students a six-month training programme during which they learn how to use concrete management, marketing, communication, legal and

administrative tools to ensure the success of projects undertaken. since its launch more than 200 engineers have taken the course leading to 27 businesses being set up or taken over. the model has been exported to mexico where it is used at two of the country’s largest universities, the mexico national Polytechnic institute and the Autonomous university of nuevo leon de monterrey.

≥ Work placements and professional integrationThe « Espace Avenir Ingénieurs » offers a range of services to help with professional development:• Offers of work placements, graduate jobs, and International Business Volunteer positions...• Research into businesses, the engineering profession, work placements, graduate employment, the job

market in France and abroad, etc. This resource centre is open to all INSA Lyon’s engineering students and staff.

The foundation has been created for a renewable five-year period and is intended to support the development of INSA Lyon in four main areas:

• Building the future by integrating training and research for the benefit of engineering students, business and socio-economic stakeholders.

• Promoting the integration of culture, science and social issues into engineering courses. Welcoming, supporting and integrating diverse populations from a variety of backgrounds and cultures as part of the founding values that make up INSA Lyon’s philosophy.

• Pooling the strengths of the 6 multi-disciplinary research units to tackle environmental issues, notably in relation to sustainable building and habitats, to help businesses combine both economic growth and sustainable development.

• Creating a campus that is attractive in terms of its environmental and architectural features and the services offered to students.

diversity, A Priority Policy for insA lyon

in 2009 insA lyon decided to make use of the multidisciplinary competence of a Diversity and Success Centre in order to ensure both social equality and success for its students. the laboratory of excellence is home to a team of researchers working at the inter-face of human and engineering sciences and aims to pursue innovation along five lines:- encouraging vocations and instilling

ambition;

- expanding recruitment and broadening social horizons;

- encouraging personal development;- guaranteeing quality learning throughout

a person’s studies; - promoting professional inclusion in

liaision with businesses and local au-thorities.

≥ 1 INSA student in 3 is a woman

1/3 of INSA Lyon’s engineering students are female, 8% above the national average

for Grandes Ecoles (France’s top higher education establishments). This is not

just down to chance but is the result of awareness-raising work carried out with

qualified partners such as the Win France association, a network of women working

in the fields of nuclear power and its applications (energy, space, medecine,

art, biology) and the educational program Companieros, which brings together

female students and large companies to discuss the concept of “the feminine

touch” in engineering.

Social awareness

> Corporate soCial responsibility

A major stakeholder in the economic life of the region, as an employer insA lyon bases its human resources policy on a dynamic approach to social development. A discrimination prevention guide was published in 2008, in partnership with employers in the rhône-Alpes region. the institute has also launched concrete initiatives to support people in disabling situations whether in terms of recruit-ment, the accessibility of buildings and work spaces or service provision contracts signed with specific structures for the professional inclusion of people with disa-bilities.

A responsible employer

Positioned from the outset as a driving force for upward social mobility, INSA Lyon considers diversity as an opportunity to enhance the courses it offers and its students’ professional and social skills.

≥ Welcoming the disabledWelcoming, supporting and ensuring the professional inclusion of disabled people is a key concern for all INSA Lyon staff members and students. In 2008, the institute allocated €560k to refitting buildings and providing educational support. The school’s internet and intranet sites meet the W3C / WAI (World Wide Web Consortium / Web Accessibility Initiative) accessibility stan-dards and thereby fully meet the requirements for public sites as set out in French legislation.

researchers providing concrete solutions to environmental protection issues, the integration of corporate social responsi-bility concepts into the curriculum, the extensive mobilisation of students and staff in order to raise awareness amongst different groups of people within the establishment and the promotion of responsible actions… insA lyon has just passed its second iso 14 001 renewal audit with flying colours.

this is the result of the establishment’s continued and collective commitment to exemplarity. it also demonstrates the success of the catalysing role played by the sustainable development ambassadors. this original network was set up by the student association objectif 21 and then extended to staff members, with the aim of spreading and promoting the institute’s awareness-raising and prevention actions.

≥ Admissions: A variety of channels

First-year admissions are the perfect illustration of an establishment that is open to difference: The egalitarian recruitment process based on each candidate’s application file means the best students are admitted regardless of where they have studied. In addition there is an admissions process for students taking a technical baccalaureat (STI-STL), adapted support for students on grants, and specific programmes such as the “Interview Passport” programme for secondary schools in priority education zones (ZEP), as well as a wide international scope with international courses offered from the very first year of study.

INSA Lyon is also working to diversify third-year admissions by opening recruitment to students having followed other courses at French or international higher education establishments.

Applied and technical engineering sciences

humanities + Projects + Practicals

A leader as regards its scientific teaching, and a pioneer in terms of accessibility and diversity, over half a century after its creation, insA lyon is still an outstanding exception. for example, it is one of very few engineering schools to offer a high level sports section (sshn) accredited by the french ministry of sport.

over 4,500 engineering students have passed through this pool of talent in the last 30 years and around 20 have participated in the olympic Games*: students with qualities – determina-tion, a taste for a challenge, a com-petitive spirit, resilience, organisation etc. – that are as vital to sporting success as they are to professional success.

in addition to its excellence in the field of sports, the institute also shines on the cultural scene, offe-

ring courses unavailable at any other top higher education establishment. our Art-studies, dance-studies, music-studies and theatre-studies programmes allow almost 500 engineering students each year to give a free rein to their creativity whilst working towards an engineering degree.

≥ The Humanities Centre creation, INSA Lyon has also placed great importance on the humanities in order to produce engineers who

are open to the world around them. In addition to classes in languages, philosophy and culture, engineering

students can take courses in business and management studies

(covering finance, marketing, Human Resources management etc.).

These courses include discussions on ethics and use innovative and active

pedagogical approaches which aim to ensure students learn independence,

responsibility and citizenship and to encourage creativity and innovation.

open-minded, open to talent and open to the world. that in short is the credo of insA lyon, an establishment that crosses both cultural and geographical borders. international partnerships with 230 uni-versities located across the five continents, support for international mobility, and networks of excellence.

With 30% of its students of international origins representing 100 different natio-nalities, each year group has a multicul-tural profile unique amongst france’s top engineering schools.

At insA lyon 78% of engineering students spend at least six months abroad.

several specific programmes have been set up in which french and foreign stu-dents work together from the very first year of their studies. for over ten years, ASINSA’s year groups have been made up of 50% french and 50% Asian engineering students. EURINSA takes in 1/3 french and 2/3 european students and AMERINSA 50% of latin-American students. the SCAN programme also allows french and english-speaking engineering students to take classes for their first two years of studies in english. the GRAL programme offers the same option in German as of the second year.

International development has been a strategic priority for INSA Lyon since its creation.

in the 21st century engineers must have an international dimension to their background based on language skills, negotiation and working in multicultural teams to steer innovative technological projects in a geopolitical and social environment that is both complex and constantly changing. The institute’s international policy revolves around two major aims: To improve the quality of international mobility and encourage strategic national and international alliances.

the implementation of international partnerships with a heavy emphasis on research, often coupled with education, is a key area for development and exchange, as demonstrated by the recent creation of the international Associated laboratories (liA) in partnership with the cnrs, the ecole centrale de lyon and the university of lyon 1:• The Nanotechnologies and Nanosys-

tems Laboratory (ln2) dedicated to

nanotechnologies with the university of sherbrooke in Quebec (July 2008).
