PRODUCTOPERATION

The importance of the installationof your Sub-Zero cannot be over-emphasized. The proper in-stallation of your unit is theresponsibility of the selling dealeror installer. Any questions orproblems pertaining to the installationshould be directed to the sellingdealer.

TEM; ERATURECONTROLS

Your new refrigerator/freezer wasthoroughly inspected and testedbefore it was shipped from theSub-Zero factory. During theseprocedures, the temperatureswere preset to maintain approxi-mately 38 degrees in the refrigera-tor section and approximately 0degrees in the freezer section. Ifyou wish to adjust the temperature,simply turn the control dial. Theilluminated dial indicates thecontrol setting, #1 warmest to #10coldest. See Figures 1,2, and 3.

You should be aware it is normalfor temperatures to fluctuateslightly depending on externalinfluences, such as: an open doorfor extended periods, the degreeof humidity present and roomtemperature.

MODELS 532, 542 AND 561

The refrigerator control is locatedon the back wall of the refrigeratornear the top right. See Figure 1.

The freezer control is located onthe freezer panel just above the icedrawer. To adjust, pull the drawerout, on the left side of the panelturn the control dial until thedesired setting appears on thepanel. See Figure 2.

The refrigerator and freezercontrols are both located on theback wall of the refrigerator nearthe top. The refrigerator control ison the right and the freezercontrol is on the left. See Figure 1.

MODELS 501F AND 501R

The temperature control for eachmodel is located on the back wallof the unit near the top right. SeeFigure 1.

MODEL 590

The refrigerator and freezer con-trols are both located inside therefrigerator section on the left handside at a convenient level. SeeFigure 3.

CRISPER DRAWERS

To remove your crisper drawer,pull open until drawer stops. Raisefront of crisper and pull out asshown in Figure 4. To reinstall:With the front of the crisper raised,insert crisper into the tracks. SeeFigure 4.

HUMIDITY CONTROL

The humidity level in each crispermay be controlled for the storageof meats, fruits or vegetables, (See"Food Storage Suggestions," (Seepages 17 and 18). Adjust the slideon the front, to the left for higherhumidity, or to the right for lowerhumidity. See Figure 5.

ADJUSTABLESHELVES

To remove or adjust shelves,tiltthe shelf up at the front, then liftup and out of tracks on rear wall ofrefrigerator or freezer as shown inFigure 6. Note: If door is onlyallowed to open 90 °, in order toclear door shelves, lift and tilt rightend of shelf up and left end down,

_and lift out clearing door shelves ....Caution should be exercisedwhe_:handling refrigeratorglass shelves to preventbreakage or scratching ofinterior. To replace shelves:Select desired shelf height. Withshelf front raised slightly, insertshelf in tracks at rear of unit. Thenlower front of shelf until it locks intoposition.

ROLL-OUTREFRIGERATORBASKET

This basket rolls in and out for easyaccess to small containers andfood items.

To remove: Pull basket out, lift upon the front and then out as shownin Figure 7 below. Note: If door is

only allowed to open 90 ° , thenentire basket and shelf must beremoved as one unit in order toclear door shelves. Todo this, placeone hand palm up under the roll outrefrigerator basket and lift out of thesupport track. Tilt right end upwardand remove clearing door shelves.To replace: With the front of thebasket raised, insert the basketroller into tracks and push in.

DOOR SHELVESAND DAIRYCOMPARTMENT

The door shelves and dairyassembly are adjustable within theguides of the door liner. SeeFigure 8.

To remove: Lift straight up and out-from the bottom. Toreinstall:Select desired position and pushdown into guides.

FREEZER DRAWERREMOVAL

MODELS 511 AND 550

The freezer drawer will stop beforecoming all the way out of the unit.Lift up evenly on each side of thedrawer, while holding the topbasket in place and pull out. Thedrawer and basket will come outtogether as in Figure 9.

I_CAUTION IIMPORTANT." Unload the drawerbefore removing. CAUTIONshould be taken whenremoving the drawer, keepingyour feet clear from under thedrawer.

MODELS 532, 542, 561 AND 590

To remove: Pull open until drawerstops. Raise front of drawer andpull out. Note: If door is onlyallowed to open 90 o, in order toclear door shelves, we

recommend the followingprocedure. Pull ice drawer out untilit stops. Lift back of ice drawer up,clearing carrier assembly. Pivotingthe right side of ice drawer towardyou, lift ice drawer out. Removethe remaining drawers insequence by lifting up and out inthe Same manner, tilting upsharply as soon as the rollers leavethe tracks. (If drawer sticks duringremoval, lifting up will disengagethe rollers). To reinstall: Reverseprocedure. Note: To replace theice drawer, make sure the whitecarrier assembly is pulledcompletely forward and hang theback lip of the drawer on the top ofthe carrier assembly.

MODEL 501F

To remove: Pull open until drawerstops, raise front of drawer andpull up and out.

To reinstall: Reverse procedure.

DOOR CLOSING

MODELS 532, 542, 561, 501F,501R AND 590

Refrigerator and freezer doors areboth equipped with a springloaded door closure-mechanism.As the doors are closed, the doorclosure engages to assist in theclosing and sealing of the doors.

MODEL 550 AND 511

Refrigerator door: Yourrefrigerator door is equipped witha door closing cam to assist in theclosing of the door. With the dooropened to approximately 120° thecam will hold in the open positionif the door is stopped. If the doorcontinues to swing open, have theunit checked for proper levelingby your installer or dealer.As you close the door, the cam willtake over at approximately the 15°position and assist in the doorclosing.

Freezer drawer: The freezerdrawer is equipped with a self-closing mechanism. The incline,built into the roller assemblies onthe basket, uses gravity to assist inthe drawer closing.

FAN MOTOROPERATION

All units have one fan behind thegrille to cool the compressorarea. l"Bis fan runs with eithercompressor.

ICEMAKEROPERATION

The icemaker in your Sub-Zero isfully automatic and has been fac-tory pre-tested. To put into opera-tion it requires only a connection tothe house water supply.

MODELS 501F, 511 AND 550

The icemaker is shut off when thecontainer is removed from thefreezer basket. Replace the icecontainer and ice production isrestored. For Models 511 and 550see Figure 10 and for Model 501Fsee Figure 11.

The icemaker may be turned offand on by the switch on the front ofthe freezer control panel. SeeFigure 12.

To remove the ice drawer forModels 532, 542 and 561: Pullit out until it stops and lift back ofice drawer up clearing carrierassembly, and lift ice drawer out.Note: Ifdoor is only allowed to open90 °, repeat above procedure, butwhen lifting ice drawer out, pivotright side of ice drawer toward youand out. This will allow drawer toclear the door.

MODEL 590WATER DISPENSER

This automatic water and ice dis-pensing product offers the conve-nience of dispensing both chilledwater and ice from the productwithout having to open the doors.See Figure 13.

The water dispenser operatesas follows: To operate the waterdispenser, the water dispenserswitch must be depressedcontinuously for the requiredamount. This switch is located onthe refrigerator door glasswell. SeeFigure 13. The very first time thewater dispenser is operated, it willbe necessary to flush and purgethe water system and waterstorage tank for three minutes.This procedure will clear out anyair in the system a_swell as anyforeign material that occl,Lr.swithanew plumbing connection in thehome.

The chilled water container ismounted inside the refrigeratorsection. It will take several hours tochill the water to the refrigeratortemperature upon the original fill orif a significant amount of water is

MODEL 590ICE DISPENSER

The ice dispenser operates asfollows: Tooperate the ice dis-penser, the ice dispenser switchmust be depressed continuouslyfor the required amount. Thisswitch is located on the refrigeratordoor glasswell. See Figure 13.

After original start-up of the ice-maker operation, it will be neces-sary to discard the first few batchesof ice as they may be discoloreddue to the new plumbing connec-tion to the home.

The ice dispenser feature candeliver ice in two different ways:(1) By inserting a glass into theglasswell and then depressing theice dispenser switch as in Figure13, ice cubes will automaticallydispense into the glass. (2) If alarger quantity of ice is required,open up the refrigerator door, posi-tion an ice container underneaththe ice dispenser chute and thendepress the button for bulk icedispensing. See Figure 14.

Do not use a fragile glass as theice crescents dropping into theglass from the ice dispensermay break this type of glass.

MODEL 590ICE DISPENSEROPERATING TIPS

1) If no ice, is the ice systemswitch on? See Figure 18.

2) Make sure there isa supply ofice instorage container. See"Ice Storage Container"page 12.

3) Make sure storage container isall the way into insureproperengagement of auger motor toback of container. If ice con-tainer is notall the way back,push oncontainer and icedispenser switch at the sametime to properly engage.

4) Make sure freezer utility rackisproperly installed asthisinsuresproper ice storagecontainer positioning. See"Freezer Utility Rack"page 12.

5) Press ice dispenser switc,-h. Ifno auger motor noise is heard,wait 5 minutes and try again.On second try if no augermotor noise is heard, callyour local Factory AuthorizedService Agency.

6) If the icedispenser is not usedfor an extended period, the icewill tend to fuse together. It willbe necessary to discard oldice.

MODEL 590FREEZER UTILITY RACK

The freezer utility rack is specifi-cally designed to accommodateand hold freezer juice containers.For the removal of the freezer utilityrack, lift up and pull out atthe bot-tom with one hand and then sup-port the top with the other hand asin Figure 15.

MODEL 590ICE STORAGE CONTAINER

The ice storage container holdsan ample supply of ice forthe average family's dailyconsumption.

The ice storage container can beremoved for discarding unused iceor for general cleaning purposes.

To access the ice storage con-tainer, the freezer utility rack mustbe first removed. See Figure 15. Toremove t_e ice storage container,lift up on the ice container handleand pull out having the bottom ofthe ice storage container sup-ported with the other hand asshown in Figure 16.

MODEL 590LIGHT BULB AND LIGHTSWITCH IN DISPENSER UNIT

The door dispenser light switch islocated inthe upper left handportion of the water and icedispenser glasswell. Depress thelight switch to turn the dispensinglight on and off. NOTE: In the offmode the light will activate wheneither the water or ice switch isdepressed. The light bulb caneasily be replaced with a 7 wattappliance bulb. See Figure 17.NO TE: Dispenser light will re.main on for 5 seconds afterdispenser switch is released.

MODEL 590DISPENSER SPILL TRAY

At the bottom of the water and icedispenser, there is a spill tray as-sembly. This tray will catch andevaporate small spills. NOTE:There is no drain in this area;therefore do not pour waterinto the spill tray. See Figure 17.To clean this area, depress thefront left corner of the spill plate andit can easily be removed.

MODEL 590ICEMAKER SWITCH

This switch is located in the refrig-erator section on the right handside of the Control Panel As-sembly. See Figure 18. NOTE:When the switch is on, the ice-maker system light will be illumi-nated. See Figure 18. The designof this sw_ch is to allow the icema-ker and ice dispenser to be shut offfor extended _cation periods.During these vacation periods, werecommend the icemaker switch beturned off. Then the ice storagecontainer can be removed, emptiedand returned to its location. SeeFigure 16. This prevents the unusedice, over a period of time, fromshrinking and sticking together,possibly causing a'no ice" situation.

ICE PRODUCTIONALL MODELS

The level of ice in the ice containersis controlled by an ice level arm.When the containers are filled withice the ice level arm senses thelevel and shuts down the icemaker.As ice is used, the level drops andthe level arm signals the icemakerto restore ice production.

These icemakers are designedto produce an adequatesupply of ice for normal familyconsumption. The length of timebetween ice harvest cycles willvary depending on load condi-tions, door openings and ambientroom temperatures. On theaverage, you can expect a harvestof ice every 2 hours.

If ice is not used regularly it willtend to fuse together. Te..avoidthis,empty the ice container'periodically.

AUTOMATICDEFROST

For your convenience your Sub-Zero unit is equipped with an auto-matic defrost system. Therefrigerator section will defrost

during each off cycle of the refrig-erator. The freezer section is con-trolled by a timer which defrosts asneeded.

MASTER POWERSWITCHMODEL 590

The Model 590 features a MasterPower Switch. This switch, which islocated behind the top grille, willturn off all electrical power to theequipment. See Figure 19. Thiseliminates having to shut power offat the circuit breaker or having topull the power plug from the wallreceptacle. This switch can beused for either shutting down theequipment for servicing or duringextended vacations.

In order to access this switch, thefront inner grille panel assemblymust be first removed (refer topanellized grille removal instruc-tions on Page 14, Figure 23).

SOUNDS

Certain noises may be evident withthe normal operation of the unit.Surrounding acoustics like walls,floors and cabinets may affect thesound level of your unit.

A gurgling sound or running watersound may be evident as the refri-gerant circulates through thetubing.

In Model 590, the ice dispenservalve within the refrigerator doorsnaps closed 5 seconds aftereither the water or ice dispenserswitch is released.

During the icemaker cycle you mayhear the sound of ice dropping intothe container or of the solenoidvalve while refilling the icemakerwith water.

During the freezer defrost you mayhear crackling and/or sizzling asthe heat from the defrost elementclears the frost from the freezer coiland water runs into the defrostwater pan.

While the compressors are inoperation a slight hum may beevident. During the startup andshutdown of the compressor,some vibration may occur lasting .only a few seconds.

MAINTENANCE ANDCLEANING

IACAUTION JWe recommend for main-tenance and cleaning, that thecircuit breaker or master powerswitch if applicable to the re-frigerator be shut off and pro-tective gloves (when cleaningthe condenser) be worn.

CONDENSER:To insurepro_e rperformance, the cleaning of yourunit's condenser is required. Thisshould be performed every 3 to 6months under normal use. Toclean, remove grille. See page 14.

Remove center grille screw. Tilt thegrille forward at the top andrelease the spring(s) from behindthe grille and lift off. See Figure 20.Toreinstall: reverse procedure.

CLEANING PROCEDURE

Use "soft" bristle brush andvacuum hose to remove theaccumulation of dust and lintparticles on the condenser(radiators). See Figure 23 forModels 511,532, 542, 561,550and 590. See Figure 24 forModels 501F and 501R

CLEANING OUT THE ICECHUTE MODEL 590

On occasion, ice crescents maybecome lodged in the ice chute.The ice chute is a clear plastichousing that directs ice from thefreezer section's ice storage con-tainer to the refrigerator door icedispenser. This may prevent theicemaker from supplying ice toeither the ice dispenser or the bulkice dispenser. We have made avail-able access to the ice chute toallow a convenient way to unblockany obstructions.

The ice chute is located behind thefreezer control panel, mounted tothe left hand side of-refrigerator.The side panel is removed byholding the bottom of the"_idepanel and pushing rearward, then

pulling out as in Figure 25. Oncethe panel is removed, the clearplastic ice chute will be visible aswell as any obstruction.

To remove the side cover of the icechute, depress the two sidelocking tabs, then pull up and out.See Figure 26.

To reinstall, make sure the bottomsection of the ice chute is installedfirst; the outside front cover lip fitsinside the stationary portion. Thenpush the two assemblies togetherand secure the self-locking tabsclosed.

LIGHTINGINFORMATION

IMPORTANT." When therefrigerator doors (all models)or freezer doors (501F, 532, 542,561 and 590) are left open foran extended period of time, thelights may go off. This designprotects the internal parts fromoverheating. To reset the lightswitch, close the door(s)for approximately 15 to 30minutes.

For your safety, the circuitbreaker to the refrigeratorshould be shut off (or on Model590, the master power switch isturned off, see page 13) beforereplacing bulbs. Protectivegloves should be worn whenhandling light bulbs (40 wattmaximum).

REFRIGERATOR LIGHTING

The light shield in the top of therefrigerator must be removedto replace the light bulbs. Todoso: Place your hands on the backedge of the shield and pull towardsyou to release (this shield may havea snug fit). Drop the front edgeof the shield out of the channel andremove. The light bulbs are nowaccessible. Toreinstall: Engagefront edge of shield into channeland snap the back edge up intoposition. See Figure 27 onpage 16.

The freezer lighting is supplied bybulbs in the top of the freezer(Model 511 has one bulb, Model550 has two bulbs), mounted tothe front of the evaporator cover.The bulbs are accessible by open-ing the freezer drawer and un-screwing the bulb from the top ofthe freezer.

VACATION TIMEFor extended vacations: Thecontrol(s) to your refrigerator orfreezer should be turned off or thecircuit breaker can be shut off (onModel 590, the master powerswitch, Se_ page 13.) Empty allcontents in the refrigerator/freezer.BLOCK THE DOORS OPENSLIGHTLY WHEN THEUNIT IS NOT IN USE. Aboutone inch space will let fresh air in tokeep the interior dry.

For short vacations: Remove allperishable items. Shut off the ice-maker switch (see IcemakerOperation page 10) and dump theunused ice out of the ice container.Do not change the settings of yourcontrols.

VACANT HOMES

If for any reason this unit is put intoservice on a temporary basis, andlater shut off, the doors should beblocked open to allow fresh air tocirculate within the compartment.Also, the circuit breaker to therefrigerator or freezer should beshut off (on Model 590, the masterpower switch, see page 13).CAUTION: The moisturedeveloped during even theshortest amount of runningtime could attack the metal.
