Subsea Processing

Proven SolutionsIncreasingly, offshore oil and gas producers are applying subsea processing solutions to meet the challenges posed by aging fields and difficult to access reserves. As one of the first to deliver these solutions, FMC Technologies has proven that subsea processing has the ability to meet established availability and reliability performance levels while delivering financial value. FMC is the forerunner delivering subsea processing solutions having successfully installed systems in a broad range of Brownfield and Greenfield applications worldwide.

Systems ApproachDesigning equipment to operate reliably in the harsh and challenging conditions of subsea environments requires a full field approach that integrates products, components, and technologies into a total system. FMC Technologies brings together industry leading specialists and a broad portfolio of building blocks for separation, pumping, and compression to deliver complete solutions to maximize production and lower costs per barrel over the life of the field.

Subsea SeparationThe separation of liquid from gas, and water from oil while managing sand are a great benefit for subsea field developments resulting in increased production and improved recovery. FMC Technologies has the largest market share for commercial subsea separation with projects installed or commissioned in all the world’s major deepwater basins.

In Greenfield applications where there may be low energy reservoirs or reservoirs with poor rock or fluid properties, multiphase boosting combined with separation has been effective in enabling the recovery of stranded oil. Separating gas from liquids lowers wellhead pressures, allows higher efficiency pumping, minimizes flow assurance risks, and diminishes tieback distance limitations. Brownfield projects have benefitted from the application of produced water separation followed by disposal or injection. In addition to increased production and recovery, using this type of approach in mature fields can debottleneck host facilities, prevent drilling of in fill wells, and improve flow assurance.

Recognized as the leading provider of separation solutions, FMC’s Separation Systems has vast experience with all methods of separation including gravity-based and cyclonic. With a broad set of capabilities, FMC can deliver systems incorporating technology for primary separation, secondary separation, and final water polishing.

POWER MODULE Subsea Gas CompressionSubsea gas compression has matured as a field development solution due to its potential to increase recovery and enable longer transport distances. Systems can be installed in mature fields to extend plateau production or in Greenfield applications providing initial boosting support for remote fields with long tiebacks. As an approach to regain production rates in aging gas fields, subsea gas compression offers a cost effective alternative to boost the well-stream without the use of topside production facilities.

FMC’s industry leading expertise in process design, power systems, and controls provide a significant advantage for supplying robust systems that operate reliably throughout the life of the field. The company has also undertaken an extensive, in-house technology development program to qualify many of the core technologies required in gas compression. Combined with building blocks like permanent magnet technology from its Direct Drive Systems subsidiary, FMC is uniquely positioned to offer solutions that provide a step-change in cost savings, performance, and reliability.

Power & Control SystemsPowerDemands for power are influenced by transmission distances and the needs of different types of equipment including boosting stations, compressor stations, and separation systems. FMC Technologies has gained significant experience designing and integrating complete power systems from numerous delivery projects including Petrobras’ Cascade Chinook, Statoil’s Tordis, and Total’s Pazflor. FMC experts are well versed in addressing the technical challenges presented by the supply, transmission, and distribution of power in subsea environments.

Control SystemsSubsea processing systems place greater demands on control system technology requiring faster communications, more precise control, and sophisticated monitoring systems. FMC is a recognized leader providing high-speed control systems for subsea applications. Through its subsidiary Control Systems International (CSI), FMC has expanded its capabilities to provide advanced automation and control of subsea infrastructure. Combined, FMC and CSI capabilities represent a significant step forward for performing next-generation processing on the seabed. Gas Compression System

Subsea Pumping Subsea pumps have been operating in boosting and injection applications throughout the world as a method to boost flow rates, stimulate production, and increase total recoverable reserves. Leveraging its experience as a subsea systems integrator, FMC has developed a vast knowledge of pumping applications. With over 15 years experience supplying pump modules and boosting stations worldwide, FMC experts know how to apply the right technology to optimize the performance of the subsea system and deliver results.

In our quest to develop more reliable, higher performing, cost-effective pumping solutions, FMC Technologies works with industry leaders to break new ground with technology that is revolutionizing subsea pumping. Permanent magnet motor technology from FMC’s Direct Drive Systems (DDS) coupled with field-proven pump hydraulics from Sulzer Pumps Ltd. creates pump systems that exceeds traditional subsea pump capabilities. Utilizing permanent magnet motor technology provides higher speed, efficiency, and power, and requires less maintenance than traditional machinery. Collaborating with Sulzer Pumps Ltd., the world leader in pumping solutions, a full range of pump technology will be offered including multiphase, single phase and hybrid pumps.
