Senior Year Visit ARC:

ARC’s experienced tutors understand the pressures of a final semester. They are available to

explain course material, review chapters, practice formulas and answer your questions about

writing your course papers.

Stay SSSP-Connected:

It’s good to be in a familiar place because many changes are taking place. Keep attending

workshops and events to enrich your final semester. Enjoy the time with SSSP friends. Make the most out of connecting with others. Find out what their plans are and seek new

challenges for yourself. Stay connected and get inspired by others.

Contact CPDI (Jobs and Internships).

CCNY’s Career Development Professional Institute is located in NA 1/116. Make a special

point of returning to your career representative to discuss job and internship opportunities. This is a vulnerable time for the senior student. What happens next? What should you do

with your new freedom? If you are not pursuing graduate school, perhaps you want to jump

into a work experience? This will ease you into the next stage of your adult life. SSSP is still here for you. By the time you get to this stage, we will have engagement leaders availa-

ble to chat with you and assist in planning your life after the baccalaureate degree.

Join the College Network.

Network with faculty, alumni and program heads to stay in touch with jobs, internships or

scholarship opportunities. Participate in campus events that relate to your major.

Perform Midterm Review.

Meet with your professor and your SSSP counselor for a midterm check-in regarding your

academic progress. You will want to safeguard your grades to prepare the way for graduate

school.

Online Services.

Our online writing service is available for draft reviews. Email your term papers and receive

a comprehensive review. Be sure to identify your due date, as this service is in demand.

Attend Capstone Events.

We hope to see you at all these special events that recognize all your efforts so far. We

appreciate the challenges you’ve faced. The many visits to confirm progress and seek ad-

vice are an acknowledgement that you are a serious-minded student. Let us celebrate your

good work and wish you well.

Perform an Independent Check:

Plan your academic program plan for your final year. You will want to review your progress

of your major on Degree Works before taking steps to register for courses. This is the time

to ensure that all paperwork is in order to facilitate your graduation. It is important to clear-up any stops on your transcript. These stops may represent a library fine, advisor stop or

departmental stop and must be addressed. Discuss any queries you may have with your

advisors.

Seek out your SSSP Counselor:

As this is your last semester, a full graduation check is needed before you file for gradua-tion. Visit your SSSP counselor to review your completed degree program. This is an im-

portant procedure so don’t delay it.

Seek out your Major Advisor:

Visit your major advisor to sign off on your major sheet, confirming that you have, or will,

meet all requirements for your major by your last semester.

Seek out Departmental Degree Auditor:

Your degree documents should be housed in the department of your major for a final audit

check. Your departmental advisor will provide a major check, review your completion of the general education requirements, and ascertain whether you have met all degree rules as

outlined in the requirements of your major. It is important that all your documentation is

approved, signed and stored in your department reviewer’s folder before you file for gradua-

tion.

Prepare for Graduate School:

If you are planning on extending your studies in pursuit of a graduate degree, you’ll need to compile a list of the due dates, requirements and fees for each prospective school (they vary

widely). Some of the most competitive graduate programs will ask for applications by the

end of fall semester, and will favor early applicants. Develop your personal statements with the help of an SSSP counselor or the ARC coordinator, customizing each statement for a

specific college. You will also need to request letters of recommendation from faculty well in advance of the due dates. Prepare to take entrance exams as appropriate (GRE general test

(almost all programs), GRE subject tests, MCAT, LSAT, etc.). Inquire at ARC about gradu-

ate school test preparation.

File for Graduation:

Establish your official date of graduation. CCNY has three main graduation months: Febru-

ary, June and September. You will find all the relevant steps and forms to file for graduation

on the Registrar’s web site at http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/registrar/index.cfm.

Perform an Independent Check.

Plan your academic program for the next semester. First, re-view your progress with your

major on Degree Works. Identify questions & queries to discuss with your major and SSSP

advisor.

Visit Major Advisor and complete a Major Check.

Visit your major advisor before you register for courses. Your advisor will assess your grade

progress and make adjustments to your academic plan. It is important to take a cluster of

courses (elective and required) in a certain order, since participation in one may strengthen your progress in another. Don’t try to do all this on your own. Degree Works is a safe guide,

but conferring with an advisor is still key to planning ahead.

Visit an SSSP Counselor.

Visit your counselor to review your academic plan, confirm your core check, discuss plans for your future and find out about opportunities that are right for you. Together, you can

consider the possibilities of how you will utilize your strengths and aptitudes for a rewarding

professional and personal life. This is an important time to start thinking about securing your GPA. Students of strong academic standing can take advantage of CCNY’s scholarship

opportunities. For a list of available scholarships, consult the website. Go to

www.ccny.cuny.edu/admissions/scholarships-awards.cfm.

SSSP’s Academic Resource center should be a regular stop in your college rounds. Here you will find experienced tutors who understand the pressures of a third semester. They are avail-

able to explain course material, review chapters, practice formulas and answer your ques-

tions about writing your course papers. With each academic year, ARC tutors can adjust their tutorial sessions to meet new course demands. At SSSP, counselors and the coordinator are

thinking ahead about what tutorials you may need. Meet with the ARC coordinator to discuss

the possibility of joining a study or research group at ARC. You can be in a study group to review chapters or test questions. A trained tutor can be present to help guide a new group’s

study approach. SSSP’s conference room is available for group work. Contact our main

office at 6/148 for the schedule and the keys.

CCNY’s Career Development Professional Institute is located in NA 1/116. Join up and

meet a career representative and take their online training sessions. This center has an ex-

tensive internship database of employment opportunities.

Perform an Independent Check.

To monitor your academic progress and explore what-if major options, use Degree Works.

With Degree Works, you can observe your academic progress and receive warnings regard-ing major’s required courses. One caveat here is that it is always best to review requirements

with an advisor to ensure you are notified of any curriculum changes to your program.

Visit an SSSP Counselor.

Visit your counselor to review your academic plan, confirm the completion of your core

requirements, discuss plans for your future and find out about the opportunities that are right

for you. This is an important time to start thinking about securing your GPA. Students of

strong academic standing can take advantage of CCNY’s scholarship opportunities.

Visit a Major Advisor.

Having discussed your academic options with your SSSP counselor, it is time to meet your

major advisor. This advisor, like your SSSP counselor, will guide you for the duration of

your degree program at CCNY. Your major advisor will explain what you have to do to fulfill a particular major in terms of courses, credits, GPA and special topics. It is important

to have candid conversations with your advisors in terms of your aptitudes and interests.

Your future is not necessarily determined by the major you choose, but certainly a major is a formative path. You can also visit CPDI (NA 1/116) to take an aptitude test to determine the

likely professions for your individual capability.

Visit ARC.

SSSP’s Academic Resource Center should be a regular stop in your college rounds. Here

you will find experienced tutors who understand the pressures of a second semester. They

are available to explain course material, review chapters, practice formulas and answer your questions about writing your course papers. With each academic year, ARC tutors can adjust

their tutorial sessions to meet the next steps in course demands. At SSSP, counselors and the

coordinator are thinking ahead in terms of what tutorials you may need. Meet with the ARC

coordinator to discuss the possibility of joining a study or research group at ARC. You

can be in a study group to review chapters or review tests questions. A trained tutor can be present to help guide a new group’s study approach. SSSP’s conference room is also availa-

ble for group work. Contact our main office 6/148 for the schedule and the keys.

Freshman Year Establish a Schedule.

Plan a weekly schedule to include meetings, due dates, study times, homework times, exams

and downtime. Adjust the schedule if it is unmanageable. Remember, in college you are

expected to log extra hours for chapter reviews, paper drafts and blackboard responses.

When college professors give out assignments, they don’t check to see if three other profes-

sors gave you work for the same weekend. If you work ahead of due dates, you will be less

overwhelmed.

Set Grade Goals.

What grade will you work for? Every effort you make to familiarize yourself with course-

work is an investment towards your final grade. Professors may find you engaging but it is

your work that is graded. Remind yourself every day that doing well is a top priority. Tell

your SSSP counselor, professor and tutor about your goals. They will help you priori-

tize them.

Inspect the General Education Curriculum Requirements.

When it comes to the required core curriculum for your degree, you have many options.

Speak to your SSSP counselor to determine which options fit your long-term professional

plans. Use this link to view core checklists pertaining to your major: www.ccny.cuny.edu/

gened/general-educationchecklists.cf. Visit our handbook book for more information on the

core curriculum.

Perform an Independent Check.

To monitor your academic progress and explore what-if major options, use Degree Works. In

our handbook we include instructions and a reference link on how to use this database. With

Degree Works, you can observe your academic progress. Go have fun with the what-if fea-

ture of Degree Works. Use our quick-find CCNY bulletin academic guide of our handbook to

search online for descriptions of your major and elective courses.

Visit an SSSP Counselor.

Visit your counselor to review your academic program plan, perform a core check, discuss plans for your future and find out about opportunities that are right for you. Together, you

can consider how you will utilize your strengths and aptitudes for a rewarding professional

and personal life. This is an important time to start thinking about securing your GPA. Then you can take advantage of CCNY’s scholarship opportunities. Go to www.ccny.cuny.edu/

admissions/scholarships-awards.cfm.
