Adventures on your doorstepAlthough our campus community is friendly and welcoming, you’ll want to make the most of our local area too. Multicultural Whitechapel is home to markets, galleries and contemporary exhibitions. While Spitalfields Market and the fiery flavours and buzzing bars of Brick Lane are just around the corner. Wherever you go, you’ll stumble across up-and-coming fashion boutiques, independent art galleries, mouthwatering food markets – every study break is a mini-adventure.

Keeping happy and healthy If you enjoy sport, or would like to get more active, you’ll love living in London. From waterpolo, football, rugby, baseball to dodgeball, you can access some of the greatest sports clubs in the country. London was host to the 2012 Olympic Games, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park is just three tube stops from campus! Follow in the footsteps of Olympians at facilities including the Copper Box (host to handball, modern pentathlon, fencing and goalball in the Games), Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark and the London Aquatics Centre.

If you fancy something sporty right on our doorstep, join the football club and play on the 5-a-side pitches in Shoreditch. Closer still are our on-campus facilities: there’s a Fitness First gym right next door, plus table tennis tables for a fun break between seminars and lectures.

Undergraduate access support for home and EU students

We know that some students face extra challenges when applying to university. In some areas of the UK, going to university is unusual – and this can sometimes feel like a barrier for those who would like to study a degree. It might be that you’ve got loads of potential, but you’re worried that your family may not be able to support you financially. Whatever your background, whatever the barriers, if you want to aim higher, we’re here to help.

Our access schemes

Realising OpportunitiesNewcastle University leads this award-winning scheme, which aims to encourage talented students from across the UK to apply to research-intensive universities including Newcastle. Find out more at www.realisingopportunities.ac.uk.

PARTNERS – Receive a lower offer For students from England and Northern Ireland

Are you:

• From a family with a low income?

• First in your family to apply to university?

• In care (or have been in care)?

• A high achiever but worried about getting your grades?

• Not sure where to get information about university?

• Worried about applying because you don’t know anyone who’s at university and don’t know enough about it?

If you’re less likely to go to university because of your family background, low income or school opportunities, our nationally recognised PARTNERS programme can help. PARTNERS is a supported entry route to help talented applicants overcome barriers to applying here. So far, Newcastle University has supported over 4,000 students to enter the University who might otherwise not have done.

A PARTNERS offer from the University will be lower than the typical offer*. As part of the conditions of the offer you have to successfully complete the PARTNERS summer school in the July of Year 13. The summer school includes introductory sessions in the subject area of the course you have applied to and sessions to develop key transitional skills necessary for success at university.

You’ll also get: help with applying and understanding student finance; the chance to meet other students on the scheme; and to learn more about Newcastle University and student life here.

Check if you’re eligible to apply and find out more about PARTNERS at www.ncl.ac.uk/partners.

* Meaning the A-Level (or equivalent), grades we ask you for are lower than normal. For example BBB, instead of AAB.

The European Union ReferendumThe UK’s 2016 EU referendum returned a ‘leave’ vote and the process for the UK leaving the EU has begun. The UK is expected to leave the EU in 2019. While this decision will have some consequences, no major changes will take place immediately and EU students entering Newcastle University in 2018 will continue to pay the UK (home) rate of fees.

Research and Teaching

Ground-breaking research meets purpose

Cutting-edge research

Dr Natalia Yakovleva Senior Lecturer in International Business Strategy

Natalia is helping to reform the way certain industries are understood, in both academic literature and the business world, particularly in the context of responsible business practices. She is embarking on a project called Global and Urban Metabolism of Potassium to feed the City as a co-investigator with the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University.

Dr Rama Kanungo Lecturer in Accounting and Finance

Rama’s teaching approach reflects real-life job situations, with practical assignments including business simulations where students compete with those at the Newcastle campus. His research interests are in a range of areas, from mergers and acquisitions to financial theory and management to risk and portfolio analysis.
