Private SectorFor anyone preferring not to live on campus or in aUniversity-managed property, the private sector has agood choice of shared houses, flats and bedsits inwhich you have a room and share a kitchen, bathroomand sometimes a living room with other students. Theowners have agreed that their property can beincluded in the accommodation list available forstudents attending the University. Properties vary insize, and are located mostly in areas popular withstudents.

The University can help you make arrangements byproviding a list of private accommodation, which isavailable on the day of enquiry. The AccommodationOffice staff are also happy to discuss accommodationissues over the telephone. Prospective students canaccess the accommodation available in the privatesector via the Internet atwww.scarboroughstudentpad.co.uk. Studentpad is anexternal website designed to advertiseaccommodation to the student population. The site isupdated and maintained by the Accommodation Officeat the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus.Studentpad provides students with an easy, clear, transparent service.

Scarborough Campus Accreditation SchemeThe accreditation scheme ensures all landlords areadhering to the current Health and Fire Safetyregulations and raises the awareness of relatedlegislative requirements.

All properties that are advertised on the website havebeen inspected by Scaborough Borough Council’sEnvironmental Health Department and theAccommodation Office.

The aim of the scheme is to encourage good practiceamong private sector landlords who are lettingproperties to Scarborough students.

When renting any form of private sectoraccommodation, the student signs a contract with theowner/agent (normally for the full academic yearincluding the Christmas and Easter vacations) and is,therefore fully accountable to such owner/agent underthe law.

If a student has any doubt about the forms ofcontract, the Accommodation Office will try to assist, but students are free to take independent legaladvice.

No responsibility can be attached either to theUniversity or the Accommodation Office regardingsuch contracts or the suitability or safety of theaccommodation. It is, therefore, in your own intereststo come to Scarborough, view what is available, makeyour own checks and decisions as to the safety of theproperty, and meet your prospective landlord/lady todiscuss contracts.

PoliciesPolicy on the Allocation of Places

The University of Hull at Scarborough can currentlyprovide University owned or managedaccommodation for approximately 400 singlestudents: 213 in Cayley Halls of residence andapproximately 200 in University managed sharedstudent houses, plus a good selection of privatesector accommodation which is registered with theUniversity.

In Cayley Hall and managed accommodation placeswill be allocated with a mixture of male and femalestudents on all floors. Some of the smaller propertiesmay be designated for mature and/or postgraduatestudents.

Our accommodation is provided to benefit as manynew students as possible. Applicants for ourresidences need to be aware that they will be livingtogether as an integrated, tolerant and co-operativecommunity. Students who have cultural, religious, medical, dietary or other requirements need to make adecision before applying for a place in Universityaccommodation as to whether or not this mixedenvironment may pose difficulties for them. In self-catering accommodation some students’ diets andstores of foodstuffs are likely to include meat, including pork, and alcoholic drinks. Separatefridge/freezers, kitchen and dining areas are notavailable for residents preferring to operate inisolation from the general resident community.

Places in our accommodation are allocated inaccordance with the following list of priorities1. Students with disability2. New undergraduate students3. Continuing undergraduate students from overseas4. Postgraduate students from overseas5. Postgraduate students from within the UK6. Exchange students7. Continuing undergraduate students from the UK

1. Disabled students and those with declared andmedically certified health problems are given firstpriority. We have a policy of integrating studentswith a disability within our general studentcommunity.

Located on the main campus, Cayley Hall hasramped approaches and a number of ground floorpurpose-built easy access study bedrooms for

students with disabilities. The ‘DeafAlerter’system has been installed in Block ‘A’ and ‘B’.Students with mobility considerations are advisedto visit the campus to assess its suitability fortheir individual needs.

It is recommended that applicants with a disabilitycontact Rosemary Laidlaw, Disability SupportAdviser on 01723 357215 or [email protected] to discuss anyaccommodation needs. Making properarrangements at an early stage is very important.

Students with a disability who will requireUniversity accommodation are requested tocontact the Accommodation Office as soon as theyaccept an offer (firmly or provisionally) in orderthat the most appropriate accommodation can bereserved for them. Our contact number is 01723357349 / 357373 / 357245

2. The University of Hull Scarborough Campus has astock of residential places reserved to meet theneeds of virtually all newly arrivingunaccompanied undergraduates and mostinternational students, with the possibleexception of a few visiting students and some‘clearing’ candidates or very late applicants. In anormal year most applicants who qualify will beoffered accommodation (not necessarily in theirfirst choice of residence – this depends ondemand, which varies each year). On occasions, where demand exceeds supply, later applicantswill be directed to local guest houses which aremodestly priced by UK standards (charges payableby the individual) until vacancies are identified ineither University-owned accommodation, managed or directed accommodation (usuallywithin two weeks).

3. Undergraduate students from overseas – A stockof accommodation sufficient to meet the predictedneeds of all new and continuing unaccompaniedundergraduate students from overseas is reservedfor their use. Students admitted during the laterstages of our accommodation admissionsprocedure, after 1 September 2012, are advisedthat as time moves on, available options becomefewer and fewer until our stock is fully let. Ifdemand exceeds our capacity, those whom wecannot permanently accommodate on arrival will

Student living10

Page 13: Student Living Scarborough

Student living 11

be directed to local guest houses (charges payableby the individual) until permanent places arefound.

4. Postgraduate students from overseas – A smallnumber of rooms in University-managedaccommodation will be allocated to postgraduatestudents coming directly from overseas.Applications for places should be submitted to theAccommodation Office. To be considered forUniversity-managed accommodation you musthave an unconditional confirmed offer to studyhere at the University of Hull Scarborough Campusand the Accommodation Office must have receiveda completed accommodation application form andconfirmation of payment of your room depositbefore the 1 September 2012. Postgraduatestudents who cannot be offered accommodationwill be assisted to locate private sectoraccommodation.

5. Postgraduates from within the UK – The Universityhas limited accommodation available topostgraduates from within the UK. When allaccommodation has been allocated theAccommodation Office will provide assistance tofind accommodation in the private sector. Theywill be sent accommodation lists of propertiesavailable and can be put in touch with otherpostgraduate students also studying atScarborough. All students are advised to visitScarborough before arranging theiraccommodation

6. Exchange Students – A limited number of rooms inCayley Hall are reserved to meet the expecteddemand from exchange students (for both fullsession and one-semester applicants). In theevent of demand exceeding supply, later arrivalsmay be directed to private sector accommodation.

7. Continuing undergraduate students – TheUniversity encourages continuing undergraduatestudents to take up places in University-managedstudent houses, and although here atScarborough the stock is limited some of thesmaller houses are offered to continuing students.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provideaccommodation for the following

• Students with children, expectant mothers orstudents accompanied by their family.

• Part-time or non-registered students – theUniversity regrets that it is unable to provideaccommodation for part-time and non-registeredstudents. Private sector residence isrecommended. Council Tax implications need tobe taken into account.

• Married couples – we do not provideaccommodation for married couples.

8. Your room allocation will only be held until 9 amon 25 September 2012. Should you fail to collectyour key by this deadline, your room will be re-allocated and your deposit may not be refunded.Late arrivals will be assisted with temporaryaccommodation, allocated a permanent room ifavailable, or assisted to find private sectoraccommodation.

Factors to take into considerationLocal students whose homes are within commutingdistance of the campus are invited to contact theAccommodation Office for information and advice ifthey wish to take up University residence.

Mature students: the residential environmentpreferred by mature students tends to be differentfrom that which is enjoyed by youngerundergraduates. Generally, Cayley Hall or the largerUniversity-managed properties would be unsuitable, although some may wish to apply for one of thesmaller managed houses, where rooms can beallocated to mature students.

Study away from Scarborough: students who arerequired to spend a year away from Scarborough aspart of their course (for example professionalexperience placements) are encouraged to contactthe Accommodation Office, before they depart toarrange accommodation for when they return.

Residence fees – 2012/2013Residence fees at the University are set each year bythe Senior Management Team in readiness for thecontinuing students re-application procedure thattakes place in mid January.
