Message from the Principal

Welcome Students and Parents,

It is with Cougar “P.R.I.D.E” that I welcome both new and returning students to Acacia Middle School for the 2017-18 school year. Our mission at Acacia Middle School is to provide a rigorous educational program founded upon the concept of “Cougar P.R.I.D.E.”; an acronym for Positive Respectful Individuals Dedicated to Excellence. We target this mission through our promotion of Cougar P.A.W.S. behavior expectations. It is our goal all Acacia students understand and display attributes that are Positive, Accountable, Working Hard, and Safe (P.A.W.S.) in all settings on campus. At Acacia we are dedicated to providing the highest quality education in a fun, supportive, and safe

environment. The transition to middle school can be a challenging time for students moving from elementary school and preparing for high school. As a school, we diligently work to build a culture and climate that supports students during this critical time in their academic and socio-emotional development. Acacia has excellent research based programs paired with a highly qualified staff to serve the wide range of academic needs of our student population. There is something for everyone at Acacia. We offer many opportunities for enrichment through various clubs, visual and performing arts, academic, and athletic programs. Our academic and athletic competitors are award winning! Acacia’s Battle of the Books Team placed 1st in the district competition. Acacia has also seen double digit growth in district and state assessments and was recently named an Exemplary Site for Project Read for improving literacy across all grade levels. Additionally, our site offers a highly certified AVID program in which students prepare for college and work toward attaining their post-secondary goals. Walt Disney said “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Students at Acacia are encouraged to establish positive goals, set high standards and to achieve their personal best. The staff at Acacia is here to guide and support each student as new opportunities and challenges present themselves every day. I personally invite you to come to Acacia Middle School and see our programs for yourself, meet your child’s teachers, and view our beautiful campus at Acacia’s Back to School Night, Thursday, August 24 at 5:30 p.m. Your child will bring additional information home as the date approaches. I look forward to meeting you and starting this exciting new school year. Sincerely,

Jeff Franks Principal

Open Enrollment Policy

The Hemet Unified School District has adopted an open enrollment policy for student transfers within the district. Students who reside within district boundaries may apply for enrollment in any district school. The school district does not provide transportation from outside a school’s attendance boundary to that school. Approval depends upon available space at the requested schools, but students attending their neighborhood schools will always have first priority for those schools. Applications are available at all school sites and the district office.

Non-Discrimination Notice

The Hemet Unified School District is committed to providing equal opportunities for both sexes and the handicapped in its educational programs and activities, and for employees/applicants as required by Federal and State law. Employees must be sensitive in guarding against unconscious discrimination and stereotyping

Parent and Community Support Groups School Site Council (SSC) Elected members represent students, staff, parents, and the community. The School Site Council monitors the site plan and expenditures of the SIP (School Improvement Plan) budget. Elections will be held at the beginning of each school year to replace parents, teachers, and staff who have concluded their two-year terms. Watch for notifications. English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) Parents of students whose primary language is that other than English are invited to take part in the ELAC meetings that will be held over the school year. Four meetings will be held. Please watch for notifications and reminders. Parent Teacher/Student Association (PTSA) This organization is open to all parents and students. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the school and its functions. Please watch for membership information as the year begins.

Acacia Middle School Student Expectations

What Does Cougar P.R.I.D.E. Mean? It means we are Positive, Respectful, Individuals Dedicated to

Excellence in all we do!!

Positive: Being “Positive” is being happy, smiling, and having a good impact on those around you—even in difficult times. Respectful: Being “Respectful” means you use your manners with everyone with whom you come in contact. You show empathy toward others during difficult times. Individuals: We know we are unique “Individuals” that aspire to greatness. It is very powerful to have great individuals working toward a common goal— positive success both in school and out. Dedicated: Being “Dedicated” means that you will not give up. You will give your best effort in pursuit of your goals. You will be an advocate for not only yourself, but others, also. Excellence: Dedicating yourself to the pursuit of “Excellence” means that you are not satisfied with a mediocre showing. On the contrary, you constantly try to better your best performance.

What Does Cougar P.A.W.S Mean?

Cougar P.A.W.S. are Acacia’s School Wide Behavior Expectations for all students. We expect all students to be: POSITIVE: Use kind words with appropriate language and volume. Be tolerant and accepting of all people. ACCOUNTABLE: Be responsible in all that you do on Acacia’s campus. WORKING HARD: We want all of our students to develop a strong work ethic and commit to always do their personal best. SAFE: Every student should feel safe on our campus. Students should report unsafe behavior immediately to a member of Acacia’s staff.

10

Code of Conduct Students involved in extra-curricular programs, such as ASB, Athletic Teams and Academic Teams at Acacia Middle School are considered leaders and representatives of our student body. As leaders and representatives of Acacia Middle School, students are required to meet and follow defined expectations of academic achievement and behavior. Two expectations are as follows: 1. Academic Achievement: If a student’s most recent report card reflects a GPA of less than 2.0, he/she is ineligible to represent Acacia Middle School in any academic contest, athletic or school event until the next formal grading period. 2. Behavior: Any violation of Education Code 48900 (see pages 19 & 20) may cause a student to be ineligible for a specified length of time, grading period or semester. All violations of Education Code 48900 involving students in ASB, academic or athletic teams, or performing groups will be reviewed by the parent, principal, assistant principal, or counselor and teacher/coach.

Because gang-related symbols are constantly changing, definitions of gang-related apparel shall be reviewed at least once each semester and updated whenever related information is received. Examples of current symbols identified as gang related are professional sports team logos. Example of a symbol advocating prejudice or hatred is the “Iron Cross”. These symbols are not allowed on the school campus.

Attendance

IT IS THE BELIEF OF THE HUSD GOVERNING BOARD AS WELL AS ACACIA MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION AND TEACHING STAFF THAT REGULAR AND PUNCTUAL ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL IS AN ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT FOR A SUCCESSFUL EDUCATION.

Compulsory Education State attendance laws require compulsory education for pupils between the ages of 6-18. Regular attendance is a key factor in the success a student achieves at school. Absences will be excused for the following reasons: illness or quarantine, medical, dental, or optometric services, and attending funeral services of a family member as long as a note is provided by a doctor or other approved documentation (see attendance clerk for clarification if needed.) Other justifiable personal reasons may include: court appearances, observances of religious holidays or ceremonies, and parent employment conferences. Students who are excessively absent or truant, will be scheduled to meet with the School Attendance Review Team (SART) and/or the School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

Getting to school on time, with all books and materials is the student’s responsibility and should be reinforced by parents. AMS students must attend the entire school day in order to participate in any extra-curricular activity, sports, band/choir, dances, etc. Absence/Tardy Definitions 1. Excused-Absence/Tardy - Absence or tardiness due to illness or quarantine, medical, optical, or dental appointments or attending funeral services of a family member (no consequence). 2. Warranted Absence/Tardy - Absence or tardiness due to religious holidays or ceremonies, serious illness in the family, or court appearance. 3. Unexcused Absence/Tardy - Absence or tardy not authorized by the school. Parents cannot excuse a student for personal reasons not approved by California Attendance Laws. Absences by the student without parent knowledge will be marked TRUANT (see consequences section).

18

Consequences for Tardies A student who is tardy to school must report directly to the attendance office. *Arriving late to school (even with a parent note, or tardy to any class period, is an unexcused tardy unless the tardy pertains to numbers 1 and/or 2 above. Excessive tardies (four or more) will result in consequences. *NOTE: Any student arriving thirty (30) minutes late after school begins will be considered TRUANT unless late for a reason listed in Education Code 48200. Consequences for Truancies Absences which are unexcused and unwarranted are considered truancies. California Education Code 48200 requires children of school age to attend school each day. A student who is truant from school is violating state law and is subject to arrest by school or law enforcement officials, per Education Code 48264. Students with habitual truancy problems may be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB), which may refer the case to the Deputy District Attorney for mediation. The District Attorney may then take the case to court and parents may be fined up to $500.00. Further truancies may result in more severe penalties and court action. Clearing an Absence Student absences must be cleared by parent note, medical note, or parent phone call to the attendance office at 765-1620 ex. 207. Parents are encouraged to call for homework by 8:00 a.m. if a student is absent two or more days. Since attendance is taken every period in all classes, absences will appear on the progress and grade reports. Consequences of Excessive Absences Parents are legally responsible for their student’s school attendance. If a student accrues 3 or more absences the parent will be contacted by the school to discuss ways to improve attendance. At 5 days of absence (excused or unexcused), school administration and/or a district attendance specialist will meet with parent and student to create a plan to avoid further absences. Excessive absences will be considered 7 or more and will be referred to a guidance council that could result in a School Attendance Review Board (SARB) process and referral to the District Attorney’s Office. Temporary Excuse from Physical Education The physical education department will honor notes from parents, which explain why students need to be excused from physical activity for health reasons. However, students who need to be excused for more than three consecutive days must have a note from a medical doctor. An adaptive P.E. program is available for students with special needs. Off Campus Permits Acacia Middle School is a closed campus. In order for students to leave campus during school hours for doctor/dental appointments or family emergencies, parents must pick him/her up or follow these procedures: 1. Parents write a note stating where the student is going, times leaving and returning, and how she/he will get there (walk, ride bike, be picked up, by whom, etc.). All notes will be verified by the office. 2. The student brings the note to the office before school begins and receives an off-campus pass to show the teacher when it is time to leave. 3. Upon returning to campus, the student must check in at the office for a readmit to class.

19

Physical Education Uniforms All students at Acacia Middle School are expected to wear the required PE uniform which consists of the following:

Gray t-shirt and blue shorts with school logo. Uniforms with school logo can be purchased at the ASB store

Solid sweat pants or sweatshirts may be during cool weather at the teacher’s discretion

Appropriate athletic shoes with socks Students are not allowed to wear their school clothes under their PE uniform

Physical Education Lockers--Students are assigned lockers in their P.E. classes. The combinations should be kept secret. Valuables such as wallets, cellphones, calculators, etc., should be locked up during P.E. classes. Since many students use the locker room at the same time, students use the lockers at their own risk and should be cautious and leave valuables at home. Acacia Middle School and staff are not responsible for theft or damage to items left in the locker room or lockers.

Other Policies, Procedures and Information

Accidents/Injuries: If students are injured while at school or engaged in school activities, it must be reported immediately to the teacher in charge, no matter how minor the injury. The nurse or administration may complete written reports.

Cafeteria: Charging Policy-Breakfast: $1.50 & Lunch: $2.75 Parents can get a prepaid discount, for every 20 lunches paid in one transaction ($55 secondary), students will get one lunch free. If a paid student’s account runs out they will be allowed to charge the equivalent of three lunch meals. Once a paid student has charged three meals they will not be allowed to charge a fourth time, and will be given a “mini meal” consisting of milk and a fruit. The child will then be directed to go to the school office and call home. Online payment center for cafeteria purchases: mySchoolBucks.com Parents can make payments to their child’s meal account 24x7, 365 days a year. Questions: Call Nutrition Services – 951-765-5100 ext. 5306. Change of Address: It is extremely important to keep phone and address records current, so that in the event of an emergency, the school can contact the parent. It is a good idea to list several adults on the Emergency Card who can be contacted if the parent cannot be reached. For any change of address, please contact the Centralized Registration Department. Non-resident students with false information on their cards will be dropped from the school. Closed Campus: Acacia Middle School has a closed campus. This means that students cannot leave the grounds at any time during the school day except in the company of a parent or guardian. Parents must sign the student out at the office when leaving and sign in upon returning to school. All visitors must check in at the office and a valid ID is required to check out a student from school.

Complaint Procedure: It is the philosophy of the Hemet Unified School District to secure, at the lowest possible administrative level, equitable responses to complaints directed against employees by parents/guardians. Prior to filing a written complaint, the complainant should attempt to speak with the specific employee involved concerning the complaint. Complaint procedures are available at all school sites and the district office.

Fire and Disaster Drills: Students are responsible to teachers and other adults in the event of a fire, disaster, or drill. They must listen carefully and respond quickly to all directions. All drills are considered serious. A. Fire Alarm--Students evacuate to a pre-determined location and wait for further instructions. B. Earthquake Alarm--Students duck under desks/tables, cover heads with one arm and hold onto the desk/table with the other. When the all clear is sounded, students evacuate to a pre-determined location and wait for further instructions. C. Emergency Drill--Students follow staff and/or administrative directions until the emergency situation ends and regular procedures resume.

Homework Requests: If your student is legally absent for two or more days, he or she may request the homework directly from teachers, or the parent may make a homework request by contacting the attendance office by 8:00 a.m. The due date for make-up work will be set at the teacher’s discretion. If your student is absent for one day, he/she will need to get their work from their teachers. Twenty-four (24) hour notice is needed for homework requests.

25

Independent Study If you know that your student will be absent for more than 5 school days, you may request an independent study contract from the attendance clerk. Student and parent will sign the agreement to complete the assigned work independently for credit. All work must be turned in immediately upon return to school and will be subject to grading by each individual teacher. Any incomplete work may result in a recorded truancy. Lost and Found: Students are responsible for their possessions and are encouraged to keep their belongings with them at all times. The front office personnel will keep and return lost items whenever possible. Bringing valuable items to school is strongly discouraged. Acacia Middle School staff members assume no liability for lost, damaged, confiscated, or stolen items. Make-up Work: Students are required to make up all work missed while absent except work missed due to truancy. Work missed because of truancy is made up at the discretion of the teacher. Students that are not truant are allowed twice the number of school days they were absent to make up work except in extenuating circumstances. Students who miss work because of a school suspension longer than two days will be provided work to complete. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher regarding make-up work. Make-up work may be requested by the parent for students who will miss more than three days due to illness or out-of-town trips by calling the Attendance Office. Allow a minimum of one full school day to receive make-up assignments. Students/parents are responsible to pick up work in the Attendance Office. Some teachers/classes may require students to do make-up work upon their return to class. Progress/Grade Reports to Parents: Progress Reports are issued to explain the status of student’s work/behavior/attendance. They may indicate satisfactory or unsatisfactory performance and also serve as warnings when students are not working to their potential. Progress Reports are mailed the 7th and 13th weeks of each semester. Report cards are mailed about one week after the end of each semester. Parents may call or email teachers at any time to check on the progress of their student. Textbooks: Textbooks are provided for students. Books become students’ responsibility and fees are charged for lost/damaged textbooks, library books, and other school-issued supplies.
