Scene #5 Mangrove Trees

Mangroves are trees which grow in the marine coastal sediment in the tropics. Mangroves serve as the habitat for a marine ecosystem. Organisms such as snails, crabs, sponges, small fish, mussels, starfish, and many more, take shelter in the mangroves. Picture taken from http://sofia.usgs.gov/virtual_tour/flbay/

Scene #6 Mobile Classroom

We had 2 locations as our “mobile classrooms.” This mobile classroom was located in a conference room at the resort. Most of our onsite lectures took place in this room, as well as our final project presentations.

Scene #7 Mobile Classroom

Our other mobile classroom was a tent. The tent was set up near our condos and contained specimens and treasures found while exploring our habitats. At the end of the week everything we borrowed to observe was returned to its natural habitat.

Scene #9 Conclusion

Not only did I spend spring break of my junior year in the Florida Keys, but I also had a great hands on learning experience. This trip made my love for biology grow, and now I’m pursuing a degree in biology. This trip also peaked my interest in marine animals. In Maui, HI I have visited the Pacific Whale Foundation. In Grand Cayman I have been have been swimming with stingrays and toured the Sea Turtle Farm. My learning experience in the Florida Keys has definitely influenced my interests and goals.
