Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs provide a dynamic summer educational experience, full of fun and adventure. Girls come to Stoneleigh-Burnham from near and far to explore, discover and engage, while spending their summer at one of the longest-established independent girls’ schools in the country.

Programs make use of our outstanding facilities and are directed by Stoneleigh-Burnham faculty. Students live in the dormitories, eat in the dining hall and enjoy our beautiful 100-acre campus.

Since 1869, Stoneleigh-Burnham School has been preparing girls for college and the world, both in and out of the classroom. Our mission is “to inspire girls to pursue meaningful lives based on honor, respect, and intellectual curiosity.” Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs uphold this same mission in a fun summer setting.

Bonnie Castle Riding Camp (BCRC) is named after Stoneleigh-Burnham School’s most famous and beloved horse, Bonnie Castle, Grand Hunter Champion in 1978 at the Grand National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

BCRC is one of the premier riding camps in the country and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011.

BCRC features instruction at all levels in Hunters, Jumpers, Equitation, Dressage, Combined Training and Equine Studies. BCRC welcomes girls at beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels. Girls should be capable of trotting independently in a group lesson and

grooming and tacking up on their own. At the beginning of every session, each camper’s ability is evaluated to determine her instructional needs and to help place her in an appropriate group.

Each weekday, BCRC participants average two mounted sessions and have one semi-private lesson each week with one of the camp’s experienced and dedicated instructors. Girls develop and improve their riding skills through instruction, practice and competition. At the end of each session, all campers participate in a horse show. In addition to the daily mounted sessions, two additional electives are offered: Equine Studies and Activity (arts, drama, games or sports).

Each girl’s daily schedule is supervised by the residential staff. Girls are busy but find time to read, swim and make new friends. A creative and cooperative atmosphere is emphasized in every aspect of camp life.

BCRC is supervised by Stoneleigh-Burnham Director of Riding Mina Payne Williams. Participants ride and train with the professional staff of the Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center.

Equestrian Facilities

The Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center is one of the best known equestrian facilities in the Northeast. Stabling for

57 horses is available in two separate barns. The indoor riding arena features a 100x200 indoor competition arena with viewing lounge and an adjacent 70x120 indoor warm-up arena.

Facilities also include two outdoor sand rings, a European-style derby field, a cross-country course for beginner novice through preliminary levels and an extensive bridle path encircling the picturesque campus.

$2,600 per session

Intensive Riding CampAugust 6 – August 12

Girls Ages 14 – 18

Our Intensive Riding Camp (IRC) introduces girls to effective riding strategies within the constructs of Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) and Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition. Stoneleigh-Burnham boasts four IEA National Championships and a host of alumnae who have gone on to compete in collegiate equestrian programs.

The IRC offers the unique opportunity to ride multiple horses in daily lessons. School horses range from beginning walk-trot-canter horses to horses that are competitive in the Jumpers and Junior Equitation Medals. Instruction and lessons are focused on Hunt Seat Equitation.

IRC participants have a very active schedule including lessons, classroom education, hands-on learning in the stables and some off-campus free time. The program includes discussion about nutrition, fitness, horse care, stable management and equipment. Lessons are run in a group format and offer the opportunity for girls to change mounts several times.

Proper riding attire is required for IRC lessons. This includes field boots, breeches and a polo or plain colored fitted t-shirt.

The program is supervised by Stoneleigh-Burnham School Director of Riding Mina Payne Williams. Participants ride and train with the professional staff of the Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center.

Registration Process

IRC is a small group of girls who should be capable of jumping at least 2’3” on unfamiliar horses, comfortable riding without stirrups and familiar with coursework in both indoor and outdoor rings.

Participants are asked to fill out a brief questionnaire and submit a letter of recommendation from their current trainer/coach and provide a photo or video. Admission to the Intensive Riding Camp is limited to 16 girls.

This year, the IRC will consist of three days of training at the Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center and 4 days

of showing at the Northampton Hunter and Jumper Show. The cost of camp DOES NOT cover the extra cost of the Northampton Hunter and Jumper Show. These costs will depend on the number of classes entered and will be approved by parents ahead of time. Please contact the Summer Programs office with any questions.

$1,250 per session

Founded in 1997, The Sorvino Dance Intensive provides an intimate setting for intermediate to advanced dancers to train with professional instructors.

Dancers take two technique classes in ballet, jazz and contemporary dance, two repertoire sessions and Pilates daily. The Intensive features a full day of dance with breaks for meals and an afternoon swim. In the evenings, dancers enjoy activities either as a group or with other Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs.

The Intensive takes full advantage of western New England’s rich dance offerings and artists. Dancers attend the

International Dance Festival at Jacob’s Pillow in Lee, MA for a presentation on the Inside/Out stage and a performance on the main stage. Dancers also participate in a culminating performance at the end of the session that parents are encouraged to attend.

The Sorvino Dance Intensive is directed by Ann Sorvino, Juilliard graduate and Chair of the Performing Arts at Stoneleigh-Burnham School. Ann is a former member of the Merce Cunningham Company and is the founder of The Sorvino Project, performing throughout New England, New York City and in Greece.

In 2007, Ann collaborated with her son Vic Sorvino on the dance film entitled Flowing Through. Most recently, the Sorvino Dance Project performed at the Boston Ballet, UMass Fine Arts Center and the Northampton Academy of Music in a new work, Downstream,

a collaboration with photographer Sam Pettingill and composer Greg Snedecker.

The Intensive is staffed by outstanding professionals and guest artists including: Curt Jacobs (Los Angeles professional jazz dancer and instructor), Meg Van Dyck (modern), Nick Arbor (hip hop) and Carrie Towle (ballet).

A Voice of Her Own is a unique program that teaches girls to articulate ideas with confidence and clarity, while improving their oratorical, research and critical thinking skills. A Voice of Her Own faculty teach lifetime skills in public speaking and debate, and girls learn the skills needed to succeed in interscholastic debate and public speaking tournaments.

Mornings are spent preparing speeches or debate briefs and afternoons are devoted to polishing the delivery of material to present to the group each evening.

Participants choose their style of presentation; some debate, some speak persuasively and others interpret dramatic readings. The session culminates in a formal presentation during which each participant presents her best work from the week. Parents are encouraged to attend this presentation.

Stoneleigh-Burnham School has a long and illustrious history in debate and public speaking. It is recognized as one of the strongest programs in New England, competing locally, nationally and internationally. In spring 2010, Stoneleigh-Burnham competed as part

of the American Team at the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships.

A Voice of Her Own is directed by Dr. Paul C. Bassett, coach and founder of Stoneleigh-Burnham’s Debate and Public Speaking Society.
