---- Since end 1980s, a lot of beautiful Chinese mineral specimens have been occurring in the international market;

--- Collecting mineral crystals and specimens is NOT the tradition in China, only few people began to be interested in collecting them recently;

-- Besides Jade and stone carvings, Chinese people do love the natural rocks; but they treat the stones in different ways from the Westerns.

Chinese pay special attention on shape, color, size of the collectable stones, as well as their rareness.

They focus on a stone’s aesthetic appeal as well as any potential links to legend, ancient events, famous people, religions or philosophies.

In effect, the Chinese do not collect the stones themselves; rather they collect a physical representation of the ideas that the stones imply.

Rock collecting in China is, therefore, regarded as a cultural endeavour.

 ----Traditional stone collection will be

continued, but the scale will reduce gradually, because most collectable stones can be faked and the value of these stone are difficult to be evaluated.

Page 62: Stone collecting

62

 ----Chinese mineral collectors will increase very quickly, because more people will be better educated and western culture will be accepted by more and more Chinese.

---- Local collectors will collect more Chinese minerals so that fewer minerals will be exported in near future.

---- China may begin to import mineral specimens in future.
