Stockley Academy is a comprehensive school for students aged 11-19, which aims to transform young people’s lives through learning.

As an Academy, our independence provides the Principal, staff and governing body a wider range of opportunities to develop educational strategies

to raise standards. Our Principal Sponsor is Barry Townsley, a successful stockbroker and banker who brings expertise and contacts with other businesses and

organisations which will support the Academy’s long-term vision.

Stockley Academy is a superb example of a successful working partnership between education and the private sector, with

strong connections to the local community and potential employers.

Stockley Academy Sixth Form is right at the heart of its community. My exceptional team of teachers and support staff provide the best education possible for young people in the local area.Our traditional values of exemplary behaviour, courtesy and smart appearance combine with contemporary best practice in teaching and technology to create the ideal environment for learning to take place. The Academy’s motto is “Learning Transforms Lives”, a belief that we live and breathe in every lesson. Our students are happy, successful and they achieve in their learning across the broad curriculum that we have created. Through high expectations and focusing on learning, we help students to build the skills that bring lifelong success, developing their individual strengths and benefiting from support where it is needed.

Sixth Form students play an essential part in the life of Stockley Academy, setting the standards and acting as role models for our younger students. We provide a wide range of courses and resources designed to help them achieve their ambitions, whether that is in higher education or full-time employment.

The academic curriculum offered alongside the vocational opportunities provided by our business partners and sponsors make the Academy a unique place to continue studies.

Increasing numbers of our students choose to study in our Sixth Form, and every year more go on to study at university. We want every single student to fulfil their aspirations and to lead happy, successful lives.

Moving into the Sixth Form is a big step. It’s important to make an informed choice and take advice from teachers, parents and carers, and friends already studying in the Sixth Form. Teachers and support staff will always be prepared to discuss your choices and answer any questions you may have.

Stockley Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students and we expect all members of staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Our aim is to establish an environment where students feel secure, are encouraged to talk, and are listened to when they have a worry or concern. Parents and carers may also contact us when they have concerns about the welfare or safety of their child. Our purpose-built school is equipped with the latest multimedia facilities and learning resources. Our students enjoy access to a suite of science laboratories and a science garden; ICT suites with the latest technology; advanced design and technology workshops with industry-standard equipment; food technology rooms; an art and design suite with graphic design technology; a multimedia language centre; a video editing suite; large drama studio; excellent music suite with an advanced recording studio and individual practice rooms plus informal meeting areas including the restaurant and atrium, equipped with laptops for continuous learning. Breakfast and access to study rooms are also available to all students before the Academy day starts.

University style lecture theatre...Our lecture style main hall is a versatile resource, which is used widely throughout the year for different events. The Sixth Form library and Learning Resource Centre provide a range of opportunities for continual learning and self-improvement. We have a separate careers library containing up-to-date information and booklets about choices for careers and universities.

...and a great working environmentWe believe attractive surroundings encourage a sense of pride and ownership. The Academy is set in landscaped grounds with external courtyards, a kitchen garden, an amphitheatre, pond and plenty of space for outdoor learning and ecological projects. The dedicated Sixth Form centre also has its own common room and exclusive ICT areas.

We take academic achievement and standards seriously. It means all students have to be prepared to make studying a priority. You will be joining a community of like-minded people who are determined to achieve the very best grades they can – and we will expect you to do the same.

Good attendance and punctuality are important in the Sixth Form. A good attendance record is an absolute requirement for continuing with any course. There is no formal uniform, but you will be expected to wear smart business dress in accordance with the current Sixth Form dress code.

The Head Boy and Head Girl, their deputies and senior prefects, play a major part in the life of the Academy. Sixth Form representatives meet regularly with the Assistant Principal responsible for the Sixth Form to discuss a range of day-to-day issues.

Our aim is to be at the cutting edge of educational development. We see learning both as a great skill in itself and also as a means to a more fulfilling future.

Enrichment activitiesStudents are encouraged to develop not only academically, but also personally, socially and creatively. We offer our students a wide range of activities and opportunities beyond the formal curriculum through our extensive enrichment programme.

Students are actively encouraged to participate in a range of activities which will help them develop a sense of responsibility. Our enrichment programme includes Duke of Edinburgh, Sports Leadership and the Arts Award, as well as public speaking, the EPQ and DIY for Beginners to name just a few.

Additionally, Sixth Form students mentor younger students and help out in lessons and in the library. Mentoring can take many forms: Reading Buddies, supporting literacy, supporting numeracy, help creating friendships, building confidence.

This is complemented by the range of inspirational speakers who visit the Sixth Form, helping students think about their next step.

There is also a regular programme of educational visits, trips to the theatre and other social events, as well as a range of clubs and after-school activities. Students can develop leadership skills and further their learning by becoming involved in activities including Uni Genius, HEAPS, Sport Leadership Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Reading Buddies, Business Enterprise, Italian Conversational Classes and working with Age UK teaching ICT skills to adults.

Student voiceThe term student voice describes how students give their input to what happens within the Academy. The Assistant Principal in charge of the Sixth Form meets with the Senior Prefect team on a fortnightly basis where they discuss the views of the Sixth Form. This can range from planning charity events to social events and student mentoring.

Beyond the Senior Prefect Team all Sixth Form students are encouraged to be actively involved in the life of the Academy and to be positive role models for younger students. We are keen to develop opportunities for students to learn new skills outside the classroom. Sixth Form students participate in school activities such as assemblies and visits from leaders in the community, reading buddies, helping out in the library and in clubs and lessons.

Through our student voice activities, we are helping to develop tomorrow’s leaders.

The support we offer starts prior to day one and continues throughout a student’s time here. An extensive induction programme helps our students find their feet and make a positive start.To aid with the transition from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5 our study skills programme helps students develop the tools and techniques to study independently. Prior to starting Sixth Form students are provided with bridging materials to help with the passage to the higher level of study. These resources allow students to confidently prepare for their new courses.

Year 13 prefects also provide subject-specific mentoring for Year 12 students.

... when you arriveEach student is assigned a personal tutor who will provide individual attention and support. A varied tutorial programme helps students with time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and exams. The Assistant Principal responsible for the Sixth Form will also be happy to meet with students at any time.

Our Sixth Form pastoral team will work with students to set achievable goals and monitor progress, as well as offering guidance throughout the course. Tutors are experienced in the UCAS process and provide support to students planning their progression beyond the Sixth Form, including applying to university and for apprenticeship schemes.

Our close links with universities provide students with the best access to resources for higher education and future careers.

Our established network of contacts will give students a unique insight into the world of work, with many companies offering time from their experienced professionals to act as mentors to our students. We also offer mock interviews and specialist advice to help students achieve their ambitions.

... and while you are hereWe believe in the importance of pastoral care. Students have a personalised tutoring session with their tutor at several points in the year to discuss academic progress and anything else relating to study and future plans. Form tutors will work directly with each student to set individual goals and monitor progress, with the support of other teachers, parents, carers and outside agencies. With a culture which is both caring and firm, we emphasise positive encouragement and celebrate success.

...with businessWe believe in maintaining active links with commerce for investment and a focus on future employment. It also has great value for relevant work experience, shadowing opportunities and inspiring visits from business leaders. We are well supported by leading organisations including BAA, Hasbro, JP Morgan, XL Catlin and PWC.

In a world where competition for both university places and employment is high, students who have undertaken meaningful work experience definitely have the edge when it comes to their applications.

What sets us apart from many Sixth Form colleges is that all our Year 12 students studying level 3 courses participate in a two week work experience programme after their AS examinations and before commencing their A2 courses. Work placements are matched to their A level studies, the courses they hope to study at university or their preferred employment pathways.

In addition, students are able to participate in our annual careers fair where reputable businesses and educational institutions exhibit and promote employment and further education opportunities.

... and with the communityWe are at the centre of a thriving education network, including a long-standing relationship with Brunel University, which regularly offers our students the chance to sample university life.

Our students participate in community activities to support charities, and our involvement with local secondary and primary schools, sports clubs, charities and businesses all provide a valuable educational opportunity in their own right.

WE WORK IN PARTNERSHIP...

WHAT TO DO NOWDeciding on the right course is one of the biggest choices students will make. Students’ choices need to reflect their ability and previous achievements, as well as matching their future plans. Students should always think carefully about their personal strengths, preferred learning styles, and keeping their options open for the future.

Following the Government’s new post-16 guidelines, we are now offering a wider range of courses than ever before, together with the chance to study both GCSE English and Maths. There is every opportunity to find the combination that suits, including both academic and vocational qualifications.
