Murphys Waves StingRay® vs. FlowRider®

Purpose: This analysis sets the record straight by comparing our curved StingRay standing wave ride directly against the old flat Flowrider system still available in the market.* The information below accurately shows the products side by side in an objective comparison which we hope will help you to evaluate the differences between the two sheet flow rides in terms of performance and other key areas, while also highlighting that our StingRay provides double the inclined riding area of the Double Flowrider at a lower cost than the Single Flowrider!

Wave Height: Wave height is important in surfing – small waves provide little push and excitement where optimum wave heights provide thrills and challenges that allow the surfer to fully maximise their skill and experience. The StingRay wave height has been optimised to provide the best possible ride experience for the widest possible range of users – everyone from young kids trying out their first waves to fearless and experience teenagers are catered for by our ideal wave height and adjustable nozzles and flow rates.

Ride Area: The overall ride area has a direct bearing on the users ride experience on any sheet flow wave system (this is not so critical on a deep water ride). During the development of the StingRay we strived to produce a sheet flow ride with the maximum possible inclined (wave) area. Just as in the ocean, the inclined face of the wave is where the surfers ride, with bottom turns being as low as they would go, the flat area in front of any wave is of little or no use. For this reason our curved StingRay has twice the inclined riding area of the flat Double Flowrider and four times the area of the Single Flowrider! This larger wave area gives surfers the best possible experience with a greater free area for tricks and manoeuvres and less constraints from dry areas and returning water on each side of the main flow as is experienced with Flowriders.

LARGER RIDE AREA = MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE!!

The following pages show a series of photographs and illustrations that highlight our perceived differences in the ride area between our curved StingRay and the two versions of the flat Flowrider.

StingRay – Inclined (Wave) Area = 65m2 Area highlighted in red shows available inclined (wave) surfing area.

FlowRider Double – Inclined (Wave) Area = 32m2 Area highlighted in red shows available inclined (wave) surfing area.

These views clearly show that the StingRay has approximately four times the inclined (wave) area of the single Flowrider and twice that of the Double Flowrider…and remember…the StingRay normally sells for less than a Single Flowrider!! Furthermore, the unique curved half pipe shape of the StingRay means that users will not become “beached” on the large dry/water return zones that are ever present on older rides. The images below show the extent that these areas can encroach into the ride and onto your enjoyment of the overall experience. The highlighted areas show the amount of unusable dry or water return areas on the Flowrider rides. We estimate that these areas make up around 15% of the ride surface.

The unique design of the StingRay means that users can instead carve up the curved side walls, meaning there is no limit to manoeuvrability and no limit to fun!!

LARGER RIDE AREA = MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE!!

Viewing: The StingRay incorporates patent applied for technology for several of its unique benefits and technological advances. The low level water delivery nozzles and wide open aspect of the large curved ride surface offer the best possible viewing arrangement allowing revenue through food, beverage, retails, competition and media events to be maximised. See below for a sectional view showing the StingRay’s unrivalled inclined ride area and open viewing.

In contrast, the image below shows the large amount of flat (dead) water and the short inclined (wave) ride area available with Flowrider.
