Interview with British Heavyweight Wrestling Champion Sam Adonis

Born in America in 1989, Sam has been a professional wrestler since 2008 and has worked extensively throughout the independent circuit, appearing in events all over the world. He was at one point signed to a developmental contract to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2011, wrestling briefly in its training territory Florida Championship Wrestling before being released in that same year. Since then, Sam has gone on to wrestle regularly throughout the British and European promotions including All Star Promotions in the UK. Why are you over in the UK wrestling and not in your native America? I used to have a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) contract back in 2011 and while I was there I had to have knee surgery and a couple of other incidents, that ended up with them getting rid of me; but I stayed on good

terms with them and William Regal, who is famous from WWE television, put me in touch with my new boss Brian Dixon of All Star Wrestling in the UK, which he has been running for over 45 years. It was like a peace offering in that we are going to get rid of your contract but we still like you so why don’t you go over to England and wrestle there. Since then I have been over here working full time. It is just amazing; the volume of work, the amount of shows and the style of shows is so completely different to the United States, it is another step in the right direction in my career. Another difference must be the change in the weather in England? Yes sure is; you don’t get this in Florida that’s for sure but as soon as I go back to Florida I start complaining it is too hot. I am one of those people - no matter where I am I always want better weather. How did you get started in wrestling? My father was actually a wrestling promoter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and my brother is a wrestler, my brother is actually still under contract with WWE, he is Corey Graves, a journalist and colour commentator on their broadcasts. It was almost a family business - we had shows going like once a month. My mum would sell the tickets; my sister would sell the merchandise, it was what I grew up around and at a young age I started telling everyone I was going to be a wrestler; it is like if you grow up in a restaurant chances are you will be a good cook, you don’t have to try it - is kind of innate, it’s a second nature. So it has been my life since I was probably 3-4 years old and I would like to say that helped me get as far as I have in professional wrestling. The training you do must be intense? It is ridiculous, it is so hard. I was basically in a ring twice a week for 2 years before I was allowed on a show. It’s the bumps, the

Page 5: Sticks magazine March 2016

5

rolls, the protecting yourself or learning how to throw somebody or tie them in a knot. It is more physical than anything you can imagine. There must be a fair bit of travelling as All Star does 250 plus shows a year? It is not as glamorous as people make it out to be. We are travelling a lot, don’t get me wrong there are still the job perks but it is a full time professional wrestling tour and that is the difference between All Star Wrestling and a lot of the local outfits here in the UK. It is weird, everybody in the UK thinks they are a wrestler, we are the only touring company that covers the whole of the country and that’s why our shows are full of the best talent in the world, we have guys coming from England, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, United States, Japan, Canada and all over, it is bigger than your local wrestling event. What is a normal day like for you? Well when we are on tour, you usually get kicked out of your hotel about 11am, then I generally try to find a gym somewhere and then you drive what ever distance it is to the that days venue. We usually get to the venue 4 -5pm, do the show, leave the venue get some food and do it all again!!! What do you do on your days off? I do nothing and I love it because you go so hard on tour, is so busy you can go 2-3 weeks without a break, so when you do get time to yourself I will pop to the gym but that is about it will lay on the couch from 2pm till about 9pm and then go to bed, I don’t understand British TV, you seem to have people who are famous for no reason. I can’t stand reality TV but I do love “Only Fools and Horses” In the wrestling business who are your rivals at the moment? My best bouts are with James Mason, he is as good as a professional wrestler gets. I think honestly he is a hidden gem in this industry and anybody who knows anything about wrestling tends to agree. I have the utmost respect for him and there is nothing like going in front of a packed out theatre of 1000 people and fighting the guy because the energy in the building is always electric. There is a guy called Oliver Grey from NXT who is a pain in the butt to fight with but it has to be done. It makes you step your game up, I can’t say it is fun, but when you step out of the ring, whether you win or lose, sometimes you’re in a bit of pain and being the champion at the moment means I am the one everybody is keeping an eye on - which is nice because it make me want to raise my game. You worked for the WWE in America, what is the difference in working for a big company and working for All Star? It would be the way you conduct yourself, you are dealing with millions and millions of dollars when you work for WWE and you have to think about 5 or 6 steps ahead on every move you make, how you dress for the day, what you say to somebody, it is more professional, here it is not to say we are not professional and the beauty of us being here is we have creative expression and we have our independent freedom, so we travel throughout the United

Page 6: Sticks magazine March 2016

6

Kingdom and enjoy our life, we have fun but it’s high pressure because we expect it from ourselves. In America it is a completely different ball game you could say. You have recently worked at Butlins, did you find the audience different there? The thing is wrestling fans are easy to entertain, they will come anyway but when you get some guy who is coming to a show his kid wants to see but he doesn’t want to be there, you have to change your game to make sure he enjoys the show. Who were your wrestling heroes when you were growing up? Obviously Hulk Hogan would had been one of them, The Rock would had been a huge influence of mine but a very young age I started to pay attention to wrestling all over the world so most of the names would mean nothing to most people, but The Rock and of course Hulk Hogan were my major influences that everybody knows. You mentioned your brother earlier, did he influence you? Yes he use to train me, my father had a wrestling school and it would be every Monday and Wednesday night, we would go out and train for 3 hours and as I said I did that for 2 years before I had my first match. It is a lot different in the US, we have to go to a wrestling school, and you almost have to graduate from a wrestling school, here in the UK most wrestling schools are just Saturday and lets go wrestle in a ring for a couple of hours; no curriculum and no standard and it is upsetting to us professionals that travel the country because everybody thinks that they are professional wrestlers when really they are just some local kids copying what they see on TV. What are your signature moves in the ring? I poke people in the eye, I scratch, I bite, and I do whatever it takes. It is not about moves, it is about winning, being the champion and making the money. Apart from your knees, what other injuries have you had? I have been very lucky the knees have been the only ever surgery that I have had from wrestling but I have dislocated my shoulder, chipped teeth, you break fingers like they are going out of style - obviously accidents happen but carelessness is usually what they come down to so the less serious injuries you have the better off you are that’s why in America we spend so much time training and getting prepared. What does 2016 hold for Sam Adonis? I have no idea, no one knows but it seems I am already in a good spot right now. I do a lot of work outside the UK in Europe and everything, I still have dates in the USA, the beauty of it I take everyday at a time and see what comes next. I am 26 now, I have already had a WWE contract and I have wrestled in Europe for 5 years so I don’t see any stop in sight, also to keep winning, keep injury free and make more money and maybe find some nice British lady that will cook me breakfast every morning.

Monitoring Employees’ Internet Usage

It’s official.

Employers can read workers' private messages sent via chat software and webmail accounts.

A recent ruling means that it is legal and acceptable for employers to read private communication taking place during working hours.

In a case known to Consensus HR, a customer service employee sent inappropriate photos to a client in error. The photos had been circulated amongst the team via social media. This emphasises how vital it is for companies to take steps to protect their reputations. Now, this can include accessing private communication happening during working hours.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) introduced this change. It ruled that an employer that read a worker's Yahoo Messenger chats sent while he was at work was within his rights. Judges said he had breached the company's rules and that his employer had a right to check on his activities. Such policies must also protect workers against unfettered snooping, they said.

The worker, an engineer in Romania, had hoped the court would rule that his employer had breached his right to confidential correspondence when it accessed his messages and subsequently sacked him in 2007.

His employer had discovered that he was using Yahoo Messenger for personal contacts, as well as professional ones. He was sending /receiving personal messages with his fiancée, and his brother, including messages about his health and sex life.

Because it believed it was accessing a work account, the judges said, the firm had not erred.

They dismissed the man's request, saying that it was not "unreasonable that an employer would want to verify that employees were completing their professional tasks during working hours".

The judges said: "The employer acted within its disciplinary powers since, as the domestic courts found, it had accessed the Yahoo Messenger account on the assumption that the information in question had been related to professional activities and that such access had therefore been legitimate. The court sees no reason to question these findings."

Page 9: Sticks magazine March 2016

9

Taking action…

The man, named Bogdan Barbulescu, had already lost his case in Romania's domestic courts and appealed to the ECHR.

He argued that his right to a private life had been breached when his employer had read a log of messages on a Yahoo Messenger account he had set up for work, as well as that from a second personal one.

Mr Barbulescu's employer had banned staff from sending personal messages at work and this was in breach of his employment contract.

To check his account, the judges said, it had been necessary for his employer to access his records.

The judges said this was a proportionate step because the firm did not access other information stored on his work computer.

And they added that Mr Barbulescu had had prior warning that the company could check his messages.

Matthew from Consensus HR explains: “This European Court of Human Rights case highlights the importance of having appropriate and lawful social media and employee-monitoring policies in place. These must be appropriately communicated to all employees and adhered to by the employer. Appropriate action needs to be taken when required, especially with the changes that are happening in the workplace. These changes include longer working hours and days and the continual increase in the use of IT tablets, phones & computers. Almost every business is affected and employers should update their contracts and review their disciplinary and grievance policies.”

Bereavement and Individual Response to Loss Today I have been ruminating that in life we all deal with events that happen to us differently, and it is not always the events that shape us, but our individual responses to them. Yesterday, I went to visit my friend Sheila. Six weeks ago on a bright sunny day, her only child Laura was killed outright in a car crash. She was 27 and had her life in front of her. Laura was also the best friend of my daughter Annie who she had known since nursery school. I was aware that I had subconsciously been putting this visit off for some days, as I anticipated it would be very difficult, and that despite all my knowledge about bereavement, I, like anyone else would struggle to articulate the rights words, or indeed any words, to say to my friend in comfort. It was then with a very heavy heart that my leaden feet trod the path to her door. My stomach was churning with emotions; sadness for my friend, guilt that my daughter was still with me, overwhelming fear I would not be able to offer comfort to Shelia at this terrible time; after all I am supposed to be good at that. I took a few moments to compose myself using a mindfulness technique that is helpful whenever I need to feel calm, and then rang the bell. The door flew open and Sheila smiled at me, greeted me like a long lost friend and swept me up in a big hug bundling me into her chaotic kitchen, which as ever, was full of noise and animals jostling for position. As I glanced around I realized I was not alone, two of Annie and Laura’s friends, Suzie and Max, were sitting at the table surrounded by photos squealing with laughter, a glass of wine in hand. Sheila turned to me smiling proffering a glass and said “come on you’ve had a hard day you don’t need to drive, join us” I sat down confused, I had been expecting to offer comfort to my grieving friend and she was offering me wine and laughter. As I settled I saw what they were doing, they were making photo boards of Laura. Suzie held up a photo of Laura and Annie taken in Italy on their year out of university. In it they were standing by the Trevi fountain arms around each other and beaming at us, both looking so young, beautiful and so full of life. The tears pricked my eyes and despite my best effort started to flow. “Come on, come on” said Shelia “look at the fun they were having …. see that, enjoy and be thankful for it”. She continued “don’t misunderstand me, some days I cannot move for the grief, physical pain and the wretchedness of it all, and on those days I hibernate, but Laura lived and was part of you all. I want to remember all the wonderfulness of that and to share the ongoing life of her friends, so to do that I must move forward, even if it is baby steps” She picked up another photo of Laura in a wheelbarrow, dressed as a pirate and waving a sword while being wheeled by Annie, Suzie, Max and friends similarly dressed. I remembered the occasion well, it was a 6th form barbeque and I had been so cross they were all drunk, as Suzie reminded me. Now we looked at it and laughed at the fun they were having, and the stories that Suzie and Max told about the night. “Now doesn’t that feel good?” said Shelia as she squeezed my arm and

she was right it did. Walking home later I was humbled and full of admiration for my friend, her courage in the face of such a tragedy, and her continued ability to take joy in life. If you are having bereavement difficulties, why not speak to one of our specialist

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS With Valentines Day out of the way and the red roses wilting, it is now safe to start talking practically about our relationships again. With the unavoidable increase in our divorce and separation rates, it means an increasing percentage of the population getting married or moving in together are not doing it for the first time. Further, one or both parties may have children from a previous marriage. This can mean ongoing financial ties to an ex-partner, and possibly having a home or assets to bring into their new relationship. It is therefore more important than ever for couples to take a short break from the romance of their new relationship or wedding plans, and to be realistic. If they are about to start living together, or planning to tie the knot, they should take legal advice on having a Cohabitation Agreement or Pre-nuptial Agreement put in place. These don’t have to be long or complicated documents. Their aim is to record what you can agree amicably now about what would happen if you ever split up:-

• Do you get to keep the house you brought into the relationship? • Do you financially support one another after separation? • How do you split anything held in joint names? • Do you share any debt?

The idea is to avoid the time, anxiety and costs of a complex legal battle later on. It is appreciated no-one has a crystal ball and your thoughts on how assets should be divided between you may change if you are married for many years, or if you have children together, No problem – you simply agree to review the terms of the Agreement on certain “trigger events”. If you would like more information on having a Cohabitation or Pre-Nuptial Agreement drawn up please contact Vijaya Sumputh on 0208 363 4444 or email her at [email protected] Curwens LLP is your local firm of solicitors offering most areas of legal advice – based in Royston, Hoddesdon and Enfield.

A PASSION FOR ART AND WRITING

Sharon Struckman chats to talented local artist and author, Kevin Archard.

Kevin Archard’s love for the Spitfire started as a young man. He remembers standing on the grass near the runway at Elstree aerodrome and could not have predicted the effect his first sight of a real Spitfire would have on him. It flew across the airfield low and fast, its curves and slim lines shouting out "I am a thoroughbred" and then the noise hit him. There is nothing in this world to equal the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin at full throttle. As the Mark Nine Spitfire cannoned over his head, his knees turned to jelly. He was in love. This is how his life-long love affair with aircraft was cemented and after that wonderful day, his love of art and writing began.

Born in 1951 in Balham London at a time when the ravages of world war two were clear to see. Food was still rationed and children had few toys or entertainment, using their imaginations to become a 'Knight in Armour' or maybe an 'Ace Spitfire pilot'. When Kevin started school he was taken with the amount of coloured pencils and paints available to him, inspiring his creativity. He clearly remembers during art lessons, joining his piece of paper to that of his friend sitting next to him. They would then act out the most exciting battles, by drawing tiny tanks, ships and of course Spitfires.

Page 14: Sticks magazine March 2016

14

By the time he left school he was drawing regularly and has continued throughout his life. In his travels around Britain, Kevin has been inspired by the different architecture, landscapes and character of our beautiful country and has tried to represent them in his paintings. Kevin has now retired, lives in Welwyn with his lovely wife and spends his time concentrating on his passions, art and writing. His first novel, Defiant, based on a women pilot, is a fantastic, “can’t put down” book. His leading lady, Mary Bolton survives an air crash in 1943 but suffers partial amnesia that wipes out the memory of the man she loves. Flash backs of the accident induce a fear of flying resulting in her joining the Special Operations Executive. She finds herself in occupied France working with the resistance to eliminate top Nazi officers. Amidst the brutality of the SS, the resistance cell launch their mission and Mary comes face to face with the sadistic Nazi bully who is terrorizing civilians in rural France. This remarkable story is available from Amazon Kindle as an e-book or as a paperback. (ISBN 9781519173317) Kevin is now in the process of writing book two, which will be published in April this year on Amazon. If you would like to meet this talented artist and author, he will be at Mardleybury Gallery in Datchworth on 12 and 13 March 2016 between 11am and 4pm. He will be exhibiting a variety of his aviation and landscape art; he will also be painting on sight and doing a book signing.

Local Treasures We all love our high streets and shopping centres but

sometimes I just like getting away from the chain stores and finding something a bit more kooky, independent shops where the owners really care about their wares, you know it’s a ‘heart centred’ business. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop recently when I went to Battlers Green Farm near Radlett, it’s rural village shopping at its best, in addition to the gift shop, traditional butchers and a great fresh fish shop, there’s also The Bull Pen Café (the cinnamon toast is a must) and the brilliant holistic ‘new age’ shop Destiny Rising. It’s a treasure trove of gorgeous crystals, cards, trinkets, books, candles, wind chimes et al. They also offer treatments and therapies. My little girl and I each filled a little silk bag with crystals and then she chose a necklace for my birthday gift (I’ve taught her well) it’s a beautiful colourful chakra necklace so helps to remind me to stay balanced. I haven’t been there yet but I know there are other similar shops across Herts. including Angelic Realms in Hemel Hempstead, The Enchanted Oak in the old town in Hemel, and The Enchanted Grove in Goffs Oak. Once home I came across something else for my son to buy for me, we’ve long known about the power of magnets for healing and some of the health stores across Herts. sell copper and magnetic bracelets, but often magnetic jewellery is very functional rather than ‘beautiful’ but enter onto the scene Magnetix Wellness who make the most gorgeous magnetic jewellery that looks great too.

They have beautiful and contemporary heart pendants with a 1200 gauss magnet meaning you will not only look good, but will feel good too, anklets, and great bracelets.

www.magnetix-wellness.com The founder of the company Petra found that wearing magnets really helped her and set about creating a business around the jewellery, literally a heart centred business! It’s so often the case that entrepreneurs or sole traders start by having a real passion and desire to share something of their own experience with a wider audience. I’m running a one day intensive workshop in central London, Saturday 19th March ‘How to market yourself professionally and personally’, ideal for you if you know you have a purpose and want to get your message out to a wider audience or if you just want to know how to ‘sell’ the ‘best you’ in the workplace. There are seriously limited places but if you can make the trip in from Herts. and this one is for you, I look forward to meeting you; I’ll be the one wearing the magnetic jewellery! http://bit.ly/1XlGlH5

Hero Cheese of the Month – Rossini by Toby Archer

There's blue cheese - and then there's Rossini. For fans of creamy, spicy Lombardian blues and “ubriaco” wine cheeses, Rossini is a dream come true. At first glance, the blue-veined paste looks familiar, but the rind and the flavour are stained with sweet Italian wine. Bottom line, it's spicy and velvety with a mysterious dark fruit finish that leaves you wanting more. For all the headstrong flavours involved, this cheese is unbelievably well-balanced and definitely lives up to their slogan: “a harmonious symphony of tastes.” This very new and unusual cheese comes from the

region of Lombardy in northern Italy. Made with whole pasteurised cow's milk, Rossini is an erborinato (marbled or blue-veined) cheese, and is particularly unusual as it has been cured with the must from the passito grapes from Pantelleria wine. The cheese undergoes a traditional aging of about 3 months, during which time the veining becomes more pronounced. The rind takes on light burgundy tints from the wine. It develops a distinct and rather piquant taste while maintaining its smooth and pleasant composure. This perfect blend of blue veining and sweet grape must result in a cheese which is slightly spicy, yet never exaggerated. A product of the countryside, Rossini is rich in hints of apricots and almonds, and all the fragrance of the flowers and herbs of the varied rich mountain pastures. It is a true symphony of tastes that peaks in a crescendo of marvellous gustatory sensations.

BigBarn on TV: Building Our Local Food Community BigBarn is all about reconnecting consumers with where their food comes from and building sustainable, local food communities where farmers and consumers get a good deal. A big ambition you might say? But something that is not that difficult and desperately needs to be done. Not that difficult because there are thousands of local producers, shops and home growers that can be linked up. And this needs to be done, because the modern food industry and supermarkets are not giving farmers, or consumers, a good deal.

So we thought we should prove the concept by building our local food community, see below, and join in! Details of the project:

Over the last 30 years the food industry has become dominated by supermarkets and disconnected consumers with where their food comes from.

Marketeers have told we consumers that we are too busy to cook and that convenience, high sugar drinks and ready meals are good. Local people growing fresh healthy food

As a result many mums have stopped cooking fresh healthy food and Farmers, on average, only get 9p in every £1 spent on food in the supermarket. Thousands of dairy farmers have sold up and small, mixed farms employing and connecting with rural communities are a thing of the past.

Many people realise the food industry and consumers need to change and there is a trend away from the big one stop shop to more local shopping.

What is needed is real incentive to change and to harness the most powerful of all influencers of all, our children!

Our local food community project will capitalise on BigBarn’s successful Crop for the Shop scheme in a school (BBC video here, to build a child enthused, social, inclusive, and sustainable, community led, local food industry as an alternative to the profit focused, anti-social national one.

All through the project case studies blogs and videos will be produced to help other communities, rural, and urban, follow.

The school, local people and farmers will be encouraged to grow, and trade, food so that everyone is reconnected with where their food comes from, cooks seasonal produce, waste less, and save money.

Our local school and local people are already growing a small amount of fruit and veg, and there is a forgotten community orchard, but the vast majority shop at supermarkets 10 miles away and are disconnected with where their food comes from, and lack the knowledge, and will, to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

This local food industry will bring back the excitement of the food seasons and demand will grow with supply. The lost generation of Mum’s who hate cooking will

Page 18: Sticks magazine March 2016

18

be energised to cook with their children who have cooked the food they have grown at school.

We have 7,000 local producers and retailers on our local food map and are adding more all the time. Many have opted in to our Crop for the Shop scheme with a carrot flag on their icons.

So if you have a local shop like this, and school, and team, who might like to build your local food community, send us an email. We will send you case studies and latest videos and could even help get a grant!

Supermarkets cash in on sourdough bread. Typical

Rising sales of sourdough bread have prompted supermarkets and industrial bakers to launch their own versions. Typically they are cutting corners causing potentially serious health consequences.

Authentic sourdough contains only flour, water and yeast and, most important, a long fermentation process to allow the yeast to break down some of the carbohydrates. This makes the bread easier to digest and can help those with gluten intolerance.

The big bakers prefer to speed up the cycle by adding commercial yeast and other ingredients which they are under no legal obligation to reveal to shoppers. Shocking!

So watch out and ask questions when you buy Sourdough bread. How long was the fermentation process? Can you tell me ALL the ingredients?

Or better still use our map to visit your local artisan bakery or buy in our MarketPlace. Or best of all, make it yourself, it’s dead easy.

Simply buy decent flour and banneton and baking stone and watch the video below. The picture above is one of my home baked loaves and cost about 40p per loaf! Have a go; you could even supply your friends.
