Oil equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) increases as a function of water content and reaches 100% at saturation point. Measurement of the absolute water content goes beyond this point.

OILAN A4 Water in Oil Analyzer

The development of steerable propulsors has led to replacing traditional rudders with azimuth thrusters on ships and offshore oil rigs. The operational idea of an azimuth thruster is that the propeller can be rotated 360 degrees on a vertical axis. This improves the manoeuvrability significantly, which is the main reason why azimuth thrusters are becoming more common all the time.

An approved propulsion condition monitoring system gives multiple benefits to ship owners and oil rig operators. It not only saves maintenance costs but also increases the maximum availability of the thruster. On vessels where an approved propulsion condition monitoring system is in use, a class requirement for a fixed five-year dry docking interval can be waived. Instead, the propulsion system is maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and major overhauls are scheduled when needed.

Water in lubrication oil is the most important oil condition information. Water causes corrosion and wearing, and it reduces oil lubrication properties. In propulsion systems, water content in lubrication oil is typically rather high. When the water content exceeds the saturation point of the oil, the excess water appears in the form of free water. Kytola OILAN A4 measures beyond this point, which makes it a crucial device on a propulsion condition monitoring system.

The OILAN A4 Water in Oil Analyzer is an IR-absorbance-based online instrument for measuring the absolute water content in oil (ppm).

As the measurement is performed online, the response is continuous and fast, which is crucial in order to detect sudden changes in the water content and to be able to react before any failures of the lubricated equipment occur. Time-consuming and expensive samplings and laboratory analyses are also avoided.
