Welcome to State Opera SA’s 2015 season of great operas and operatic greats. Our season features two grand opera experiences, an operatic oratorio and a host of smaller works, both new and old, all of them falling under the aegis of our overriding theme for 2015 – for the love. For the love of pleasure, we present Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the

brilliant Goran Järvefelt production. Its vaulted sets and spectacular costumes provide a lavish playing field in which Adelaide-born, UK-based baritone Grant Doyle will spread his seductive mischief. Featuring an incredibly strong cast

including Douglas McNicol, Teresa La Rocca, Virgilio Marino and Sharon Prero, this will be Mozart to die for!

In August, for the love of temptation, State Opera SA will present Gounod’s Faust, in an Opera Conference production based on the famous Royal Opera House, Covent Garden production of Sir David McVicar. Complete with a full ballet, and towering sets that fill the Festival Theatre stage, this is the return of truly grand opera to Adelaide. The music is among the most beautiful that Gounod ever wrote, to be sung by the State Opera Chorus and a who’s who of South

Australian and national opera stars, crowned by the spectacular triumvirate of James Egglestone as Faust, Kate Ladner as Marguerite and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Mephistopheles. What more could you want?

During the season of Faust, there will be a chance to hear two performances of Verdi’s fabulous Requiem – a work by an operatic genius which changed the face of choral music forever. Hear the famous State Opera Chorus

in full flight with the greatest choral masterwork of the repertoire.

Don Giovanni, Faust and the Verdi Requiem will be brilliantly supported by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra – a match made in heaven.

With Opera Studio productions, pop-up opera, a raft of ancillary events and the ever-growing young and emerging artist Opera Program, supported by the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, this is an excellent time to become a

part of the State Opera family. I thank the State Government through Arts SA and the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, as well as our patrons, donors and sponsors, including our principal

corporate partner TRILITY, for their ongoing support of our dream and vision.

State Opera SA is a small company which constantly makes a big splash. For the love of the art form, music and the stage, our brilliant performers, creative teams and staff devote years of their lives

to be the very best at what they do. Our greatest desire is for us to be able to share that with you, so that you can enjoy opera, for the love…

DON GIOVANNIMozart

In the hedonistic pursuit of pleasure, Don Giovanni, seducer, rake, libertine and murderer, leaves behind him a trail of broken hearts, broken promises and broken lives. Accompanied by his faithful, if occasionally unwilling valet

Leporello, Don Giovanni infiltrates, invades and inveigles his way into the bedrooms of Europe, with his catalogue of conquests which includes 1003 maidens in Spain alone! Such wickedness cannot stay unpunished and the demise

of the Commendatore, father of one of the jilted maidens, at Don Giovanni’s hand, sets in motion the wheels of divine retribution. This is Mozart at his finest, with a classic mix of comedy and tragedy that has enthralled audiences

for more than two centuries. Adelaide-born Grant Doyle makes a triumphant return to his home town in the role of Don Giovanni. He is joined by the incomparable Douglas McNicol as Leporello, in one of his signature roles.

The supporting cast comprises a veritable who’s who of local and national opera stars, with the magnificent State Opera Chorus and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under the expert guidance of maestro Graham Abbott.

Don’t miss your assignation with Don Giovanni!

“Disdain sanity and scholarship,The loftiest attributes man has been given,

And so the devil has youAnd your soul is infallibly lost.”

Goethe’s Faust

Faust, disillusioned with a life of study, laments the life and love that has passed him by. In vain, he tries to end it, but in frustration, strikes an infernal deal whereby he buys the services of Mephistopheles while on earth in exchange for his soul, which will belong to the Devil after death. Mephistopheles shows Faust a vision of the beautiful and chaste Marguerite. Through trickery and deception, Faust wins the heart of Marguerite, diverting her from young and honest

suitors with gifts and jewels procured as part of his demonic contract. Having won her, she becomes pregnant to him and he abandons her, sending her on a spiral to oblivion. Meanwhile, Mephistopheles promises Faust the love

of the most beautiful women in history, but it is Marguerite’s face that Faust sees. They are reunited briefly but Marguerite places her fate in the hands of God, whereupon she dies and is drawn up to heaven. Faust repents and Mephistopheles realises he’s been cheated of his prize – Faust’s soul. James Egglestone sings the title role, with Teddy Tahu Rhodes brilliantly portraying the role of Mephistopheles. France-based Adelaide-born soprano Kate

Ladner returns to round out a perfect operatic triumvirate, with a stellar supporting cast, the State Opera Chorus, a ballet troupe and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kynan Johns.

VERDI REQUIEMVerdi

“Just Judge of punishment: give me the gift of redemption before the day of reckoning.”

Verdi Requiem ‘Sequence’

Verdi’s mighty Requiem stands as one of the greatest choral masterpieces in the repertoire – part oratorio, part opera, and dramatic from beginning to end. It’s a one-hundred minute journey through some of the most

exciting and sublime music Verdi ever wrote. From the soaring Sanctus to the pounding opening of the Dies Irae, with the massive bass drum heralding the explosive entry of the chorus, this is music of gut-wrenching force.

With the fabulous State Opera Chorus in its element, and the wonderful Adelaide Symphony Orchestra bringing Verdi’s superb orchestral writing to life, this is a stunning inclusion in State Opera SA’s 2015 season,

to be performed during the season of Gounod’s Faust.Once heard, never forgotten.

CLOUDSTREET WORKSHOP

George Palmer

Tim Winton’s iconic novel has become a modern Australian classic. It then became a highly successful play and a brilliant TV miniseries. Now Cloudstreet takes the ultimate leap to transform into a stunning work of music-theatre. Composer and librettist George Palmer, in close association with director Gale Edwards, has created a work of true

beauty and genius.

Act One of Cloudstreet was workshopped in Sydney in 2012. Act Two was workshopped by State Opera SA in February 2014, with two public presentations in The Opera Studio at Netley, and it was sensational. The Studio audiences literally wept with joy. In late 2015, State Opera SA will present public showings of a third and final

workshop for Cloudstreet in The Opera Studio which will take place in the period from September to November 2015.

You will have the opportunity to see music theatre history in the making. Stay in touch with State Opera SA as more details will be forthcoming throughout the year.

The Countess, Susanna, has a secret that she really doesn’t want her husband, Count Gil, to discover. The more his suspicions are aroused, the greater the lengths she has to go to in an effort to conceal it. But the lingering smell of tobacco is a dead give-away. Surely she isn’t having an affair with a smoker?!

This one-act comic intermezzo, composed in 1909, features beautiful music by Italian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari – it’s a breath of operatic fresh air – or is it?

BLUEBEARD’S CASTLEBartók

Judith and Bluebeard arrive at his castle, which contains seven locked doors. Judith insists that the doors be opened to let light into the castle, but Bluebeard resists her. Judith is very persistent and Bluebeard eventually

relents. As each door is opened, an aspect of Bluebeard’s dark and twisted soul is revealed, but he insists that the final door must remain closed. What lies behind the seventh door? Bela Bartók created a brilliant one-act, operatic

psychodrama based on the famous Bluebeard story.

This one-act comic opera was composed by Jacques Offenbach in the space of a week, and it enjoyed great success. The elderly Fortunio is married to the young and beautiful Laurette. As a young man, Fortunio seduced the wife of his

employer with the aid of a very alluring song. Now Fortunio suspects his young wife is up to no good and singles out his second clerk, Valentin, as the other half of the supposed affair. Valentin is indeed in love with Laurette, but is too timid to

declare his passion for her. Nevertheless, Fortunio aims to dismiss him. In the meantime, the other clerks have discovered Fortunio’s seduction song and his hypocrisy is exposed. But the song clearly has power, as in singing it, all the clerks suddenly acquire new girlfriends. Offenbach was the master of the comic stage and this work is a gem among gems.

BASTIEN UND BASTIENNEMozart

This one-act singspiel was composed when Mozart was only twelve years old, but shows all the charm, beauty and genius of his later works. Bastienne is a shepherdess, fearful of losing the love of Bastien, her ‘dearest friend’, and so she seeks out some advice on how to win him back. Bastien learns, falsely, that Bastienne has a new lover, and so resorts to magic to ensure that she loves him and not this new suitor. It all gets very confused, but love wins out in

the end and the couple are reconciled. A charming and beautiful showcase for our Young and Emerging Artists.

OPERA EDUCATION“Music conveys moods and images.

Even in opera, where plots deal with the structure of destiny, it’s music, not words, that provides power.”

Marcel Marceau

Education and mentoring is a vital part of the daily life within any opera company. To see children as young as seven, beaming from the magic created by a human voice and orchestra live on stage, can inspire us all. Music education can also strengthen imagination and creativity in all aspects of development. It is through these early experiences that a lifelong love of opera can begin and, as they are the future opera audience, we are delighted to be able to

work with children of all ages and backgrounds around South Australia.

As adults, we too can re-energise ourselves through opera – socially, artistically, intellectually and most of all, to breathe life into our soul. Opera education is about asking questions: What is an aria? How do they do that quick scene change? What do I listen out for in the music? How will I understand what it’s about? These questions are easily answered by beginning your opera love story with us – even if you are an experienced opera lover, or just

dipping in your toes to test the water. You’ll be surprised by what you can learn about the people behind the scenes and the artists themselves, for instance most divas usually have a couple of beers afterwards! Best of all, through opera education you are unlocking a broader field of literature, history and technical knowledge to enhance your

live performance experience with us.

In 2015 we are launching our exciting new groups including En Garde! and Avant Garde. Along with The Friends of State Opera, we are able to offer each and every one of our valued patrons a chance to explore the opera repertoire at a level tailored to the individual. As an opera ‘newbie’, our En Garde! evenings will be a chance to meet some of

the cast, get to know the synopsis and interact with like-minded people. Avant Garde will give you a chance to look at things from a different point-of-view, explore varied themes and the contemporary relevance of the operas with

Q&A panel events. Through The Friends of State Opera, you will be able to get stuck into the nitty-gritty of your relationship with us through social events, fundraising and of course, opera education. The Friends’ Opera Voices

Introduction evenings are a chance to turn your newly-gained knowledge into reality as you share your ideas with other people equally passionate about opera, hear some of the cast perform live and get to know more about the

artist’s journey from studio to theatre.

For many years, State Opera SA has nurtured the early careers of some of South Australia’s talented operatic young artists. With the invaluable financial support of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation and with assistance from The Friends of State Opera and the Rotary Club of Adelaide Inc, that program has been able to expand. In 2015,

under the guidance of David Barnard, State Opera SA’s Head of Music, and with the assistance of language and vocal specialists Dr Christine Rothauser, Dr Margaret King, Gisele Blanchard and Mario Bellanova, the program will include

Young and Emerging Artists in a comprehensive range of activities. These will culminate in public Masterclasses, Summer and Winter Showcase concerts, Opera Studio chamber operas, pop-up operas, education programs and

corporate engagements along with the featuring of some of those artists in State Opera’s Main Stage productions. South Australia has always punched above its weight, producing brilliant arts practitioners.

With the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Opera Program, State Opera SA will become a hothouse for the creation of the next generation of Australian opera stars.

SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT“If children are not introduced to music at an early age,

I believe something fundamental is actually being taken away from them.”

Luciano Pavarotti

State Opera SA is committed to building awareness, appreciation and participation in high-quality opera experiences through a variety of targeted education programs and content. Our school engagement programs are associated

with our main stage productions and tailored to suit specific school groups.

Having the opportunity to experience the wonders of operatic music is a great way for children of all ages to engage and interact with opera professionals and some of the best creative arts industry personnel

South Australia has to offer.

When children experience opera, they grasp so much more – theatre, dance, singing, drama, art, design and fun! Opera tells stories that resonate with any generation; it’s about their development, extending their imagination and

broadening their experiences as they grow.

State Opera SA can develop tailored programs for a variety of large school groups and offer open rehearsal opportunities for smaller school groups where students can see how a main stage opera rehearsal is conducted and

gain an understanding of the many different elements required to bring an opera together.

State Opera SA is also able to undertake a variety of School Workshops with the aim to create opportunities for artistically talented children to be identified and given guidance and assistance,

should they wish to develop their arts training further.

This exciting English vocal ensemble makes its debut Australian national tour with a characteristic mix of old and new, tossing early madrigals in with spectacular new works to create a delicious musical salad!

Pronounced Ee far-joe-LEE-nee (‘the little beans’), the group is acclaimed for its fearless performances of music that demand the utmost from its singers. This is extreme a cappella that ranges from the hyper-real playfulness of Janequin’s sung description of a Renaissance hunting party, to the rich imagery of a Monteverdi madrigal.

Director Robert Hollingworth leads the singers and audience effortlessly through countries and centuries, and pays tribute to his native Great Britain with Adrian Williams’ extraordinary Hymn to Awe and the exquisite sentiments of Inheritance, which was Herbert Howell’s

Director Robert Hollingworth leads the singers and audience effortlessly through countries and centuries, and pays tribute to his native Great Britain with Adrian Williams’ extraordinary Hymn to Awe and the exquisite sentiments of Inheritance, which was Herbert Howell’s

contribution to the Queen’s coronation. The concert also features a new piece by Australian composer Andrew Schultz, especially commissioned for I Fagiolini and Musica Viva by Geoff Stearn.

Lovers of great singing and choral music will welcome making the acquaintance of this superb group!

JOIN THE FRIENDS

For almost 40 years the State Opera of South Australia has given us the best that opera can be. It has enthralled, delighted, challenged and entertained us, and taken us on journeys of musical and vocal magnificence that have

enabled us to explore, through this most complete of art forms, ourselves and our world.

During this ‘lifetime of opera’ The Friends of State Opera has been proud to be intimately connected with the performance values and vision of the company. A pursuit of excellence as well as a creative drive for innovation has

seen the company recognised, nationally and internationally, for its world class and award-winning productions.

The world premiere of the Philip Glass Trilogy through its staging, music, voice, dance and imaginative interpretation won world-class accolades, demonstrating yet again the power and creative potential of opera as well as the

courage and excellence of this outstanding company.

The Friends are therefore delighted to be continuing their support of State Opera SA through their main stage production sponsorship in 2015 of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. In addition The Friends will continue to assist in its role to

further develop the Young Artists through its support of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Opera Program.

The Friends’ activities include the ever popular Opera Voices Introductions which provide members with the opportunity to hear from our opera production directors, conductors and singers, both soloists and chorus,

in the creative and social ambience of The Opera Studio. The Opera Studio provides further opportunities for The Friends to experience live performance as well as participate in the development of young singers through the interactive and rich dynamic of the Young Artists’ Masterclasses and Young Artists’ Winter and Summer Showcases and productions. Social and fundraising activities such as opera lunches, dinners and cocktail parties allow you to

continue to enjoy the magic of opera in the company of other opera lovers.

In looking forward to another exciting season with State Opera of South Australia we welcome and encourage you to take a minute, join The Friends and turn that minute into a lifetime of enjoyment

as you share in the passion and power of this great art form.

Pauline Brooks OAM

President, The Friends of the State Opera of South Australia
