Digital health funding broke all previous records in Q3, with 2017 YTD funding surpassing $9.0B. Assuming momentum continues through Q4, we’ll finish 2017 well past $10B, a significant signal of support for entrepreneurs working to achieve their Health Moonshots. Despite the headlines and uncertainty surrounding healthcare reform, investment into digital health companies continues to accelerate.

Q3 2017 YTD SUMMARY: MOMENTUM TO PASS $10 BILLION

1 Another Record-Breaking YearWith $9B invested YTD, digital health funding is $2.6B ahead of where it was at the end of Q3 2016, and has already surpassed any total annual funding amount on record.

2 Later-Stage Deals IncreaseWe’ve seen an increase in late-stage deals this year, with 75% of sectors receiving funding in a series D round or later, compared to only 50% at the end of 2016, showing a steadily maturing market.

3 Deal Sizes Charge UpwardsAverage deal size increased from $14M in 2016 to over $18M this year, signaling that investors are willing to put more money into companies with clear potential.

As we head into the final quarter of 2017, a new benchmark has been set in digital health, with funding having already surpassed 2016’s year-end total. Q3 2017 is the largest third quarter on record, exceeding last year’s Q3 by approximately $300M and catapulting this year’s totals to over $9B in funding.

Having received $585M+ in investments in Q3 alone, the digital med-device sector has rocketed up the list to $1B in total funding year to date. It is also among the most active sectors by deal count. While big data/analytics still tops the charts for total raised, the sector only recorded 13 deals, for a total of $138M in Q3 2017.

Though 2017 has seen a slight decline in seed deals, there has been a surge in series C & D deals, which accounts for the increase in deal size and total funding this year. Notably, Q3 2017 had the largest count of mid stage (32) and late stage (5) deals than any other Q3 on record.

Average round size continues to grow, a trend driven by the increase in both the amount and size of later-stage deals. Series D funding rounds are steadily getting bigger, a sign that more companies are maturing. On average, series D rounds were $113M in Q3 2017.

The biggest investors of 2017 have invested across a broad spectrum of digital health sectors. Of these, Khosla Ventures leads the group, having invested in seven sectors this year. Other investors appear to be taking a more focused approach. Y Combinator, for example, has invested in only three sectors -- all in Q3 of this year.

Sectors: • We have a broad view of digital health and believe that the current trend is a

cross-pollination of technology and data with all aspects of health and healthcare. StartUp Health InsightsTM tracks companies that enable health, wellness and the delivery of care through data / analytics, sensors, mobile, internet-of-things, 3D printing and genomics and personalized medicine.

• StartUp Health tracks companies based on their sectors, subsectors, specialties technology type and end user. Investments in subsectors and specialties are not mutually exclusive, as deals are tagged with multiple subsectors and specialties based on the company’s focus.

• Q2 2015 brought with it an extensive database quality assessment. A new system was implemented allowing StartUp Health to track innovation with enhanced granularity. Additionally, gaps in funding data were researched and added into our database enabling us to identify fundings previously unaccounted for in previous reports.

• Q3 2017 also brought with it an extensive database and global industry review. A new database was implemented allowing StartUp Health to track funding records and investors from around the world more efficiently. Any inaccuracies were corrected with the transition of systems.

Stage of Funding: • StartUp Health InsightsTM records only publicly available data on cash for

equity investments when the cash is actually received by the company. StartUp Health InsightsTM is inclusive of accelerator, pre-seed, seed, venture, corporate venture and private equity funding.

• Early stage: The company has raised a seed or series A round • Mid stage: The company has raised a series B or series C round • Late stage: The company has raised a series D or other growth equity round • StartUp Health also tracks incubator rounds and other financings into privately-

held entities (e.g. “unnamed” venture rounds, strategic investments, growth equity and private equity).

• In tabulating deal activity by stage we excluded rounds not clearly associated with a specific stage.
