How to Register to be a Parishioner of St. Theresa Often, in the sacramental life of the Church, Catholic faithful will need to prove residency in a parish. Registra-tion with the parish office allows us to track your sacra-mental data and keep you connected with the life of the

church. In order to register, come to the parish office Monday – Friday 9:30am – 4:30pm to fill out a registration card. Yellow registration cards can also be obtained at all of the Church entrances – these can be mailed to the par-ish or given to an usher during a church liturgy.

July 9, 2017 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, The praesidia of the Legion of Mary here at Saint Theresa are hosting a Brown Scapular enrollment ceremony after Mass next Saturday morning. July 16th is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The scapular is a sacramental that serves to remind us of Our Lady's loving protection and our own call to holiness through prayer and acts of charity. Many of us were enrolled in the scapular as children. Once enrolled, there is no need to be reenrolled or to have a new scapular blessed -- it automatically be-comes blessed when the wearer puts it on. The Legion invites anyone who has not yet been enrolled in the scapular to participate in this rite on Satur-day morning, following the 8:30am Mass. Reserved parking spaces were recently added for our scheduled adorers. Please be respectful of these reserved spaces and do not park in these spaces unless you are scheduled to adore at the particular time that you are there. We are always in need of additional scheduled adorers -- visit the parish website to see how you might be able to assist us. We are also in need of substitutes -- particularly during these summer months. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped with our receptions bidding Father Thomas farewell and Father Willard welcome! I know that both Fathers were touched by the kindness and generosity of those who gave their time to help out. From Our Tradition The premier poet of the English lan-guage, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the "Wife of Bath," by this telling re-mark: "Husbands at church door she had five." Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, nota-bly without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding cus-

tom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride's home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprin-kling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren't too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride's family a dowry, and then announce the mone-

tary amounts to the interested pass-ersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride's father to the priest's authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren't quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. --Rev. The Brown Scapular In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.

To be eligible for the scapular promise, one must be enrolled in the Brown Scapular Confraternity. The members of the Con-

fraternity have the added benefit of sharing in all the spiritual benefits of the Carmelite Order. Enrollment is a simple ceremony which will be hosted by St. Theresa’s on Saturday, July 15th after the 8:30am Mass.
