3rd Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019

Pastor’s Corner Prayers for a Happy and Holy Advent!

In the musical “Man of La Mancha,” when Dulcinea asks Don Quixote what it means to “follow his quest,” he responds by singing “The Impossible Dream.” Mary, who awaited the birth of Jesus some 2,000 years ago just as we do this Advent, could have written the song. She certainly lived it. Imagine how young Mary—probably no more than 15 or 16 years old—must have felt upon receiving the news that the impossible was about to take place within her, that she would give birth to the Savior. How could she tell her betrothed, Joseph? What would her family think? Who would believe her? “Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel says to her. “Nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:30, 37). We know the rest of the story. The impossible was indeed made possible, not only at the birth of Jesus, but in the many miracles he performed, and most of all at his Resurrection. If God could accomplish all this, imagine what God can do in your own life. Advent is the season for imagining what is possible, for dreaming new dreams, for hoping beyond hope. But it is also the season when hope can be hardest to find, dreams hardest to believe. The days draw short, the nights are long and the air turns. Expenses may loom at a time when resources are scarce. Separation, grief, loneliness, and depression are no strangers to the season. Hope may be in short supply during this time. We need Mary’s inspiring example of courage and trust in the face of uncertainty more than ever. Mary can’t guarantee us a smooth ride, however. Look at her own difficult journey: first, she had to travel to Bethlehem late in her pregnancy (Luke 2:1–6). Have you ever tried riding a donkey? Now imagine doing so nine month’s pregnant! Later, she had to flee to Egypt with Joseph and the baby when their lives were in danger (Matthew 2:13–23). Nor can Mary promise us a season free of anxiety and worry. Imagine how she must have worried about what was ahead for her beloved child as his messianic destiny was revealed to her, first by shepherds who left her pondering the news in her heart (Luke 2:16–19), then at the Temple by the prophet Simeon, who spoke to her of the sorrowful times ahead: “A sword will pierce your soul too” (Luke 2:22–35). What Mary can offer us is a remarkable and inspiring example of courage in the face of adversity, patience in the face of uncertainty, and hope beyond hope that the impossible is indeed possible. Mary stood with her son as he was crucified (John 19:25–27); she stood with his fearful followers who huddled after his death (Acts 1:13–14). She knew that the story wasn’t over yet. And she was right. Our story isn’t finished, either, no matter what challenges or wounds burden us this season. All things remain possible with God. This is the miracle of Advent. We can once again dream the impossible dream—and reach the unreachable star. The Church Office is going through some minor renovations to make us some more room. It will consist of adding a couple of walls. The labor will be provided by several parishioners of various skills and talents. So, in the meantime, please excuse the mess!

The schedule, for the Advent Communal Penance Services, is posted in this bulletin. As we know, one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves, for Christmas, is a good confession. Don’t miss out!

Peace, Joy and Love, Fr. Brian J. Roby

3rd Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019

Greetings from Joe Bland, Pastoral Associate I hope you are having a happy and prayerful Advent! I wanted to take some time to introduce or reintroduce myself to the parish. As you have heard I have returned to work at the parish after being gone for six years working for the Diocese as Director of Family Life then Evangelization. Some of you may not have known I was gone because you are new to the parish in the last few years. I am truly amazed at how many new families we have added over the last few years! My wife and I are regular 9:00 am Mass goers and at times it feels like we have five different parishes under one roof. When I go to a different Mass there is so many people that I don’t know now. Some of you do know that my wife Cathy and I are long-time parishioners here at St. Mary of the Woods. We have been married for 32 years and have three adult children; Chelsea, Seth and Hannah all graduates of St. Mary of the Woods School and Trinity High School. Some might ask; “What brings you back to work at the parish again?” Well, the answer is I am a people person and I love direct ministry to people. I have been in ministry for well over 17 years and being able to work directly with God’s people is what gives me life. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy my time with the Diocese, but my love is doing parish ministry. While at the diocese the Lord provided me many opportunities to learn new skill sets and meet some very interesting and holy people from around the country and the world. I still carry some of those friendships with me to this day. These people have taught me many things and God has gifted me with new and exciting tools for ministry. So, I say that God took me out of parish ministry to be equipped to come back and minister to you, to help Fr. Brian and our staff take this parish from being a really good parish to be an exceedingly GREAT PARISH! You might also ask what is a Pastoral Associate verses a Director of Faith Formation. That’s is a good question. I will still have some of the responsibilities that Carrie had but the scope of what I will be doing will be broader. I will be helping to implement our Parish Plan for Evangelization starting in 2020. There will be more news coming regarding this in the near future. Also, I am trained in teaching Theology of the Body and I am also trained in Prayer Ministry. I hope to teach some courses in both to our adults of the parish in the future. Most of all I am here to serve you and your families. As a trained Prayer Minister, I am available to meet with any parishioner one-on-one for prayer whether it be prayer for a situation in life, prayer for healing (physical, emotional or spiritual). I am not a counselor or a spiritual director, but I can be a spiritual companion to accompany you in what you need spiritually. I treat all my prayer sessions confidentially with great anonymity. Again, it is great to be back with you and I look forward to catching up with those that I do know and getting to know those of you that are new to the parish, at least new to me. Blessings Joe Bland Pastoral Associate

St. Mary of the Woods School donated $1,031.43. WOW! So proud of the generosity of our students and families. Because of you, Christmas will be better for our angels. The Raiders came out on fire against Apollo High School on Saturday. This was a big win and we congratulate Coach West and all the players on their hard work and dedication. Sunday Connection

The third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word meaning “rejoice.” This Sunday is so named because “Rejoice” is the first word in the entrance antiphon for today's Mass taken from Philippians 4:4,5: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near.” Some people mark this Sunday on their Advent wreath with a pink candle instead of a purple candle. This Sunday is a joyful reminder that our salvation is near. This week's Gospel Reading continues our Advent reflection on the person and message of John the Baptist. Last week we heard John speak about his relationship to the coming Messiah, Jesus. This week, we hear Jesus' message to John the Baptist, now in prison, about the signs of the kingdom found in Jesus' ministry and Jesus' assessment of John's role in the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of Matthew tells the story of John's arrest in chapter 14:3-12. In today's Gospel, John sends word to Jesus from prison, asking if Jesus is the Messiah for whom he has been waiting. Jesus responds by pointing to the miracles that he has worked and invites John and the other hearers to make their own determination. In his next breath, however, Jesus praises John for his role in preparing the way for Jesus. Then Jesus says that all of those who work for the Kingdom of God will be as great as John and even greater. Jesus' message to John about the signs of the kingdom being performed recalls the salvation described by the prophet Isaiah. This passage is a reminder that the beginning of salvation is already mysteriously present to us, but also yet to be fulfilled. Salvation is already in our midst as manifest in the miraculous deeds of Jesus and in the Church. But salvation is also to be fulfilled in the coming reign of God. Even as we observe our world today, we can find glimpses of God's work among us. Even more, we help to prepare the way for God's kingdom by our words and our deeds. This message is indeed a cause for rejoicing.

BULLETIN BITES “What did you go out into the desert to see?” After his arrest John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” John knew his time to lead them was coming to an end. Jesus simply tells them to report what they saw and heard. Jesus then proclaims the greatness of John, but assures those who acknowledge their sin and repent, who understand and have the faith to imitate what He said and did, will enter the Kingdom of God and be greater than John during his sojourn on earth. It is up to each of us who do our best to learn about Jesus, to be like Jesus, to love like Jesus, and to risk all like Jesus by loving God and our neighbor as ourselves. That is certainly something to desire. It is something to prepare for. It is something to strive for. We can do that by reading the nativity stories in Matthew and Luke before we hear them proclaimed during the Christmas Masses. Reflect on the meaning of God made Man, born in a cave, who is the Prince of Peace. Reflect on how we can be more like Jesus.
