COME, SEE & EXPERIENCE ST. LUCIA - FOR ONLY YOU CAN RATE THE ACCOMMODATION OF THE CREOLE ISLAND – Islelander Travel St. Lucia What the Press Has To Say

"It's hard to imagine anywhere lusher than the southwest coast of St. Lucia. In this wild green land, there are mysterious jungles, steamy volcanoes, secret waterfalls, thick palm forests, and most dramatic of all, two spectacular half mile peaks – the Pitons – that shoot straight up from the sea. - Jennifer Quale, Connoisseur Magazine

The author, Patrick Leigh Fermor, compared the "lonely spikes" to the Matterhorn, while others have called them the eighth wonder of the world. Yet few travelers know they exist. And although there are many reasons to stay at ANSE CHASTANET, the most compelling is that it gives you the opportunity to be part of this beauty."

SOUFRIERE The Heart of St. Lucia’s Renowned Natural Attractions: The Pitons & Drive In Volcano Along with many other exotic sites. Soufriere's backdrop of the Gros and Petit Pitons a UNESCO World Heritage site, sea and rainforest provides a picture perfect setting for a visit to this laid-back and relatively undeveloped town in the south of St. Lucia. Considering that its name is French for "sulphur," it should be no surprise to discover the wealth of hot springs and mineral baths. Other great spots to visit include Diamond Botanical Gardens, a slew of pretty beaches and the bike trails that wind through sugar plantation Anse Mamin. Rent a car to see the town or book a taxi with Islelander Travel. Visit www.islelander.com for more information, or email [email protected] for bookings and inquiries.

There is never a bad time to make Soufriere a travel destination. The weather is beautiful year round. Soufriere is a beach destination which offers much to tourists in terms of beach sports, nature tours, historical sites, trekking, exotic nature sites, natural ruins and “real” adventure. Guests do not have to go far to enjoy such water activities as water skiing, sailing, and fishing. Travelers who wish to enjoy the outdoors doing things other than those water options can go horseback riding, bike riding, hiking, site seeing or just relax with nature in the Soufriere area. Squash is also a local favorite which visitors can either try their hand at or enjoy as spectators. Guests who like to combine their exercise with relaxation in spa style activity might want to check out The Spas of Soufriere at Jalousie, Anse Chastanet, Ladera, Stonefield, featuring the ultimate best spas on island.

In terms of water activities, there isn’t much that the Soufriere area does not offer to guests. Fishing, particularly deep sea fishing is a favorite for many tourists who want to soak up the rich Caribbean sun. Others like to get out and get active and many try water skiing or windsurfing during their stays. Families traveling together might enjoy snorkeling, which even the kids can do safely and easily. Visitors who are truly active might challenge themselves with the Soufriere bike trails. Bike St. Lucia is a favored option for many travelers, or hike the Gros Piton, and call it a day. Writer of the book 1000 places to see before

you die Patricia Schultz says "It's a vista that silences with its power and mystique.’

Jade Mountain

DESCRIPTION

Rising majestically above the 600 acre beach front resort of Anse Chastanet, Jade Mountain is a cornucopia of organic architecture celebrating St Lucia’s stunning scenic beauty.

Architect owner Nick Troubetzkoy has expanded upon his philosophy of building in harmony with Caribbean nature in his creation of Jade Mountain. The bold architectural design –individual bridges leading to exceptional infinity pool sanctuaries and rugged stoned-faced columns reaching towards the sky – makes Jade Mountain one of the Caribbean’s most mesmerizing resort experiences.

Expect grand sweeping spaces where bedroom, living area and an extravagant private infinity pool glide into one another to form extraordinary platforms floating out into nature. With the fourth wall entirely absent, Jade Mountain’s sanctuaries are stage-like settings from which to embrace the full glory of St Lucia’s Pitons World Heritage Site, and of course, the eternal Caribbean Sea.

Wrapped around an infinity pool with a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors, the Jade Mountain Club caters exclusively to resident guests, celebrating James Beard Award winner, Chef Allen Susser’s “Jade Cuisine.” Hovering in space above the Jade Mountain Club is the Celestial Terrace, perfect for sunset cocktails or star-gazing.

A wide range of spa services can be enjoyed in the privacy of the Jade Mountain sanctuaries or at Kai en Ciel, Jade Mountain’s boutique spa and fitness studio.

The Jade Mountain sanctuaries are deliberately techno-free; there are no telephones, radio or television. Internet access is available at reception for those who simply cannot let go of the outside world as the resort encourages you to! The resort major domos and a dedicated resort team ensure outstanding service around the clock.

Enjoy the exclusivity and privacy of Jade Mountain with all of Anse Chastanet’s restaurants, bars, boutiques, art gallery, spa, scuba, bike and watersports facilities as well as 2 soft sand beaches available to Jade Mountain guests at all time

FEATURES & AMENITIES

All sanctuaries feature 15ft high ceilings and have the 4th wall open to the views. All other aspects, layout and size vary from sanctuary to sanctuary. In addition to locally made fine tropical wood furniture an eclectic collection of furniture has been placed in the sanctuaries giving each one of them their own individualistic ambiance. The living areas of the rooms are finished with more than 20 different species of tropical hardwood flooring and trims harvested in an environmentally correct way. JADE MOUNTAIN's technicians actually visited the Rain Forest of Guyana and personally chose which trees to be used. A multitude of hardwoods has been used including Purpleheart, Greenheart, Locust, Kabukali, Snakewood, Bloodwood, Etikburabali, Futukbali, Taurino, Mora and Cabbage Wood. The interior walls are finished in a crushed blush toned coral plaster quarried in Barbados. The exterior is in massive rough concrete and imbued with locally quarried stone, with all the window openings framed with massive 3 x 18 inch tropical wood mullions and muntins which are in-filled with movable jalousie louvres. The flooring exposed to the weather is finished in quarried coral tile from neighboring islands

"SKY" Suites In addition to the 24 infinity pool sanctuaries at JADE MOUNTAIN, there are 5 SKY jacuzzi suites. The SKY suites are located in the lower hillside level of JADE MOUNTAIN. While the SKY suites do NOT have an infinity pool they are part of JADE MOUNTAIN and guests will enjoy all of the JADE MOUNTAIN privileges. The SKY suites are very spacious suites of about 1650 square feet, with the 4th wall open, yet completely private, to maximize the amazing view experience of the Pitons and the ocean. SKY suites feature a two level room lay out, with large and comfortable living space and open bath design, with a raised Jacuzzi tub towering above living space and also open to view.

All infinity pool sanctuaries and the sky suites have king size beds. In room facilities include fridge, tea/coffee maker, and hair dryer, iron and ironing board (a member of housekeeping will gladly perform the chore for you). All infinity pool sanctuaries and the sky suites have an electronic call button to contact the service team at any time. There are no televisions, radio or telephone in the infinity pool sanctuaries and sky suites in keeping with the overall resort experience. Guests are asked to refrain from using their cell phones in public, and keep them on vibrate setting whilst on property. Internet access is available at the JADE MOUNTAIN reception- guest may bring their own laptops or use the dedicated guest computers. Telephone services, fax, business services are all available at the reception. Excursions, car rental, jewellery, surprises, romantic private dinners.... all can be arranged by the JADE MOUNTAIN concierge. Please challenge us.

Sep 1, 2009 | Trip type: Couples

I just got back from spending six nights at Jade Mountain in St. Lucia with my husband celebrating our 25th anniversary. I cannot say enough about the staff, food, amenities and the view from our "sanctuary"--unbelievable! Youcan get out and take advantage to what is offered or stay in "sanctuary". We did venture out of the resort, only during the day. Most people were pleasant; however you do need to be aware of peddlers on the streets. All in all we would go back in a heart beat!

JADE MOUNTAIN 's ensuite infinity pools are not accoutrements, but primary elements of the building's design. With sizes ranging from 400 to 900 square feet, the design of each pool is unique both in colour and shape. The infinity pools are meant to serve as organic components in each suite, as well as in the building as a whole; their sizes increase in relation to the different square footage of the three different room categories; SUN, MOON and STAR.

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort

DESCRIPTION

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort, one of the loveliest locales on the island of St Lucia, bears the distinction of having captured the imagination of the island’s earliest known inhabitants, the Arawaks. These Amerindian people, as early as 350 A.D. were so impressed by the verdant tropical landscape and its auspicious positioning near the imposing Petit Piton that they recorded their impressions on a stone tablet which can still be seen at Stonefield Estate today.

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort’s appeal has only increased over time. In fact this coveted patch of earth has continued to inspire many, from those who work the land, to those who seek the muse or those who rest a while to absorb its moving serenity.

Stonefield’s more recent history includes its incarnation as a prosperous agricultural estate producing the much desired cocoa and lime oil that were driving forces of colonial plantation economies. In 1972 the Brown family acquired the land and Canadian engineer Wayne Brown and his St Lucian wife Anista began to envision a retreat that would eventually become a pied-à-terre for visitors from the world over.

Elegantly rustic villas ensconced in a lush tropical hillside afford visitors a chance to relax, luxuriate and rejuvenate. Stonefield Estate Villa Resort continues a 1600-year old reputation as one of the most desirable destinations for the discerning Caribbean traveler.

FEATURES & AMENITIES

Set amid the lush foliage of a former lime and cocoa plantation and nestled at the base of the awe-inspiring Pitons, Stonefield Estate Villa Resort is the island’s premiere luxury boutique resort. The estate, embraced by the boundaries of the UNESCO World Heritage Site sprawls over 26 acres, and commands views of Petit Piton, one of two volcanic cones that rise dramatically from the Caribbean Sea and define the St Lucian landscape.

The villas at Stonefield Estate Villa Resort are beautiful, airy and bright, accented with allusions to French colonial style including wide open verandas, attractive jalousie shutters and antique four posters beds. Each villa is self-contained and commands vistas of the awe-inspiring Petit Piton. Our secluded plunge pools and private garden showers bring the lush tropical world and the secure retreat of the villas into harmony.

St. Lucia’s newest spa sensation features a cozy atmosphere that sets the pace for true relaxation. Bamboo Door carries mainly botanically based products designed specially by the environmentally friendly Green Papaya® Lifestyle Products.

St Lucia has long been recognized as an idyllic wedding and honeymoon destination, but Stonefield Estate Villa Resort is something of a secret. The tranquil, rustic setting, stirring vistas and first rate amenities make Stonefield Estate Villa Resort the obvious choice for the discerning intendeds, honeymooners and anniversary celebrants.

ROOM AMENITIES

All villas are equipped with

Secure locking safe Ironing board Iron Telephone Radio CD player Hammocks

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort is keen on facilitating complete relaxation and as such there are no televisions. Villas have access to wireless internet connection.

DINING

Mango Tree Restaurant, like the resort itself is tropically elegant. The al fresco dining pavilion looks out over a small river stone pool and takes in the magnificent Petit Piton and views of the Caribbean Sea.

The chef and his culinary team use all fresh local market ingredients and build on Mrs. Brown’s home cooking recipes to make the freshest, most delicious St Lucian flare. All herbs and vegetables grown on property are organic and the former plantation still yields the seasonal citrus, mango and breadfruit which are incorporated into the daily menus.

The Mango Tree Restaurant features a special vegan menu, as well as a children’s menu. And to stir it up true Caribbean style, The Mango Tree presents a rotating dinner theme menu featuring the popular Barbecue Thursdays, a charming Creole evening with a live local shak shak band and the best baby back ribs and jerk bake on the west coast. The Saturday Market Affair serves up the best of what has been freshly procured at the nearby Soufriere market with live entertainment from local musicians.

Whether you dine under a full moon with Petit Piton cast in shadow, under the starriest of nights, or witness passing ships alight, The Mango Tree Restaurants brings diners the perfect marriage of location and gourmet Creole.

The Mango Tree is open for breakfast from 7.30 am until 11am and is open for lunch and dinner until 10 pm.

Plantation House, the large signature villa on property features a full kitchen and the option for an in house chef for your stay.

RECREATION

Excursions There is no shortage of activities for the guests who might want to stir from their plantation chairs or hammocks on the airy verandas of Stonefield Estate’s villas. Jalousie Beach, the most coveted stretch of sand on the island is

Page 10: St Lucia Hotels & Travel Magazine

10

minutes away. Soufriere itself offers much in the way of sightseeing and activities; in fact many visitors to the island based in the north make it a first stop on their itinerary. From rainforest hikes to coral reef dives, waterfall excursions, botanical garden tours and hot sulphur baths, there really is much to see and do. www.islelander.com

Nightlife Soufriere and its inhabitants are known as laid-back people who know how to truly unwind and as such the pace of the nightlife takes on the rhythm of the surrounding countryside. There are an array of bars and restaurants to choose from and Stonefield’s own The Mango Tree draws a following for sundowners at Happy Hour, live music and excellent food. For those wishing to go further afield, ferry services abound to take you up to Marigot Bay, Castries or Rodney Bay the hip and happening entertainment district of the island.

Beaches Stonefield Estate Villa Resorts operates a shuttle service to arguably two of the nicest beaches on the island, Jalousie Beach and Malgretoute Bay. Snorkelling prospects are excellent, photographic moments in abundance. With looming Piton views and crystalline Caribbean Sea waters gently lapping quiet, palm-fringed shores, guests wanting to get their feet wet need look no further.

Shopping The local craft trade is thriving in the town of Soufriere and there are several small boutiques and roadside vendors from whom the perfect souvenir can be purchased, whether it is local jewellery, batik fabric, carvings and paintings by local artists or postcards. For duty free shopping, Marigot Bay, Pointe Seraphine and Place Carenage in Castries have excellent selections. Water and land taxi services to these northern hubs are easy enough to organise through the resort.

Sports Tennis, golf, diving, fishing, biking, horse-riding and more are all available in the vicinity of Stonefield Estate Villa Resort and arrangements can be made through our concierge service. www.islelander.com

May 22, 2009 | Trip type: Family

Stayed here in April with my husband and two young children. We were in Lime Mill villa and thought it was beautiful. It was not artificially air conditioned, but was wonderfully open air and thus cool and natural feeling. Open air showers were bliss. Rooms were very spacious and tastefully decorated and the exterior terraces and pool area could not have been more appealing. The views were magnificent. All this without the usual commercialism and without hordes of other people. We could hardly believe our luck. The restaurant was very good indeed and all staff were helpful and friendly.

“Simply Beautiful. Best Place for Intimacy and Romance” Ladera Resort

My husband and I married and honeymooned at the Ladera Resort in June 2009. The entire staff was amazing. Their motto "Above and Beyond" is an understatement. The plan was to have a small ceremony for two, no frills. The Ladera accommodated us with a wedding package that fit our budget but exceeded our expectations. The restaurant Dasheene's was awesome! The food was excellent everyday. I awoke every morning thinking ... this must be heaven! My husband and I will return annually!!

.St. Lucia Pitons, Dare to Climb. Dream it, Plan it, Do it…

Gear Up for your next ADVENTURE right here… Islelander Travel St. Lucia

Traveler’s Description: The two Pitons are of course the most photographed landmark on the island.

The Gross Piton is easier climbed with well established tours that provide transportation to the "Interpretive centre"( a small welcome center of sorts with descriptions and models of the local geography, geology and plant life).

The park service mandates that guides be used when climbing this peak. The guides are park service employees that are professional, informative and fun to hike with. The climb averages 2 hours to the summit and rewards those that make it with spectacular views of the island and the Petit Piton. This is a hike, not a climb and although strenuous does not require any special skills or present much exposure or danger.

The Petit is quite different in that there is no welcome center or even a marked trailhead for that matter. Although no guide is mandatory on this peak, you would be well served finding a local that knows the route. The climb does have some primitive fixed ropes and does present some exposure. The summit is a much smaller area, but has even better views.

Gros Piton Climbers

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY, 1 OUT OF 5: 3 DESCRIPTION: Towering 2,640 feet above sea level, Gros Piton is the tallest of the two pitons and second highest peak in St. Lucia. Located just south of Soufriere in the community of Fond Gens Libre, or “Valley of the Free People,” the mountain is sanctioned by the Government of St. Lucia and requires a guide and fee. The trail and community lay decently far from the main road, so private transport is your best bet. There are no public buses that take you any closer than the gap along the main road with a sign pointing in the direction of the mountain. The ascent to the top of Gros takes approximately 2 hours. The trail is very well traveled and maintained. Your guide will help you when needed, but there are no portions of the trail that require much, if any, assistance. Be prepared for a constant and very steady hike to the top. There are several benches along the path that provide great views and a place for rest and relaxation. Be sure to stop at both lookout points at the top, as guides normally stop at the main lookout but skip the secondary lookout, allowing you a wonderful view of Petit Piton. Cell phone coverage throughout the hike. ALWAYS hike with at least one partner, preferably two.

“awe inspiring views”

Pitons

UK, Aug 27, 2009

It was totally the most amazing experience ever. The climb is by no means easy, but it was worth every sweating second and would do it again as the views are spectacular. It was a really hard climb up and I was a bit naive to think it would be a walk in the park (so to speak) for someone as short as me it was hard t get up some parts as the rock can be steep while others are nice and low. You have to keep your eyes down at all parts of the climb up and down as you may do yourself an injury if u don’t. Make sure u have a rucksack as well as u will b given 2litres of water to carry which u will need but if u can carry more I would do so. As soon as u get up to the top there are no other words to describe the view except WOW, and you get to see views from both North and South side, with the south being more picturesque. Coming down was a lot harder than we imagined and we ached for days after so if you’re not in anyway fit this is not for u!

Petit Piton Climbers

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY, 1 to 5: 5 DESCRIPTION: At 2,461 feet above sea level, Petit Piton is the shortest but most difficult of the two pitons, taking anywhere from 1 hour 45 minutes to 3 hours each way. The unmarked trailhead is about a 30 minute walk from Soufriere’s pier. Follow the road from Soufriere that leads south along the water towards the piton. The beginning of the trail is to the right of the road apx. 100 yards before the entrance to the Natural Springs (look for a small pasture and shanty to the right of the road. There is a trail that leads along a chain fence at the back of the field. At the beginning of this trail is an area of the fence that is pinned to the ground with a large rock. This is the beginning of your journey). Be cautious along the trail as there are several times where you can find yourself off the trail if you’re not careful. Or you can cut off all this trouble and book your climb with Islelander St. Lucia, they will arrange a guide for the climb and will pick you up and drop you off. The trail is very, very steep. Hand holds in the rocks and tree roots will often assist in pulling yourself up. Be advised that there are some very tricky rope sections about 3/4th of the way to the top. Use extreme caution and know your limits. Having a spotter is very important on this difficult stretch. www.islelander.com/[email protected] There are no water sources along the trail so take plenty. The trail is well covered keeping you out of direct sunlight until reaching the top.

Excellent morning (4hrs roundtrip) hike - quite a challenge in parts and I consider myself to be quite fit. We paid a guide (Aaron / Erin? which was well worth it, he kept us on sometimes hard to find the trail and guided the weaker ones up the series of ropes up the rocks towards the final ascent to the top. Good foot wear is essential, take lots of water and snacks. I would not recommend poles - you need your hands for traversing the rocks and branches! The bugs only bothered us if we stopped for too long. The views at the top were amazing, it was raining when we arrived but didn't last long, thank goodness because the track was getting slippery. The fruit stall at the end yielded fantastic mangoes - partly as we were so exhausted! A swim at the beach at the foot of the pitons set us right. Great day, would highly recommend. www.islelander.com/info2islelander

“The PERFECT St Lucian destination”

The luxuriant tropical vegetation, the distant roll of the ocean waves, the intriguing sounds of the forest - I was beguiled by them all at this exceptional hotel in its remarkable location on a hillside a few miles outside laid-back Soufrière. So much so that I've now made 4 visits and I can't wait to make that 5.”

“Location, Location, Location” Anse Chastanet

Lancaster, PA

Jun 1, 2009 | Trip type: Couples

Let's face it this is in the most beautiful part of the island! What a view of the Pitons. If you're into photography, than this is the place to be! We had no problem sleeping with no AC. We stayed in room 8C PETREA with a great forest and ocean view. Now about the steps. 101 from reception to the beach. 220 from reception to our room 8C. I'm 61 and only got the shuttle once after we did the Zip Line tour. The steps should only be a problem if you have special needs e.g. heart or lung problems. The staff is fantastic! 3 to 1 staff to guest ratio. We didn't do the all inclusive or meal plan. We spent less than $1,000 on food and drink for our 6 night stay. We've been all over the Caribbean and Saint Lucia is still our favorite. We stayed at Sandals La Toc 1998. Anse Chastanet is a very special place. The only problem we had was leaving because we had to attend a wedding at Sandals Antigua. Toured Jade Mountain our last morning - Spectacular!

“One amazing vacation spot” Anse Chastanet New Orleans, La Apr 28, 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

Anse Chastanet has to be one of the most amazing places I have ever been. The resort is beautiful. The staff were extremely friendly and incredibly accommodating. I brought a wedding group of 20 people to this small resort, hoping for a romantic and fun getaway. I got just that. Every wish was granted on our 8 day, 7 night vacation. Yes, this is an open air resort. But it was never an issue for us. We did get hot when dancing to the local entertainment that was provided every night in the Piton Bar. But nothing a frozen Pina Colada wouldn't help. Yes, there are several steps at the resort (from the beach to the main level over 100). But again not an issue for us. We loved the workout that it provided every day. If you are looking for a quiet romantic getaway, I would highly recommend looking into Anse Chastanet.

“The most beautiful place in the world”

Crystals

My wife and I went here for our honeymoon. I can honestly say it was beautiful. You have your own personal pool, which in sugar cane and mango overlooks the piton mountains. A very spacious apartment at very competitive prices. Martin and Monica were wonderful hosts. They regularly sat and had a drink with us in the bar giving us special rum punch and my wife who does not drink specially made mango juice! When we were billed they did not make any charge for this. Indeed they also did some washing at no cost. They were your personal tour guides for the week telling you where to eat cheaply, nicest restaurants etc! Also Soufriere area is the place to visit. The second week we stayed in a hotel near Castries and it did not compare. Oh and make sure you hire a jeep! it was brilliant for anyone, but particularly if you’re a couple on honeymoon or wanting a romantic week away, this is the place for you!

New York

Great value as each villa is actually a small house with a private pool and views of the pitons! Each villa is very different from the next so go to their website so you can request your favorite one. They all are great so you can't go wrong. Monica and Martin are wonderful hosts and do what they can to make your stay enjoyable. We had many cocktails at the tree house and they never charged us anything! They arranged for private massages in our villa, jeep rentals, breakfast cooked in our kitchen, dinner suggestions, airport pickups, tours through the rain forest.... My husband stayed here for 5 nights exploring the island and then stayed at Ladera for 2 nights - also a great choice in St. Lucia. Enjoy your trip!

“Perfect hide away”

Crystals

We rented the Cottage Mango and Papaya for our family of 6. We received a warm welcome from the staff at Crystals. The apartments are very large and give lots of room. But above all the location is beautiful, a great view and the interior of the rooms is unique and very special. Breakfast is brought to the room every morning and in the evening Chris prepares an excellent 4 course meal from local materials. We had a very special time at Crystals. Our children also enjoyed this special place. We hope to come again

Find the World’s Only Drive-in Volcano at Sulphur Springs

Traveler's Description:

From a mile away you can smell the wonderful scent of rotten eggs and onions, or the hydrogen sulfide emitted from the open volcano. La Soufriere remains active today, which in the event of a major eruption St. Lucia would be decimated instantly. The last minor eruption was in the late 1700s. The volcano itself is some 8 miles in diameter, including all of Soufriere. Guides take you to viewing platforms that overlook parts of the crater, including seven acres of bubbling sulphur-water pools. Visitors were allowed to walk around the crater ten years ago, but after a guide fell through a fissure no one has been allowed across. He survived but opted to work as a fisherman. Many still live near the craters.

Traveler's Description:

The privately-owned Diamond Falls and Mineral Baths, less than a mile east of Soufriere, are part of the Soufriere Estate dating from 1713. The Baths, originally built in 1784, were restored by Mrs. Joan Devaux in the 1980s, with some of the original 18th century baths still in use. At the entrance, a narrow path edged with tropical flowers and shaded by stately palms leads to the bathhouse and a series of pools, each a different temperature. Many Wonders To At Diamond Botanical

Garden, Mineral Waterfall, Nature Trail, & Old Mill

Level of Difficulty, 1 to 5: 1

Description

As soon as you enter the front gates of Diamond Botanical Gardens you are met with the feeling of being in a very special place. You have just stepped into a world where waterfalls gush from the mouth of a volcano, hot mineral springs fill the baths with age old medicinal waters and flora and fauna abounds. The natural beauty of this historical site gives one a true nature heritage experience not to be duplicated anywhere within the Caribbean.

These gardens, lovingly planted by Mrs. Joan Devaux some 19 years ago are a tribute to her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Andre' DuBoulay. The DuBoulay family owned and resided on Soufriere and Diamond estates. During that time the estates produced agriculturally as they had throughout history. Growing crops of sugar cane originally and later limes for lime oil, cocoa for chocolate, coconuts for copra, raising pigs for hams, and chickens for eggs the estate was a bustling hive of activity. The waterwheel of the estates old factory was used not only to crush the sugar cane and limes, but generating the very first electricity to the village of Soufriere. Today this can all still be seen as you tour the gardens, nature trail and estate.

Going further back in time to 1713 you will find that Soufriere Estate being a portion of the original 2000 acres granted to three Devaux brothers for their services to Crown and Country by King Louis XIV of France was strategically located for the development of the village of Soufriere. A base for the French Troops in 1784 led to the discovery of the volcanic mineral springs that was later contained and used in the baths built for the troops by King Louis XVI. These same warm, soothing waters can still be enjoyed today in the restored baths deep within the gardens.

Come and step back into history, surround yourself with the tropical flora and fauna of the gardens and nature trail, submerge yourself into the warm medicinal waters of the mineral baths and sample the delicious "Caribbean" fare within the Old Mill & Waterwheel. Join the Diamond team during your visit to St. Lucia for an all-inclusive guided tour. www.islelander.com/[email protected]

Aug 21, 2009 | Trip type: Family

We have just returned from a 12 night family holiday at the Jalousie. We are a family of 4, with boys aged 11 and 13. If you like jaw-droppingly quiet, beautiful settings, fantastic service and feel the need to relax, and then The Jalousie Plantation fits the bill. It is exceedingly quiet. There is no organized entertainment. Go 'all inclusive'. This is a must.

Location Location Location!! We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to one of the bungalows nearest the sea (the Princess Margaret one!) This class of bungalows were absolutely faultless - one of those rooms that you continually have to pinch yourself. We were aware that some of the other rooms were in need of some TLC but the hotel was in the process of being

upgraded when we were there - the new rooms at the top looked very plush. We didn't go all inclusive and regretted

it as prices were very high.

All in all the only tips are go all-inclusive and try to get a good room reserved by email prior as quality may vary.

the epitome of barefoot luxury and island chic.

RESORT

SUGAR BEACH IS UNDERTAKING A US$100 MILLION TRANSFORMATION OF ST. LUCIA’S ACCLAIMED JALOUSIE PLANTATION,

PARTNERING WITH KOR HOTEL GROUP’S INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED RESORT BRAND THE TIDES TO MANAGE WHAT WILL

BECOME THE TIDES SUGAR BEACH.

An elite brand with resorts in the world’s most desirable locations, The Tides will bring a uniquely innovative edge to the management of this deluxe

development. Property owners and hotel guests will experience outstanding levels of comfort and service throughout The Tides Sugar Beach, where

casual-yet-chic is the order of the day.

Diners in this vibrant Caribbean resort will be able to choose from several superb restaurants, ranging from a table at the dine-in wine cellar or an

informal, al fresco beachside experience with views of Gros Piton to fine dining, colonial-style, at the Great House, while the resort’s laid-back bars

are perfect for pre- or post-dinner drinks.

Just a splash from Sugar Beach itself, the protected waters of St. Lucia’s Marine National Reserve offer some of the Caribbean’s most rewarding

snorkeling and diving, and the resort has its own PADI certified scuba centre. Children will love the supervised Kid’s Club and games room; and for

adults, the full-service Rainforest Spa offers exquisite, island-inspired treatments in secluded cabanas among the jungle.

With 152 lavishly-appointed rooms offering five-star luxury and Caribbean influences, The Tides Sugar Beach will be a resort in a class of its own, on
