Turn Away from Work
Come now, turn aside for a while from your
daily employment. Escape for a moment from the
tumult of your thoughts. Put aside your weighty
cares. Let your burdensome distractions wait. Free
yourself a while for God, and rest in Him.
~St. Anselm of Canterbury

Spread Mercy!
On September 5 we celebrate the memorial of Saint
Mother Teresa. The charity St. Mother Teresa shared
with the suffering in the slums of Calcutta is still an
inspiration to us today. She encouraged each of us to
“Stay where you are. Find you own Calcutta.”
In the Diocese of Madison, the Saint Mother Teresa
Mercy Endowment Fund provides financial support to
ministries performing the Corporal and Spiritual
Works of Mercy. This year’s distribution has assisted
those suffering from homelessness and addiction,
helped support mothers, and provide catechisms for
prison ministry. Please pray for an increase of mercy
in our diocese and consider making a gift to the
endowment to support these ministries. To learn more,
or make a gift online, visit diocesemadisonfounda-
tion.org. Checks can be sent to: Catholic Diocese of
Madison Foundation, 702 South High Point Road,

Readings for Next Weekend
Isaiah 35:4-7a
James 2:1-5
Mark 7:31-37
Next Sunday’s Gospel
You are encouraged to cut and post this Gospel
praying it daily and using it as quiet reflection.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by
way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of
the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man
who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay
his hand on him. He took him off by himself away
from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to
heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”—
that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s
ears were opened, his speech impediment was
removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to
tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the
more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly
astonished and they said, “He has done all things
well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
St. John Vianney 1245 Clark St. Janesville, WI
Thank you to those who have donated to our
urgent campaign to raise $127,000 for security
enhancements for our Church and School campus.
As I mentioned during my announcement for this
project, we will be acknowledging the donors and
the gifts each week in the bulletin. Of course, you
can choose to remain anonymous, but please note
that with your check. As you pray about how to
support this project, keep in mind this scripture
passage from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians:
“Each of you should give what you have decided in
your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compul-
sion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is
able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at
all times, having all that you need, you will abound
in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:7-9) Thank
you for your generosity.

Adult Catholic Spirit Club
The Adult Catholic Spirit Club will meet at noon,
Wednesday, September 12 in Marian Hall. A potluck
dinner will be served and you are asked to bring a
dish to share along with your own table service. We
will open our fall season with “All About Eagles”,
presented by Kurt Van Galder. The eagle is not only a
regal bird but is the national symbol of the United
States of America. This program will be informative
and interesting! Originally Fr. Paul was to speak at
our September gathering but a conflict arose and he
regretfully had to cancel ... we’ll try to schedule him
for a future program. We are again offering blood
pressure screenings from 11:30 am to Noon. For more
information, call Ginny at 608-752-4442.
September 2, 2018 — 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The St. John Vianney
Women’s Scripture Group
will resume on Wednes-
day, September 12 at
9 a.m. in Marian Hall.
We meet from 9 to 10 a.m.
We welcome all women
to come and read and
reflect upon the upcoming
weekend scriptures and discuss their meaning as they
relate to our own loves and how we can respond to
Jesus, the Christ. All are welcome. We provide the
readings and encourage whatever level of participation
makes you comfortable. If anyone has questions,
please call me at 608-290-3665. I’d be happy to talk
with you.
