Academic Counselling Update — June 2014

Exam results will be available for all June provincial exams on July 30, 2014. Transcripts are mailed out the same day from the Ministry of Education to Grade 12 students. Students can see their provincial exam results via the inter-net at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/student.htm. This long link will take you directly to the login page. You will need your PEN number or previous login information.

Students in Grade 12 should have now completed their Post-secondary Institution Choices form online at the above website. This will allow their final transcripts to be forwarded to the post-secondary institutions of their choice. Grade 12 students who have applied to a post-secondary institution must log on to the above website and complete the PSI selections section if they have not already done so.

If any data is incorrect on the final transcript from the Ministry of Education, students should contact me, Mr. Fraser, by email (during the summer – [email protected]). Do not call the Ministry of Education. They cannot make changes to your transcript without us being involved. Good luck to our grads!

Reminder to Future Photography Students for 2014-15

If you are going to be taking Photography next year, then Summer is a good time to secure the camera you will be us-ing for the course. The following guidelines should help you out.

Your camera must be a fully manual, 35mm film camera. If you do not have one already in your possession try the fol-lowing:

1. Ask extended family members or friends if they have a camera for you to borrow. This can help you from the cost of purchasing one. Often, people have put their film cameras in the back of their closets while working digitally and wouldn't mind for someone else to get use from it.

2. Some former students have gotten lucky at thrift stores. For $10 - $50, they walk out with a perfectly good camera.

3. Still others have used Craig's List and the internet to lo-cate a camera. Buyer beware.

4. Kerrisdale Cameras on West 41st in Vancouver, carries a selection of refurbished 35mm cameras. They are more than you would spend on a camera from Craig's List or in a thrift shop, but you will know that it will work properly.

I hope this helps.

Mrs. Jacqueline Lindenbach

Passport to Education—Last Chance, Due by June 6

The government of British Columbia has designed a program to reward students in grades 11 – 12 by giving them credit towards the cost of tuition at many post secondary educa-tional facilities. The credit is recorded each year in a “Passport Booklet” according to the following schedule.

Grade 11 ~ $250, and Grade 12 ~ $500.

St. John Brebeuf maintains the Passport Booklet in the stu-

dent’s school file. It is given to students when they leave

school.

Information and applications for the Passport to Education

Program was included with the interim report card envelopes

of Grade 11 –12 students, which were issued on April 8.

Extra forms are also available at the office.

worked. You will find the page under the PARENT section

of the website entitled PARENT PARTICIPATION PRO-

GRAM (the last item on the left-hand side).

http://www.stjohnbrebeuf.ca/parents/parent-participation-

program/

Each time you record your hours, you will receive 2 emails.

The first will be a confirmation email of the hours just submit-

ted. The second email will give your family’s total hours re-

corded for the school year.

If you have forgotten what you have done or do not have a

hardcopy of what you have already done, please email

Dana Lindl at [email protected] to get

that information.

UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES:

Ground Maintenance Work Bees: Saturday, May 31st,

and Saturday, June 14th , from 10:00am to 1:30pm

Time: 10:00am-1:30pm. Help is needed with: Cutting the

parking lot clean up, and general cleanup. If you have the

following equipment, please bring it: gloves, ear protection,

eye protection, blower, edger, garden forks, garden rakes,

small garden tools, and hand pruners (sharp), wheelbarrow.

In advance, thank you for taking time out of your busy

schedules.

LAST CHANCES FOR HOURS FOR THIS YEAR!

The parent participation program not only serves to

strengthen the school community, it also provides support

to a wide range of school initiatives that help to offset the

cost of tuition. The school relies on the valuable contribu-

tion of each family. Our coordinator is Mrs. Dana Lindl.

As part of your commitment to the school, each family is

required to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours, and the

onus is on you to keep track. There are many opportu-

nities to volunteer at the school. As part of the registra-

tion package, you filled out a form indicating your first,

second, and third choice of volunteer opportunities.

Please be aware that you may not be able to fulfill all your

hours in the areas that you have chosen. Upcoming vol-

unteer opportunities are included each month in the par-

ent participation section of the school newsletter. You

may also contact the school or email as follows:

[email protected] if you would like to

speak to Mrs. Lindl, our coordinator, about ways to volun-

teer. Mrs. Lindl is a volunteer from the Education Commit-

tee who supports the program by helping to find and or-

ganize volunteers when needed.

The 12 hours need to be completed by June 15. You

are responsible for reporting your hours and will re-

ceive confirmation once your hours have been re-

corded.

Our Parent Participation Program has gone on-line! You

will now use the school’s website to log your hours

Parent Participation Alert—Report your Hours!

Monthly Staff Meetings — Later Start with other commitments, and there will be supervision for

those who arrive at the usual time. There are no late start

days in June.

Please check the school calendar or fridge magnet. Rather

than the usual 8:30am start, the first bell will go at 9:00am.

The bus schedule will remain the same for those families

Another year is almost over and it has been a good one. Thinking over the retreats, the Masses, and the various other events

Campus Ministry has been a part of, it is humbling to realize what the students do here for love of God and others.

The past month has been a busy one. The grade 12 retreat, a highlight of the students’ grade 12 year, was held at Stillwood

Camp. The amazing weather, combined with student participation made this retreat truly one to remember. On May 7th, SJB

hosted our annual Mother’s Day Tea. Many mothers and grandmothers attended and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment,

the food, and the fellowship. Thanks to all of these women who support the school in so many ways. The March for Life in

Victoria, held on May 8th, was attended by almost 100 students. Our students held the banner that began the walk, proudly

showing their support for all life. Our May Mass, celebrated by our chaplain, Father Emmanuel, occurred on May 22. The last

event for May was the living rosary, where over 60 students recited the parts of the rosary while the rest of the student body

and staff responded.

Next week we are looking forward to our first school Mass in the new St. James Parish church. The procession of our grade

11 and 12 students will begin at 11 a.m. with the Mass beginning at 11:30. All are invited to this, our year end Mass. The com-

mencement Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10th at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish in Langley.

We would like to thank you for your support over the past year. It has been a privilege to work with your children and to wit-

ness the work of God in both their lives and ours. May God bless each of you.

Cindy Kuester, Sarah Gillespie, and Alan Ferguson
