Something changes the first time you pass through the red doors at St. Edward’s. In that moment, you leave high school behind and transform into someone ready to accomplish great things.

In four years on the hilltop, you meet people whose experiences add to your understanding of the world. Inspired by your professors, you push yourself to surpass your limits. You find your own way to personal fulfillment.

Maybe you start a nonprofit, write a play, fight infectious diseases, develop the next big technological breakthrough or work with the underserved. Maybe your path takes you across oceans; maybe you find your calling close to home.

ONE THING’S FOR SURE: YOU CAN DO MORE, BE MORE, THAN YOU IMAGINE — AND THE WORLD WILL BE BETTER FOR IT.

At St. Edward’s, you dig deep for answers to questions about ethics, philosophy or science. Your professors insist on it, and you crave the challenge. You examine issues from all angles, especially ones you disagree with. And you write and present until communicating ideas is as natural to you as blinking.

Your classmates are from different backgrounds and continents, but you all share an infatuation with learning. From each other, from classes, from expert speakers visiting campus.

Here, curiosity is rewarded, and open minds fit right in.

It’s the norm at St. Edward’s. Our academically challenging liberal arts education prepares you to be a well-rounded thinker, to solve problems and communicate effectively, and to see the world from different points of view. And to speak up for what matters to you — and take action.

Our students talk about lightbulb moments they’ve experienced on the hilltop — the kind that clarify their values and dreams. What will yours be? It might happen when you…

EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE like Chris Jackson ’16 did. He teamed up with a professor on a research project his freshman year. That experience helped him land a research internship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center National Laboratory and another one with NASA. His end goal? To pioneer new sources of renewable energy and sustainable materials.

What really excites you — interpreting the human genome, debating the intersection of faith and culture, designing a killer costume for the stage? At St. Edward’s, you find out.

You jump at opportunities to conduct graduate-level research and explore new subjects — even make a contribution to your field as a student. Whether the hands-on work you do involves Petri dishes, paintbrushes or programming, you have your chance.

DIVE INTO YOUR DISCIPLINE.

Shannon Ung ’15, whose family survived the Cambodian genocide in the 1970s, traveled to Cambodia to retrace her parents’ steps so she could better understand their struggle to escape the Khmer Rouge regime.

Jack Ikard ’16 has always had an inventor’s mind and an environmentalist’s heart. He developed a household aquaponics system — now poised for international distribution thanks to professional connections he made at green business events, national press coverage and a successful Kickstarter campaign.

HOW DO YOU MAKE BILL AND MELINDA PROUD?Create a winning education-focused app — in just 50 hours — during the Gates Foundation’s inBloom Codeathon competition. Three students at St. Edward’s did just that, beating more than a dozen seasoned professionals. Their reward: $3,000 and job offers on the spot.

CAN YOU ENACT REAL CHANGE IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL? Absolutely. Easy? No. Life-changing? Yes. That’s what drives students to spend their summers in Washington, D.C., where The Washington Center matches them with internship sites and academic courses based on their individual majors. Recently, students from St. Edward’s worked with the Torture Abolition Civic Engagement Project, the Protection Project and the Peace Corps.

WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM A DECOMPOSING PIG? Ask students of Casie Parish-Fisher, instructor of Forensic Science. She buried four dead hogs in a wilderness area as part of a mock crime scene and challenged her students to complete the investigation in 48 hours. Evidence logged. Case solved.

HOW MANY STUDENTS DOES A 227-ACRE CLASSROOM HOLD? As many as it takes to find the answers. Students from all majors conduct research and fieldwork at the St. Edward’s Wild Basin Creative Research Center — our nearby nature preserve. Currently underway: Biology, Computer Science and Education students are developing a living database of the preserve’s ecosystem for ongoing environmental studies.

Here, one mantra prevails: Question everything. Students at St. Edward’s thrive on pushing the boundaries of learning. High-level research and creative projects fuel the excitement of discovery.

You already love London, and you’ve only been here a couple of days. For the next two weeks, you and your classmates are traveling the country learning about the history of science. Yesterday, you sat in an antique surgery chair while a tour guide at the Old Operating Theatre demonstrated a set of primitive (and frightening) medical tools. Today, you and your friends grab a map and get ready to brave wet weather and the Tube to pick up fish and chips for dinner.

Each time you check in with your family, you have new stories to share. Life abroad is intense, a mixture of excitement and homesickness and mind-boggling discovery. You wouldn’t have it any other way.

You hear different languages spoken across campus — by the Portuguese club and members of the International Student Association. Topics in your Contemporary World Issues class take on a whole new meaning when the people sitting next to you are from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

With such a global atmosphere on campus, it’s no wonder so many students at St. Edward’s go after international experiences like Fulbright scholarships or internships and jobs abroad.

You could be next.

You’re pretty sure Austin is the coolest city ever.

Maybe you realize it on the diving board at Barton Springs Pool, steeling yourself for the cold water while your friends egg you on. Or during First Thursday on South Congress, when night falls and the music starts and artists come out in droves to sell their work.

Snacking at your favorite food trailers, kayaking on Lady Bird Lake, shopping at an indie bookstore or catching a rock (or punk or hip hop or bluegrass) show downtown — you never run out of things to do in the capital of Texas.

It’s hard to find a place more alive than Austin.

At your professor’s suggestion, you invite a local marketing director for coffee. You pick up the tab, and in return she lets you pick her brain for an hour about her career. Later, when you start your job search, you reach out to her again — and she introduces you to a colleague who’s hiring. It’s just one of the perks of living someplace as connected as Austin.

Thanks to Austin’s über-educated workforce and passion for innovation, companies from all over the world have located offices here. Living in Austin, you can tap into the working world and land an internship, a volunteer position or even a job if you love the city too much to leave.

As an intern at South by Southwest® Interactive Festival’s Gaming Expo, you do far more than fetch coffee.

You spend months in late-night meetings, coordinating vendors and planning activities. The event itself is three days of no sleep, aching feet — and your brain in overdrive. You’ve never felt so organized, working seamlessly with your team. You troubleshoot everything that comes your way. When you talk to professionals, they take you seriously. Some even tell you to look them up after you graduate.

You walk away with confidence (and, if you’re like SXSW intern and recent graduate Jacob Mooney, a full-time job offer before graduation). You don’t have to wonder if the gaming industry is right for you. Now you’re sure.

You have classmates who celebrate daily Mass. You also share classes (and perspectives) with Jewish friends who belong to Hillel Toppers and Muslim friends who visit the campus mosque to pray.

Whatever your persuasion, your faith grounds you. St. Edward’s respects and embraces your spiritual identity. The university community is guided by its Catholic, Holy Cross heritage and welcomes those from any faith, background and culture.

Your experiences challenge your perspective, and in the process you grow. You emerge more confident in yourself, your values and your purpose.

You meet friends at St. Edward’s who share your dedication to social justice and making a difference. Together, you tackle big problems. You team up with local nonprofits; you spend spring break tutoring kids at inner-city schools; you scrub clinic floors and read to children in orphanages in Uganda and India.

On Friday night, you head downtown — this time, not to the music of Red River Street but to a park where local homeless people gather. You and a group of friends make this pilgrimage of service monthly, bringing food, clean socks and companionship to those in need. From listening to their stories, you begin to understand this complicated social issue — and change how you see the world.

PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE AT HOME OR ABROAD:• Campuswide service events

• Alternative Spring Break (10 locations around the U.S.)

• International Immersion (India, Uganda, Canada and Peru)

• Habitat for Humanity Global Village program (New Zealand and the Dominican Republic)

OUR STUDENTS REGULARLY GIVE MORE THAN 70,000 HOURS OF THEIR TIME THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE EACH YEAR.

BELIEVE IN YOUR POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD.

Before you moved in together, you and your roommate worked out the perfect way to set up your room. Now that you live on the hilltop, almost everything you need is a short walk away, and you run into friends (and make new ones) all across campus.

Once a week, your friends take over the residence hall kitchen to cook a giant spaghetti dinner. Your hall gets together for monthly board games in the common area. You meet in the Huddle, a burrito and taco bar on campus, for trivia and jam sessions. And you regularly hang out at open-mic night at Meadows Coffeehouse or watch university-sponsored movies (with free popcorn) under the stars.

Campus is more than where you stay or study — it’s home.

MAKE THIS PLACE YOUR OWN.

You spend the morning in the community garden, planting tomatoes with other members of Students for Sustainability. On your way to the fitness center for a workout, you stop outside the Carriage House to listen to the student jazz band practice. Then it’s off to a LOCO — Loosely Organized Computing Organization — meeting to discuss the upcoming university-wide hackathon.

And all this before you paint your face blue and gold and head to the soccer field. You’re one of the HillRaisers, ready to make some noise during the Battle of the Saints showdown between the Hilltoppers and our longtime rivals.

Life on the hilltop is anything but boring.

Every time you walk by Main Building, you can’t help thinking of it as a castle overlooking the Austin skyline. You love campus — but not just for its beauty (and it is gorgeous). It’s more than that.

So many moments stand out during your time here: meeting your best friend at Hillfest, discussing politics with your favorite professor over lunch in the dining hall, turning a study session on the lawn into a spontaneous game of Frisbee.

All over the hilltop, there’s an energy that’s uniquely St. Edward’s. People here care — about their passions, the world and each other. So do you.

In your four years on the hilltop, you gain a diploma and an impressive résumé — and more. You build confidence, independence and friendships that will sustain you for the rest of your life. You travel great distances (physically and mentally) and open up to new people, ideas and experiences. You find the place where your heart and mind agree: This is my purpose.

Maybe you turn your internship into a full-time job in Austin. Or you get into the grad school of your dreams. Or the next chapter of your life takes you abroad through the Fulbright Program or the Peace Corps or work with an international corporation.

When you walk through the red doors of Main Building during graduation weekend, you take St. Edward’s with you — in how you’ve been transformed and how you will transform the world.

WHATEVER THE FUTURE HOLDS, WHEREVER LIFE TAKES YOU, YOU’RE SURE OF ONE THING …
